Your parents were good people. My dad involved his friends more than his family in business. When he got too sick, his friends did all his errands including driving his car and running his stores and properties. Well, they grabbed almost everything when he passed away because we had no idea what was what. Guys before buying land conduct a due diligence. Head over to land offices and inspect the land records. A lawyer or property professional could help confirm who the real owner is

I think real estate can be a good investment but requires one to put in the work (repairs, managing tenants, etc). It’s good if it’s tou thing. I prefer lazy kind of investing like in infrastructure bonds. It just depends on one’s risk tolerance and comfort level.

Real estate investment is not foolproof, case in point is year 2020 when many tenants lost their jobs during the pandemic hence were not able to pay house rent, that had a domino effect on landlords/ladies' bottom-line. There are also vacancy and non payments losses. Many renters don't know the return on their investment and have no visibility of their property because of their paper based records rather than the digital systems some of us savvy renters use.
