Costa Rica is great, but I thoroughly enjoyed Nicaragua! It's like how Costa Rica used to be 20 years ago. Same scenery, but still super low key and authentic, and so much cheaper

Having lived in Costa Rica you should be aware that if using US dollar bills they will not accept ANY that have marks on them or even the slightest tear. Any US dollars we used, were new from banks only. In addition, I noticed you talk about how everyone speaks English. In the Jaco area, you will have younger people that have learned the basics. Otherwise, unless a hotel or store is owned by an American, English throughout the Country, is not widely spoken. If you plan to do anything off the beaten tourist path, which I HIGHLY recommend to experience the true Costa Rica, you better learn some Spanish!

Avoid 50000 colones bill... many places don't accept them because is a really big bill and if it lost they lost a lot of money... Many people only use them when they need to pay a lot of money (like pay their credit card or pay in banks)...

But I was told in some videos that we should use only colon and not dollars. Because using dollars to buy something the rate will be more higher than colon

What I only plan on paying with Colones cause I’m gonna stay one week in a Riu resort . I thought taking 400 dollars would be enough in colones . What do you think
@marytica1236 жыл бұрын
UPDATE MAY 2018: Banks and most business will NOT accept $50 or $100 bills, due to the high exchange rate and their need to give you change. Also, be sure your dollars are "unblemished" and have NO tears. Any bills with writing, tears, or that are overly worn will NOT be accepted !
@LuchoCastle_116 жыл бұрын
Banks do accept $50 and $100 dollar bills though, so if you have no other choice and those are the only bills you have you have to get $20 bills at a bank so you can use them anywhere else.

Mark I have always wondered if you have dual citizenship or are you just an American citizen. Also, from all the places you've visted do you have a set city or country that you plan to retire to?

Is the money relevant to the price of things? I.e. a coke is 2.50 in the states. Is the price of a coke 3000 costa Rica money?
@marytica1236 жыл бұрын
Everything imported is MORE expensive in Costa Rica, due to import taxes. The current exchange rate is about 550 colones to 1 dollar.
@LuchoCastle_116 жыл бұрын
Actually, $2.50 would be c1.250, and no, most stuff in Costa Rica is expensive. So I asume that wherever you buy Coke you are buying a box with 12 cans of coke. In Costa Rica the same box with 12 cans of coke would be around c4500, which is $9. You can buy like a box of 12 fake cokes (they are still cola, but they are made by a different company that is not from the US) at c2500 which is like $5 and that's the best deal you can get.

How is the food? I have been told that it is relatively bland. Sort of about the spice level of traditionally american food as made by midwestern white people. Boring. I like a bit more spice.
@woltersworld9 жыл бұрын
It is not spicy. Lots of beans and rice. Great fruit and seafood options. Simple but tasty food. But lots of beans and rice. Will have a food video out in a couple weeks.

Recommendation: try food in many places and not only turist places... we have a lot of food and really good food and many places have "chileros" on the table if people want to spice the food... Many turist places they only offer "Casados" or really turistic food, try to go to the "Mercado Central" in San José or even go to food courts that have at last one traditional restaurant (almost all food courts have at last one of those), there you can eat more diverse costa rican food than in turistic places (including the sodas located in turistic places)... Also go to Limón, caribean food is delicious, specially the "agua de sapo"... Puntarenas also has their good spots... Also, you haven't taste our food if you didn't eat a "Olla de Carne" or "una Sopa Negra" or "Tamales"... We have a lot of food, not only Gallo Pinto (rice & beans), even though the Casado and Gallo Pinto is really traditional we are tired that turistic places only offer that (because turist really love eat them), we have more traditional food to offer and can change depending where in Costa Rica you are located!!!

Sadly, South America seems like a waste of money to me. It's all the same. I'd much rather stay within Europe as there's simply more to see and do within a much smaller area. This is one of the perks of living in Europe. Cheap flights to neighbouring countries that are totally different to each other. If I had no choice but to visit South America, I'd choose the Amazon before it's all gone.
@BraidyAM7 жыл бұрын
then dont go to south america? CR is in central america btw
@stephanieb27246 жыл бұрын
Costa Rica is in Central America. You can't compare these places with Europe, they are completely different experiences.
