Just a couple a days ago I got my gouache set (never used) out of the cupboard and did an underpainting for a pastel painting while thinking 'I never see videos using them for under paintings.' and low and behold you do one! Having never used gouache I over did it, so it is good to see a video of them being used for this purpose: thank you! I really liked the vase after the first glaze of pastel: it reminded me of old crackled china. Lovely painting as always.

Beautiful painting! And the clear gesso idea is a great tip, thanks! I have been looking for ways to use my watercolor paper with pastel. Can you do as many layers on the watercolor paper with clear gesso on it as you can with the sanded paper? And can you use the clear gesso over a layer of pastel if you want to keep layering (or would that smudge the pastel too much)? Thanks for your tips.
@anetalogan6699
@anetalogan6699 4 жыл бұрын
Its beautiful. I know the layering is important with pastels. But this is probably too advanced for me. After maybe a tenth colour on the vase I am lost. How do you choose little of this and little of that colour there. Its very confusing for me. I try to watch other videos too but I always end up by being frustrated with the layers. Cant I choose the percect colour and put it there? Does the very first coulour make senae since there are 15 layers over it?
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. Actually the "value" (lightness vs. darkness) is more important than color for the initial layers. With soft pastel we typically work dark to light. Therefore if I was painting a field of grass for example, I would paint the darker (roots for example) and gradually add lighter layers of grasses that the sun might be shining on. It's a bit hard to describe in words, but I have some beginner videos in a playlist you can look for on my channel that might help to break it down. ;)

Beautiful painting. I've beendoing that same experiment only with watercolors I wasn't happy with, coated with the clear gesso, went over them with pastel. Came out pretty good. Also, where do you get your great music from? I want to start making videos. You just use your phone?
@monetcafe

Wonderful, so glad you had some success with the clear Gesso. Also, I get my music from the KZbin audio library. It’s a great place to get music that doesn’t have a copyright. And yes, I use my phone which is an iPhone 11 for making my videos. I also use iMovie to edit them.

So basically, one can use pastels on top of watercolour, gouache or acrylics. Is that correct? 🤔
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Keep in mind that your need to use a water-friendly surface though with these mediums. Pastel papers like Sennelier LaCarte are not water friendly... but most are. I like to work on watercolor paper... apply my underpainting... then a thin coat of CLEAR Liquid Gesso (which adds grit) and then pastel.

Oh no! i’m so sorry to hear that. Yes, some mediums will blend a bit when you add clear gesso. However, I usually like my underpaintings a bit loose anyway before I add Pastel. So sorry that happened sweetheart, and maybe you could make it work in your favor in the future.

Why do you have to do underpainting with gouache? Why not pastels?
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 4 жыл бұрын
That's a great questions......You can use pastels for an underpainting and that is my typical method. However, using different mediums as an underpainting often creates different results. Also, some mediums (such as watercolor, gouache, and acrylic inks) don't take up any tooth of the pastel paper, and thus you can get more layering with the pastels. Hope that helps :)

I wouldn't spend money on Arteza, I prefer paints who are really lightfast and real artist quality. It's ok if you you only paint for fun or learn, but if you want to sell your art I would be carefull. Their lightfastratings are a bit unclear - to be nice. It's not be found what method the use for that.
