Part 1 of 2. The famous SeaWorld Shamu "Believe" killer whale show in San Diego, California accentuates the close relationship between killer whales and their trainers and will amaze you with a series of exciting behaviors. Recorded March 3, 2009.
Tilikum is the subject of the documentary film Blackfish. SeaWorld in San Diego is fighting AB 2140, the "California Captive Orca Welfare and Safety Act," would end performance-based entertainment for all 10 orcas in the state.

When I was a kid I went. And it was so much fun. I sat in the front row. And was splashed. But being grown... it's sad to see such an amazing animal trapped. And used to entertain people.

The incredibly bad living standards for orcas in captivity are the problem here, not having to perform for an audience. They're intelligent, are used to learning new techniques from other orcas (due to pods developing their own methods and customs), and are highly sociable. In a utopia where they could be held captive in appropriate conditions, I think they might even enjoy that outlet.

Most people don't understand that orcas r just as smart as humans this video shouldn't break anyone's hearts. It should show u that an animal weighing more than a semi truck can respond and listen to human beings. Even out in their habitat they r known as "killer whales" but can respond and communicate with humans it's absolutely breath taking

It's true that orcas in captivity make me sad, but this is a beautiful show. Thousands of kids will love and appreciate orcas and the importance of marine conservation thanks to the whales in the Shamu show. Which will save many, many orcas in the long run. People can't appreciate these majestic animals if they can't experience them. The whales are obviously adored and cared for here by professional staff. Thank you for posting this!

i have to say when i saw a similar show in orlando with killer whales and dolphins, it was absolutely incredible to get to see them so close and in real life. but at the same time, they really shouldn't be kept in tanks like goldfish.

i feel bad that they are stuck in a tank and have to perform to receive treats/food, but that was beautiful, i love whales and dolphins and yes they should be out in the ocean/sea not in a small tank but you have to admit that was good...id love to be able to do that with a whale...especially shamu...and i could've been on that stage when i was like 5 to feed some dolphins...wish i hadn't passed it now...

@luckyangel500 Have you done any research? If so, I would love to see it because all of the articles I have read on the subject clearly show that Orcas have a greatly reduced lifespan in captivity. In the wild, Orcas may live up to the age of about 80. In captivity most will die before they reach the age of 40.

But we can give dogs or horses all what they have and what they are used to in the wilderness. But we can't give an orca or a dolphin an ocean, only small tanks! A "tamed" dog still lives in its natural habitat, a "tamed" whale not.

When you see how fast they can swim, and then have to drastically slow down... it makes it painfully obvious these tanks are too small to hold such massive creatures. And, it can't be healthy for them to beach on that concrete stage over and over. I can't imagine what it's doing to it's internal organs and skin.

Now I understand y shamu killed that trainer..i would let my stress out on a trainer to if i was locked up..and when he killed that pelican ..I understand because thats his natural instinct and thats what he does to get food in the wild so i feel bad for the animals than i do trainers and if they get hurt..they get hurt thats the end..if they would put live fish in the tanks and actually make the animals hunt for there food and make the tanks have a little more nature to them...

I just got back from a trip to Sea World & I learned that all the animals there are animals that wouldn't be able to make it in there natural habitiat. They go and treat animals who are injured or sick and if they are cured or healed, they get sent back to live freely. And if not, they take them to Sea World and do all they can to help. They do truely care about the animals and if living in captivity is the only way to survive then so be it! It's not cruel, It's all about their love for animals!

This is a great show. I love going to sea world. But I really miss the Shamu Adventure. It seemed like it had more action with the orcas. and the trainers got in the water more than they do now, but thats only because of the inccident that happened in Orlando. My favorite orca is ullisies, the one with the bent dorsal fin. HE IS HUGE!. ABOUT 10,000 POUNDS!

I love people who are OK with these attractions, but then they see movies and it's like.. Oh wow, I seen the light.. When those same people most likely have seen and enjoyed this at some point in their life.. Hell people, Sea World treats their animals better then their own employees... You all don't get mad at Disney for their wild life attractions.. Or Bush Gardens, or the Aquariums.. How come they get free passes, when their accommodations for the animals are probably less then ideal then Sea World's are? Get over it people... Tilikum who fathered over 50% of sea worlds orcas was stolen from his pod in the wild and forced into this hell hole ! They can be moved to a sea side sanctuary where they will be in their natural environment and protected a much better trade off than a chemically treated swimming pool and an unnatural diet of gelatin and little fish when they should be eating seals !!! Anyone who thinks this is sweet is just as sick as the people in the water with them they are not toys ! They are king and queen a pex predators of the sea they should be respected they don’t belong to humans they belong to the ocean

I just got back from SeaWorld San Diego 3 hours ago. We saw the One Ocean Shamu Show twice! It doesn't have the trainers in the water but it was amazing! After doing some research it turns out that the stopped the trainers riding on whales routine because of the danger and accidents happening to the trainers. Then with a new routine that doesn't involve trainers in the water, we no longer have the Believe Shamu Show but One Ocean Shamu instead. It still rocks!

It´s good to know that Orcas are born in captivity. It is also important to have places like sea World to help people understand better this great animals. that understanding on the long run gives you the chance to have better feelings for them, and think in what is better for them.

I know now as an adult that this is not the place for whales to live their life happily but as a kid I remember this being as one of my best memories being so in awe of these beautiful creatures and I know the trainers have a job to do and must love these animals to work with them but I believe even they know they wish the could set them free every once ina while after the show

"...it made me angry to see 'prolapsed uterus' as Taima’s cause of death, knowing how many babies she had been forced to produce by living in confinement at SeaWorld. I was also bothered that both mothers died as baby factories for Tilikum, the father of the stillborns. What is even more maddening is that Gudrun’s stillborn calf was physically winched out of her uterus. First, there was an "original" Shamu, but now all the whales at Sea World are in the Shamu "family". Like it's their last name. I go every summer w/ my kid & thats how they explain how the show is called the Shamu show. Yes- it sux they r in captivity- but these few whales are teaching thousands! This great trainer knew the risks, she would never want anything to happen to Tilikum!
