Can money and power ever make us happy? How much is enough? Our constant desire for more is part of our human nature.
Some call it a useful dowry of evolution, others a fault in the human genetic make-up: The old mortal sin Greed seems to be more ubiquitous than ever. Why can't people ever get enough, where is this self-indulgence leading - and are there any ways out of this vicious circle of gratification?
"People like to have a lot of stuff because it makes them the feeling of living forever," says American social psychologist Sheldon Solomon, who believes today's materialism and consumerism will have disastrous consequences.
Anyone who fails to satisfy his or her desires in this age of the Ego is deemed a loser. But with more than 7 billion people on the Earth, the ramifications of this excessive consumption of resources are already clear. Isn’t the deplorable state of our planet proof enough that "The Greed Program," which has made us crave possessions, status and power, is coming to an end? Or is the frenzied search for more and more still an indispensable part of our nature? We set off to look for the essence of greed. And we tell the stories of people who - whether as perpetrators or victims or even just as willing consumers - have become accomplices in a sea change in values.

I grew uo basically homless, then taken by the social services and placed into fostercare in a middle class family. Later I was placed in this upper class couples farm and it really opened my eyes. They were so greedy, could buy anything they wanted but were still not happy. Money is never gonna make you happy. Maybe more stable with food and housing, but beyond that its just ridiculous. I'm in my late 20´s now, no family, no money but I've fulfilled my dreams and I have amazing people surrounding me.

Think the concept of "family," is going to change in the future. There will no longer be the nuclear or extended family, but small villages, where children will be raised together, there will still be marriages between adults, but children will choose their parents, siblings and cousins.

Now we tend to leave nuclear families for affinity groups of friends and associates. Things are continually shifting due to changing impact factors. There was a time before money when the socializing good will of our community counted for similar survival values. It was sounder and less arbitrary in many ways.

That just bummed me out. My health is shot, the roof just jumped up by $500.00 a month on my mortgage payment. Food we got.Children are grown and don't care if I live or die. You go to the market with your work and they give you money in exchange. Money hides the contractual difference, and that difference consists of gains for some and losses for others. Profits are accumulated and wealth is created, wealth is accumulated and capital is created. On the other hand, those who lose transfer their losses to other businesses and thus in a cascade, the losses accumulate in poverty and the poverty accumulates in the miseries of the most miserable places on the planet that are on the other side of the wall. You don't need to be greedy - it's just the natural business process.

The Shaman's amazing, traditional Inuit drum singing is formidable! I felt a strong wave of electricity & energy flowing right throughout my body, from head to foot. I remember during the financial crisis in 2008 as I slowly lost all I was consumed with paralyzing fear. We slept in our SUV truly happy just to have gas to run the heater and a belly full of food no longer afraid w no Bill's to pay...it was very eye opening! No stuff=no stress.

I spent 10 years homeless in downtown Toronto. I came to the conclusion that if you couldn't carry everything you own on your back then you have too many things. The corollary is that if you you put a roof over your head, it stands to reason that that roof will be supported by four walls and if you have a roof and four walls you then have space and you will immediately start filling that space with stuff that you don't need. After 10 years of homelessness my health began to fail so I had to put a roof over my head and I immediately started filling the space that was created with stuff. Now I have a two bedroom apartment where I live with just my dog for a companion yet that space soon got so full of stuff that I had to buy a 21 foot trailer in which to put the stuff I don't have room for in my two bedroom apartment. Now that trailer is also full of stuff and almost everything in the trailer and in my two bedroom apartment is stuff that I don't need and have never used so now I am busy giving away that useless stuff to people who think they need it. It's December 2019 and I put the roof over my head in March 2005. That is only 14 years during which I accumulated so much stuff, most of which I don't need that I'm running out of space to put my stuff in. Because my health problems requires me to have a roof and a certain amount of stuff just to stay alive, I will keep the stuff I need and am slowly getting rid of the rest of my stuff. Yet even now I find myself buying stuff I don't need and have to get rid of more stuff just to make room for the new stuff. A roof is a trap that is like a cancer that just keeps growing. Before I became homeless I was a millionaire and then a woman introduced me to crack cocaine. Withing 2 years I was bankrupt and within 2 more years I was homeless. Strangely I was much happier when I was homeless than when I was a millionaire. Interestingly, the first part of my journey to becoming a millionaire I was very happy because I felt that what I was doing was benefiting my fellow citizens, but later I didn't feel that way.

