one small note, shouldn't say that employer match is a 100% *rate of* return, it's more simply a 100% *return*. if you want to refer to it as a RATE of return, i suppose it's infinite, or more precisely indeterminate since it's 100% return over zero time. a 100% RATE of return would imply that if you're putting in $1k each year, in your FIRST year it returns $1k to total $2k, but then second year you put in $1k and it would return $3k to total $6k after 2 years.

That guy talking about the 401k is lying. The employer match alone will give your portfolio a roughly 12% cagr over the first 10 years, and this is assuming the market returns 0% over the decade (which happens very rarely). The cagr from employer match alone starts to fall off considerably after the first 10 years, but the return you get from the market at that point (even if it is only 5%) will outpace any contribution by a factor of over double.

@arh1234 Very likely what people who don't actually invest or who are mostly in bonds are making. But he's definitely not right about what the market could return within a 401k. Years ago, he made a statement conflating the employer match with ROI and stated that the average ROI was 4%. And this guy is selling real estate investing, either "mentorship" or doing "deals" with him where you very likely take ALL the risk and he takes a BIG chunk of revenues.

@arh1234 Yes, technically speaking, of course, passive investing is investing. But I was reacting to the statement they made. They said REAL investing is passive investing and basically said that active investing/stock picking is not REAL investing. So that's why I put it the way I did. If we're picking between the two, and one is "real" and the other is not, I'd go with active as the "real" one.

Not to mention that the equity markets have, overall, done quite well over the last 40 years or so. There’s a potential return to the mean if something causes the asset class to fall back to its historic value.

Curious, not trying to be critical - what does raising a large family have to do with investing?

Almost had it right.... just leave out the brainwashing garbage of your steps (1) - (3) please. And seriously, what the crap does "fail forward" even mean??

Kids will likely be the reason they don't invest enough, honestly.
