I heard once you need to operate on a budget. You set an allowance & replace the remaining money into an envelope or rear of my wallet & then you have a fresh amount the next day - you can easily save a few hundred a week without fuss. I was once pad monthly (yes it sucked but I had more money) so I withdrew $2,000 after I was paid, I paid rent & bills I allocated money for fun & savings. Week 3 of the month & I was fine, I never went to the bank again nor used any cards - it was a great way to save, but bloody annoying when you waited weeks to get petty cash back.

The problem is there needs to be a balance on how much you spend from what you make. I used to be a penny pincher and go through great lengths just to save money when the true purpose of money is to be spent eventually. I’m not saying to go on a splurge or spending spree but saving money should never affect your quality of life or morality in the hopes of saving a buck. There is a differentiation between frugal and cheap people. Frugal people are value finders who are trying to maximize their dollars to get the best quality for as little as they can even if it requires spending more money initially, while cheap people avoid spending as much as possible even at the expense of their well-being. My grandparents were millionaires but acted as if they were poor and living through the Great Depression all their lives. They never enjoyed the millions they accumulated and it was never split through their wishes upon their death. My greedy cousins took it all by manipulating their trust documents and wills and are wasting the money as soon as it went to their hands. If you don’t spend your money someone else will since you can’t take it with you to your grave when you die. Inflation can eat up savings and although you can invest your savings to beat or keep up with inflation you are still taking that risks since investment returns are never guaranteed. It took me years to realize to balance this and although I am still cheap on certain things I am slowly learning to enjoy my money!

That is the idea! You saved, so that you can spend later. There are so many people that spend their future in the present. I have always believed as I get older a job may be harder to come by, be prepared just in case you get laid off.
@markm00002 жыл бұрын
Another thing is don’t keep mountains of cash in the bank. Always buy assets that have a return or just naturally increase in value along with inflation. I wish I knew this years ago but I’m still in my 20’s so it’s not the end of the world. I also screwed up my college career but found a fulfilling alternative career so things are looking good. My hardest thing now is trying to acquire assets without having a big income and not using debt.
@jon63092 жыл бұрын
@@markm0000 I actually have this problem of stock piling cash. I actually majored in Finance and work for a bank’s wealth management division. You would think I would be applying my knowledge and expertise to invest my own money and make a good living but the truth is I fall in the category of preserver and can be very risk and loss averse. It took me awhile to work with my behavior and come up with a better plan and strategy and I am currently still learning on my own today which was much better than the finance courses I paid for in college. My rule of thumb is to save 20% of your money in cash and spend or invest the rest! I looked at my overall bank balance and my paycheck to do the math and I am comfortable with 20% of what I have. I now view investments as something that can’t be guaranteed but is worth the risks. I have back up plans in case my investment strategies does not work but I do hope to accumulate more wealth so I can invest in high yield stocks which could be sufficient income for me to the point on not relying on my job for my main source of income if I want to quit for whatever reason.

There's a reason I used "not really" instead of no. You can check out the story of Ronald Read who was a janitor and ended up with a net worth of $8m at the time of his death. Earning more is an advantage but you'd agree with me that a lot of people earned more than him in his lifetime but some died in debt or lived paycheck to paycheck and never saved. The most important thing is your behavior towards money, if you're smart with money you'll save more. If you're not, you can earn more and still burn it. Earning more doesn't always equal saving more, it could also mean spending more.

No the two are linked. If others see you as successful then you will too. It does not work so well the ither way around. If you are seen as unsuccessful by others then your mental health will suffer for it ( in most poeop lke).

In fact... there’s also a saying - a penny saved is a penny earned - to force self to save ... make an auto- saving w/ online banking - forget about that money - budget your money w/ the leftover money from income ... always buy nonessential items w/ saved cash (think about the interest fee for installment purchase - delay gratification ) ... make money work for you so invest only on trade that you understand ... every cent you spend should be computed acoording to your hourly salary rate ... do the same for every items you have to throw in your trash can ... best ways to handle your money 💰💰💰
@Churros16163 жыл бұрын
While this is very true, fact is that the more you make, the more you can keep. That’s why it’s needs to be a combination of making more and investing/saving all the extra money you make in stead of spending it!
@joefuentes29773 жыл бұрын
Yeah I always thought that saying is worded incorrectly. It's very misleading, especially since most people don't make enough money to save any significant amount. So for most people it really is first about learning how to make more money, then saving that...

I was wondering, since financial management is so important is it even taught in school at all? When I was in high school (a long, long time ago) it was an elective. Wholeheartedly agree that tracking is critical; started using aggregation software (Quicken) over 21 years ago - it was life changing.

It is taught (used loosely) in schools for a semester or maybe a year in 8th grade. They teach things such as credit card and checkbooks, which does not do much for anyone especially in the 8th grade.

That depends on a few factors... Can you afford proper accessories for it, like an appropriately secure bike lock, a helmet, and a means of securing your belongings, or maybe a bike seat cover? Many bikes, even nice ones, have awful seats that unfortunately require you to buy a padded cover or a new seat altogether. Is your area bike-friendly (adequate places to ride and park a bike safely)? Do you have an idea how much maintenance would be monthly? Is there a reputable repairman with decent prices nearby, or can you maintain and fix the bike yourself? Do you think having the bike would make an improvement in the quality of your life equivalent to the purchase price? I think if you can afford the additional stuff and the bike seems like a good value, you should go for it. Good luck.
