This is the previous SeaWorld Shamu show called "Believe" filmed in San Diego, California on March 3, 2009., On February 24, 2010 the orca "Tilikum" drowned an experienced female trainer as at least two dozen tourists looked on from above a whale tank and from an underwater viewing area. Following this event, trainers no longer go into the water with the orcas at SeaWorld parks shows. Tilikum is the subject of the documentary film Blackfish. Please SUBSCRIBE by clicking here:

As a child, my parents brought me to Sea World where I was introduced to Shamu ♡ I got a stuffed animal of an orca which became my favorite thing ever for a while. Orcas became my favorite animal and they still are 20+ years later. I hope these amazing animals are being treated kindly despite being stuck in pools. It hurts to think about.

Hi, so first of all I’m selective cap - I don’t fully support seaworld and I definitely hate that they’re in captivity I‘d much rather see them in the wild. Unfortunately they cannot be set free from these conditions because this is the best they have at the moment. They could probably die out in the wild. I just wanted to say that the trainers do give these orcas the best care they possibly can. 💗

The real Shamu was a mate for Seattle Famous Namu who died in captivity after 1 year while trying to escape back into the ocean to join his pod. Kieko or "Willy" was a captive whale almost his whole life, even after they released him he had not pack/pod/ family where he was released. Seaworld gives HUMANS entertainment. If you were to see these animals up close and personal you would have a different view of how precious their existence is to the global ocean environment.

I went to a behind the scenes of this show because my school has a magnet program for this and trust me in no way they treat them cruelly.i understand how people want to free the orcas but they were born in those tanks and they would not have a chance in the wild if people just let them leave. These orcas do eat regularly,and it was a lot because I had the honor to feed it,they are not being forced to work those are just treats.

It wasn’t until I got older when I realized the types of things these captive animals go thru and how inhuman it is. I will never spend another dollar to see these attractions!! I had been to circuses..zoos..sea world...etc since i was a kid and it was never frowned upon. I grew up in the 80's when all this stuff was at its height. I now knowing what i know would NEVER support something like this. And im ashamed that i took part in it. Im glad that this along with other animal exhibits are now gone or dramatically improved. 🐳 ❤

As a child I was captivated by these shows and animals and thought of them as ambassadors for their species, so I felt less bad about them being in such a small tank as they were helping educate people about ocean conservation. However then I realized as an adult these shows actually never were all that educational, and had such a manufactured pathos covering up the fact it's just a glorified circus act. Not to mention that orca being money-makers at SeaWorld actually harmed the species as other companies around the world wanted to make their own profitable orca shows and capturing orcas (and dolphins, though that started earlier) became a business unto itself. Thankfully as a species they're still prolific but certain populations of them were damaged. Animals this intelligent don't deserve to have their families ripped apart for our entertainment. :( All that said I still thank you for the good video because it is still nostalgic memories for me as a child.

And the thing is they don't actually have a 'relationship' with the trainers. They do all the tricks cause they know they're going to get fish in their mouths. If they don't get that fish they couldn't care less about the trainers. Notice how after every little stunt, they put fish in their mouths. These animals are supposed to swim in the ocean with their pods (families). Not hopping around in bleached water with humans.

Hjk774 1 not really. For us a pool is huge so staying in that wouldn’t be as bad. But the tanks they put these whales are not large enough. An orca can literally circle that tank in a few seconds. So comparing the size of that tank to a orca and a bath tub to a human is pretty accurate since in both you can’t move around that much

Kids enjoy circuses and animal entertainment (let alone their pet cat and dog). They just haven't learned to HATE themselves (as humans) as you have! Humans who aren't self-loathing naturally ENJOY seeing demonstrations of human POWER over the forces of nature. (Human LIFE would not be possible without such power.) Your problem with "greed" only betrays your resentment that others have been more successful than you, materially.

Shamu's was the first intentional live capture of a healthy orca. The three previous orca captures ("Wanda," Moby Doll and Namu) had been more opportunistic. The very young, 14 foot (4.25m), 2000 lb (900 kg) Southern Resident orca was captured by Ted Griffin off Penn Cove, Puget Sound in October 1965 to be a companion for the orca Namu at Griffin's *Seattle public aquarium.* Her name means ‘Friend of Namu’ (alternately 'She-Namu'). However, Shamu did not get along with Namu and so was sold to SeaWorld in San Diego in December 1965. She died in 1971. After 6 years of performance. WIKIPEDIA

For those of you hating on them, a lot of these orcas are bred and raised in captivity. If they didn't want to do it, they''d still get fed. They're giant animals bigger than us. If we released them back into the wild, they'd die because we feed them, keep them healthy, and make sure they're happy. The orcas who don't do shows/tricks usually just get depressed and don't do anything. They enjoy this, and do it because of that. They're not abused, and they're quite happy. They do this kind of stuff in the wild, so the shows replicate how they'd play, except with a bit of human interaction. The whales are too tame to be released, and it's not a prison. They'd show displeasure if they didn't want to be there.

