hi , great information, a land based damaged boat makes huge sense, and the insurance surveys made it a great buy. I expected you to have a lot more damage. no ripped out engine, damage from the fall, like jack stands thru' the hull etc . and a boat that was basically watertight if you left it for 8 months. the marina must have been ably to stand it up quickly otherwise you might have had battery acid damage and all sorts. well done great buy.
@SailingZephyr4 жыл бұрын
I've seen some images from the recovery and our boat was one of the first couple that was righted. So I reckon that made a huge difference. And you are certainly right, there were lots of boats with punctures from jack stands, falling onto the next boats keel etc.

You guys are putting out some great content! Very informative and educational. Even as a somewhat "seasoned" sailor, I still get a lot of value out of what you're producing. I'm curious why you chose a furling mast as opposed to a furling boom? In my 30-odd years of sailing experience, I've used the standard, non-furled sails, only having been on one boat with a furling mast. Granted, it was VERY convenient, and sure beats stacking the main! I recently purchased a new boat that came with a furling boom (Leisure Furl). I also have a boom jack and an adjustable rear stay. So, I can trip and shape the sail as I would on a standard rig. My comment is this; I feel that the furling boom is superior for three main reasons. First, all the mechanicals are easily accessible and simple to service. Second, and this is important, if the furling system has a catastrophic failure (eg the mechanisim is jammed and requires going to port to repair) I can still drop the main. I feel that this is a big safety issue. I don't see how one would drop the sail, in a blow, on a furling mast. Especially if it were reefed when the failure occurred. Finally, the sail shape suffers due to the space available to store it inside the mast. Thus, you'd need to get heavily customized sails that also have vertical battens. But even then, I suspect the sail will be flatter, less efficient and tough to trim. Sorry if I'm coming off as a downer, thats not the intent of my comment. just a point of view and food for thought. I could be 100% wrong. Cheers, keep up the great videos and have fun!
@SailingZephyr4 жыл бұрын
Awesome feedback Chad. I wanted furling boom. I think it’s such a great system. But the cost was quite a bit more and ultimately exceeded our budget. We’ve been so happy with our furling main. All the issues around jams seem to have been improved by zspars. Only once has it gotten stuck and it was our fault. Hahaha. Cheers for watching. Let us know if you’d like to see anything in future episodes.

You have not mentioned insurance. What coverage do you have at what cost?
@SailingZephyr4 жыл бұрын
Great question. We didn’t get insurance until we got to the Med. it was just too expensive in the Caribbean. We now have full comprehensive insurance that covers sailing in European waters and we paid approximately $700 euros.
@robertharmer77494 жыл бұрын
@@SailingZephyr Hi guys, loving the videos, keep up the good work. You mention that the insurance was €700, how long is that for? Did the insurance company require that you have to have a skipper/captain licence before they could insure you ? If so, how much did that cost ?

How much is the cost of a new main sail, how much does the genoa cost?
@SailingZephyr4 жыл бұрын
We already had the Genoa. The new main was approx $2000 USD. But that was with a nice discount. And it certainly wasn't some super amazing main with cool weaves or amazing materials. Just a good ol bog standard furling main with vertical battons from Neil Pryde.

I'd be interested to know if you calculated any of your own labour into the pricing? or did you pay or hire to get everything done, even the cleaning which can be a massive job on a damaged boat?
@SailingZephyr4 жыл бұрын
Great question mate. I was going to attribute a value to our time, (and I secretly have for my own amusement), and there certainly is a lot of savings to be had by doing things yourself. The only labour that was done by someone else was the Mast install and the fiberglassing. We have done everything else on the boat. We also figure that by doing things our selves, we learn about the systems and the boat.

I've read that insurance companies won't touch a hurricane damaged boat without an engineers report. I'm on the fence about these boats, because there are just as many success stories as there are people doing crossings and having their bulkheads separate etc. Also if you declared that it was a repairable write off (as you should) it is unlikely that you will get your money back on resale. This is the biggest success story Ive seen. Most end with really high costs to make the boat structurally sound again. I guess that another way of thinking about it is that all of the sails and rigging are new, if you bought a 2010 boat, you would likely be up for a full replacement anyway. So you are ahead in that regard.
@SailingZephyr4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom - great feedback. You absolutely need a survey for the insurance company before they will even look at you. There is a big difference between our vessel and a lot of other hurricane damaged yachts. Ours had no hull damage. This was a key thing for me. Unfortunately a lot of hurricane damaged boats have had hull breaches. This changes the entire picture long term. Ours was simply a write off for rig, damage to the stern arch, solar and chain plate. Everything else is cosmetic. Again, ours had no hull damage, structure (bulk heads) or water intrusion from rain.

Ultimately it all depends on timing and where the market is for hurricane damaged boats. I have always been keeping an eye and I've noticed it has fluctuated substantially based on supply and demand. Boats I wouldn't pay more than $10k for and were previously listed for say $20k (sunk, massive hull breaches etc) are now listed for $50-$80k.
