My electric is going down about 25p a day however the standing charge has gone up 11p so actually I will only save 14p a day. Big flipping deal. My standing charges will be £1 every day from April. That is £365 a year gone before any energy is used. What. The. Flip.

The standing charge is a con. There are around 26 million houses in the uk. If the average standing charge is £330 per house for gas and electricity then these suppliers are getting £8580000000 each year 8.58 bn for new pipes / cable's. That's outrageous.

Of course. When demand for energy all over Europe falls in the summer months then prices also fall. It's standard economics.

Standing charges must be reduced how can it cost energy suppliers £330 per household to use cables and pipes that have been in the ground for a 100 years

Personally I think the brokers of gas and electric should be ashamed ,...British Gas not long ago said they had record profits, why is the ministers we put in power leaning on these companies, times are hard....same every year prices rise in winter lower in spring.....ripping people off is more important

Standing charge is a racket! Never used to charge it. Used to be higher for your first so many KW, then the price would drop. Much fairer.

What's confusing? You pay a standing charge then you pay for each kWh used. It's like paying a monthly fee to a phone company just to be connected to their network plus an additional charge for every text you send.

Standing charges are a disgrace! I understand there is a need to have them but not at these levels. Should be about a third of what they are! Also the whole energy market is broken. I can see different energy companies can charge different amounts but why are individual companies having multiple different tarriff's for the same gas or electricity coming into your home! It is total ****! I think it is time to consider re-nationalisation of utilities....oh and do not get me started about the railways and the striking train drivers!

Octopus tracker has very easily averaged below 20p/kwh over the last year at least (5p for gas)- it’s well worth it. It’s nowhere near a wild as he describes and you can switch away at any time. Fixed Tariffs will likely always be more expensive since the energy companies price in a buffer above a predicted worst case wholesale price to avoid any chance at a loss.

Today I got notification from Octopus that my electricity standing charge will increase from 47.95 p/day to 61.27 p/day. That's an inflation busting 27.7% increase & means I will have to fork out an extra £48.59 per year. In my case, the associated drop in unit prices actually does me no favours whatsoever. I had solar panels installed in 2022 & am a net exporter to the grid. When unit power prices fall, so does the price I get paid for exports. I suspect I'm one of many people who reckon they have 'done the green thing' but now feel like they're getting well & truly stiffed!! The sooner we get a new Labour government & an OFGEM that prioritises the interests of consumers over producers, the better. Standing charges are self-evidently too high & penalise low users. They need to go.

Standing charge is theft as far as I’m concerned! Average it out over the uk and divide it by the kWh consumed! If it’s 3 p more a kWh then those using millions to heat a pool will p[ay the same as those using it to stay alive one extra night during a freeze!

I think part of the problem is that people in this country and absolutely terrible with money. Good that someone like Martin is there to give advice but when I see people going to food banks and then going to buy expensive designer clothes and eating out at expensive restaurants, I know something is fundamentally wrong.