I grew up watching these shows! Just fantastic for a kid to see, but I agree where they where kept was just way too small for them to survive properly. No wonder they were always frustrated. If they can build mega structures for oil, and everything else, then do it also for the Orca's or just leave them alone in the wild and use the money to "Protect" them there from hunters. ... people are killing them in the wild, it's our duty to protect them.

Neither San Diego's nor Orlando's are being kept in an appropriate environment. They're both equally shitty.

It's still better than not having any Orca's at all, which is happening in the wild. I could say the same things about your Dogs and Cats, stop pretending they are part of your families, they are wild animals until you "kidnap, torture, and imprison" them in your homes and call them PETS!

I know the captivity is horrible, but isn't it amazing how this actually happens, communicate with whales to this extent! and they are able to perform this all day everyday like this.. crazy when you think about it right?
@trapmafia4716

It's not really that horrible, it's a different life that's all, they adapt to it. They are mentally stimulated in others ways and are quite spoilt really. Is a dog miserable because it's kept in a yard and not roaming miles and miles like a wild dog does, dogs have way better lives then they would having to fight, hunt and survive against rivals and predotors in the wild, get injuried in the wild and there's no vet or care for you, you slowly starve to death while your wound slowly gets infected and kills you.

I saw this as a child and thought it was amazing. But looking at the reality of it now it's very sad. The tanks are too small and they snatch babies away from their mothers and train them for audiences probably starving them. As amazing as it is to see, I don't think it's fair on the whales. Also think this came to an end when one of the whales wound up killing a trainer, who had been working with him for 15 years who had a bond. Just dangerous and cruel.

Well this is probably the most ignorant take on SeaWorld I've seen. Especially since they have made their funding public and no whales at any of their parks were born in the wild. The reason they cant release them is because at this point it is a death sentence as no orca released has ever survived whether it was wild and rehabbed or born in captivity.

Imagine someone came and took you from your family and friends and put you in a smooth, rectangular room, maybe 500 sq ft. A few months later, another person is deposited in that room - they speak Urdu. And then a third person, who speaks French. Then the person who took you trains you to do some weird pseudo Zumba with these two random people, and if you do it right you get corn chips. And that's it - forever. You never leave the room. How pumped would YOU be?

And the thing is they don't actually have a 'relationship' with the trainers. They do all the tricks cause they know they're going to get fish in their mouths. If they don't get that fish they couldn't care less about the trainers. Notice how after every little stunt, they put fish in their mouths. These animals are supposed to swim in the ocean with their pods (families). Not hopping around in bleached water with humans.

I've seen part of The Cove, and yes I've seen Blackfish. However, The Cove does not apply to Sea World or any other US zoo (thay have refused to take part in such brutal practices) and Blackfish Was very misleading with twisted facts, and inaccurate descriptions and footage. I agree that wild animals should stay in the wild but these animals are no longer wild due to birth in captivity or inability to make it outside of captivity. So, now they are breathtaking ambassadors for those that are in the wild. Helping us learn more about the species so that others can stay where they belong. ^-^

They are still too big for those tiny tanks (the killer whales) also even if the are born in captivity they still have their instincts from their parents who were in the wild. Furthermore, why do you think the shamus attack?
@ToFightOrFlee
@ToFightOrFlee 9 жыл бұрын
I say this with highest respect to you. Just because animals have vast expanses of space in the wild does not mean they must have the same in captivity in order to be happy and healthy. Orca in the wild use all that space because they must in order to hunt and catch food. Without that necessity of moving to seasonal prey locations it stands to reason that they wouldn't need nearly as much space. With regard to why they attack. One large reason is the same as why a pet bird attacks the owner for no apparent reason or a dog accidentally bites its master during play. To much stimulation in the moment and not thinking of the consequences of actions. The largest difference is that an overexcited Orca can do much more damage than a dog. With respect, animal behavior is much more complicated than "it attacked because it was mistreated." or "their wild so of course they'll attack." It's not that simple, that it why aquarists and any other keeper (at least in the US) spend much of their time learning behavior and getting to know the animals individually.