This is the most eye opening piece of information I have ever witnessed . I am 30 years old and have been thinking about death everyday for the past year or more , almost obsessively. I also have an anxiety disorder which has been shown to increase your thoughts on your own death in some people . @Akshay 14 bear in mind that because you have children, it is not obligatory by any stretch that they take care of you in old age. If you got children for that I hope for your sake you get it, however it is a very selfish reason to have children. Also not everyone who is childless and single are unhappy by any stretch. Actually more unhappy people are married or in relationships that bring the no genuine joy. Happiness and unhappiness exist within both groups. They are many people who have had kids and end up in the same nursing homes as the childless, sometimes with less visitors. It is the life you live that determines how life will be in your twilight years if you live that long. Also you can actually outlive your kids... That is myopic on your part. Learn something else

As someone who teetered on the edge of life and death for roughly 16 months, I think these understandings are valuable. It is true that greed arises from the desire for permanence. It is true that greed unchecked absolutely must lead to ruin. It is true that humans are the only species which fears its own mortality and acts upon thus. However, these shallow understandings are also a form of naïveté. After repeatedly brushing with death and undergoing untold suffering... It becomes clear that greed also arises from the desire to live. Not just the afterlife, but also the here, the now. If you die once you may no longer fear death. But if you die a hundred times you may also no longer fear living. Once you stop fearing what tomorrow holds, you can examine yourself and say, wow, I really don't want that. Or, wow, tomorrow is another chance that I've been gifted. You innately know that few things could possibly be worse than what you've already experienced. Whatever tomorrow holds can be overcome... Unlike death. The true enemy? It's fear. The criminal fears the police, who fear the banks, who fear the government. The spiritualist fears death, so he envisions the afterlife, which causes fear of god. The child fears his parents, so he lies to others, and they both lie to themselves. Corrupt leadership, televangelism, child abuse. We create our own hell. Greed is just a symptom of the disease known as fear. But greed can also encourage progress. Technology, society, and today, even the world around us can change from our choices. It's the power we now wield as a species that has progressed so incredibly far past all others. That power was borne from greed, but, not greed instigated by fear. It was greed inspired by the desire to live better; to see our children live better; to create a better now and future. That kind of greed? It's being oppressed by fear. Soon... Fear - not greed - will destroy us all.

A fantastic documentary that should be shown in schools and universities. I have to say I have been aware of our demise for a long time, as a species. We are just not fit for this planet and seem to learn nothing from our history and past disasters. It was refreshing to see the young people in the film who want to change the raging tide, I was once one of them. Now, I am more like the professor, acutely aware of the impossibility of the human race as a failed experiment. And yes, the calamity that is in our near future no one can be prepared for. Thank god, I am in the last quarter of my life, living simply and wanting little. The film really hit home.

This is the essential idea of the Free Will given by our Almighty Creator that initiated and continues to maintain life here on earth, and part of why God allowed Adam & Eve to eat the fruit of the Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil, even though He had forbidden it. We all freely (to an extent) make conscious decisions to choose between acting on impulse of what is forbidden (temptation of wickedness) and learning the knowledge on what is good (resisting the temptation) and what is evil. Once we know the difference, we are responsible for siding with one or the other and this shows what kind of soul we possess. In the end, the good souls gravitate to a good place and the bad souls to a bad place... Easy.

Fabulous documentary. Thank you, DW. It is always a joy to find pearls like this film. For me, there is something more difficult than facing my mortality, it is adjusting to the fact that the people in powerful positions can not bring themselves to do what must be done to save the planet and even their own children and grandchildren. Such is the power of unrestrained ego and greed in the kind of humans that achieve great success in our societies, perhaps the narrator is correct, we humans are not well adapted to survival on this planet.

Watching this, I was struck by how we need to involve more philosophers and artists into the human condition. The whole documentary was a privilege to watch. It made me question many things, but also reinforced other things that as the kids and the Shaman said, are sitting right in front of us. The documentary was fantastically shot, and using entries form Ernest Becker's book The Denial of Death added a lot of gravitas to the whole thing. Unlike some documentaries, this one ended, much like Pandora and the Jar she was not supposed to open, on a note of hope that maybe, just maybe we can do something about this problem, before it overwhelms us.

We are each our own answer. Those who realise, accept and embody this can become impervious to persuasion from those with an agenda. Frequently, philosophers are ignored, marginalised and demoted in the narrative that is generally accepted. They can't "prove" anything with objective tests in a laboratory, their strength lies in their acceptance of all, which means that they can be interpreted as lacking conviction (actually, this is the false conviction of those who think that they know better than others) but people have become so weak that if someone won't tell them what to do they perceive that person as not worth listening to. Beings must learn to tune into and trust their intuition, from which they have been separated by formal education systems based on often spurious, very selective curricula designed to reinforce nationalistic/discriminative narratives, directly contradicting some of the values espoused by the so-called leaders of the various nations and allegedly shared commonly among the populace. It's a pretentious mess based around fear responses. Will collapse in on itself soon. Bring the noise!
