"Money Has To Be Found From Somewhere" | Labour Set For £10bn Public Sector Pay Rise

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said the Government will “make sure the sums add up” if public sector workers are given above inflation pay rises.
Reports which first appeared in The Times suggest independent pay review bodies have recommended the 5.5% rise for teachers and around 1.3 million NHS staff.
Political commentator Theo Usherwood tells Talk's Dr David Bull that if the whole of the public sector received the proposed pay rise intended for teachers and NHS staff, it could cost around £10 billion across the public sector, which led to comments that people could see tax rises in an autumn fiscal statement to pay for such a move.
With many of the unions involved with pay negotiations funding Labour, Theo questions whether a Labour government is more susceptible to their demands than the previous Conservative one would have been.
With the high likelihood of Keir Starmer's first King's speech facing amendments, this could be the Labour leader's first rebellion not even a month into office.

Pensions should be taxed. I would tax pensions by 2.5% special tax. These tax will be used to fund health and social care and other freebies pensioners have. Also remove the triple lock. We need to be fair here. Any money gained from removing it can be used in health and social care.

Public sector workers are generally paid quite a lot less than private sector workers. The department for education is trying to recruit engineers with similar qualifications and experience to myself to work as teachers. I looked at it and the starting pay would be a £27,000 pay cut. That is why we have a shortage of teachers, the people who could do the job can't afford the low pay

Billions of pounds staring everyone in the face. Benefits being paid to all the immigrants who have arrived (to save the UK!) over the past ten years. Housing, income supplements, child allowances (for both resident and overseas children, real and fictional) free medical and dental treatment, interpreters, legal advisers, mobile phones, education, prison places, court time, police time, welfare officer time, the importation of parents and grandparent (anyone else noted the proliferation of Eastern European, African and Muslim elderly getting social housing an blocking hospital waiting rooms?) And I am sure I have missed a good few items. But Labour want to make it even harder for hardworking parents to give their children a better education, because the state system is crap.

Saying more pay will attract more teachers is highly disingenuous, because there are thousands of teachers out there that schools simply point blank refuse to employ. They are the older more experienced ones, who would be happy to work for the current salaries, but schools don't want them because they are higher up the pay scale than newly qualified teachers or trainees. Before returning to the UK I can remember getting a position at an international school in Italy. There was no haggling over pay. I was put straight on their highest level for newly recruited staff. However on returning to the UK no school wanted me. So for the past 10 years I privately tutored A-level maths, further maths, physics and chemistry. All are subjects I know inside out, and all are shortage subjects.

My portfolio is rounding up to almost a million, and I have realized that when a stock makes it to the news. Socialists always enlarge the state apparatus. The bigger the state, the more people depend upon the state. The bigger the state, the more pension contributions for non productive members of society has to be, further contributing to the burden on taxpayers. State spending rarely contributes positively to a countries GDP, Its becomes a drain only. Just look at the farce of HS2! Ever increasing costs because the contract was awarded on a cost plus basis. So as costs rise the profit of the contractors are protected. Labour are also committed to squandering taxpayer money on Ukraine and supporting the suicide of Net Stupid for our industry. We've lost steel making and fertiliser production in the UK and a direct result of Net Stupid.

No, but taxes are absolutely sky high and everyone else suffers. Give the right people in the NHS the increase and get rid of all the unnecessary senior managers and middle managers. Also stop paying external consultants, create the jobs within. More money isn't needed, far better resourcing and allocation is!

@@taffyterrier yeah sorry I wasn’t clear on that. I meant that a 5% pay rise doesn’t cover the costs of the recent rises in food fuel and rent which are significantly more than what the 5% would cover as most government workers (despite what’s reported) are fairly low paid) The % amount is irrelevant. For years we have had 1-2% pay rises and no one really grumbled as this was covering cost of living increases. It’s not now so people are now unhappy with 1-2% rents where I live have almost doubled in the last few years so people I work with have moved further and further away but then fuel and travel costs have gone up massively. It’s not just a problem with public sector either. The private sector is having the same problems and are struggling to recruit workers on the wages they are offering
@DaystromDataConcepts

yes, teachers and nurses need pay rises, but so do most of us. I don't think an NHS consultant on 125K should demand more, nor do I think many of the other public sector workers who seem to feel entitled because it's the "bottomless pit" of British tax payers who fund their wages. When you don't work in the wasteful public sector and your company doesn't do well or you don't perform, you don't get automatic pay rises above inflation, nor do you expect bonuses. The NHS continually requires gargantuan amounts of money and yet there is so much room for efficiencies to deal with this. Instead, the NHS is like a house with a big hole in the roof and the only answer is to spend more on bigger heating systems rather than fix the hole in the roof! My father worked for a local authority council after working in the private sector all his life and was astonished at the blatant waste and employee apathy. When its the public that pays your wages, the attitude seemed to be that they can get away with doing as little as possible and yet expect annual pay rises. Finally, junior doctors all know exactly what they're getting into when they sign up for medical school. They know how bad the pay is for a few years while they learn their trade. They are withdrawing their labour due to wanting more money. However, isn't that a violation of the Hippocratic oath? To do no harm,? It seems when it comes to making more money, that vocational pledge has gone by the wayside without anyone commenting on it. A junior doctor is an apprenticeship, you work long hours for poor pay. However, your income trajectory rises steeply, far more than most careers when you get past that. Sure, we all deserve a little more, but I dislike the sense of entitlement when it comes to the public purse being the source of your wages.
