The Beast Tamer is a piece for flute and fixed media that portrays the relationship between humans and the natural or unnatural beasts, real and imagined, that we attempt to domesticate. The piece centers around a dialogue between an unseen beast and a beast tamer, who plays the flute much in the same way that a snake charmer does. The piece gives listeners insights into the nonverbal communication that can exist between two different creatures with different forms of perception and understanding of the world around them, and how ultimately communication in that fashion can only reach certain levels of understanding. This piece was written for the 2022 CNU Composer’s Forum concert and premiered by flautist and composer William Kessler.
