This series is super entertaining. Maybe on suggestion: A rig in between dirt cheap and overly expensive, for the working man musician. A rig that is versatile for gigging, rehearsing and practise. I'd love your educational take on this. If you were a guitarist in a band that plays mostly small clubs, and you were to start over, which essential gear would you choose?
@jimmythefish4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that would be great. One guitar? I wonder whether they'd recommend something traditional like a Blues Jr and a Tele or think digital and versatile like an HSS strat with a THR100 or something like a Blackstar Silverline...would be a good episode.
@saint-cetacean4 жыл бұрын
For a standard, Fender inspired blues/rock/flexible rig, I think a Fender American Performer of your choice and a Bassbreaker 30R would be a great start, plus a selection of pedals to your tastes, probably a versatile OD/Distortion (1981 DRV?), mod of some sort, and a delay (maybe?)
@jimmythefish4 жыл бұрын
Den I//Noble Russkie I’d have the American Performer Tele with the split coil humbucker in the neck, the THR100 and drive, reverb, delay, distortion and tuner pedal. Fully reliable, giggable and insanely flexible rig for $3k US or so.
@saint-cetacean4 жыл бұрын
@@jimmythefish Those THRs are amazing amps, can't fault you there!! For a long time I was considering using one for my stereo rig before I decided on a JC40. I did keep my pedal selection to 3 pedals, as per the brief though ;)

Malcolm Brown I’m not sure I would go that far. For example for a long time Fender didn’t make left handed Precision basses. That may even still be the case, I haven’t checked but this is also my point. I have to get to know the bass I have. I did manage to find an older one. I’m not looking for a “better” one. I think it forces you to look at other manufacturers because with for example Fender and Gibson you can’t check out dozens to find a good one. Better to buy from a company with better quality consistency then your left handed is likely to be better. I have a Les Paul and I don’t like it but I can’t try out lots to find a good one so I bought a Heritage. When it comes to vintage you can get into serious GAS which to be honest I think Dan is suffering from. That Tele he has is good. The Strat Mick played is obviously very nice though.
@ryanstark23504 жыл бұрын
There is another advantage to being left handed. Nobody I know can play my guitars. Another factor is that I think right handers find it harder to work out what you are playing but if you are left handed you are used to watching right handers. This would be a kind of mean advantage though.

Mick, I'm really smitten with the finish on the '61 Strat and decided to do a bit of digging and found that the defined stages of sunburst wasn't uncommon during the 60's. Indeed there is a '64 Strat in the Guitar mag "Stratocaster Bible" that clearly shows the three black/red/amber colours (although really worn) almost identical to yours. Whoever did the refinish on the '61 did a really good job. I think it's gorgeous and sounds celestial.

Hey guys have you ever tried the “secret overdrive” trick with any pedals? On Knobs’ Instagram he was saying when co-writing the Pedal Crush book that he discovered that analog pedals overdrive when overloaded so with enough clean boost going into an analog pedal (no matter what kind) and with a master volume on the pedal to compensate, you would get an unintended overdrive from the pedal that would bring out amazing sounds! I would love to see a video exploring this! So if it’s true then any analog pedal is also an overdrive pedal! 😂

Loved this episode! The biggest difference I'm hearing between the vintage guitars and your old faithfuls is clarity. The vintage guitars just have great clarity and note separation across the entire range. Both red and blue get a little muddy, blue falters a bit more. This is especially true when gain comes in. The vintage guitars still sound crisp to where all the sounds are still there. Who knows why that is the case, but that's what I'm hearing.

It might be interesting to swap guitars - Mick's Strat into Dan's rig and vice versa...see what completely different voices might emerge.
