When I was a kid I went. And it was so much fun. I sat in the front row. And was splashed. But being grown... it's sad to see such an amazing animal trapped. And used to entertain people.
@reasonablyserious Жыл бұрын
The incredibly bad living standards for orcas in captivity are the problem here, not having to perform for an audience. They're intelligent, are used to learning new techniques from other orcas (due to pods developing their own methods and customs), and are highly sociable. In a utopia where they could be held captive in appropriate conditions, I think they might even enjoy that outlet.

AGAIN, i'm not disagreeing, i'm just saying people shouldn't think they're highly educated on something just by watching one 90 minute film.

If you actually take the time to watch Blackfish you'll find that the documentary gives an array of perspectives from people who had direct experience with the corruption and cruelty of Seaworld. Ex-trainers expose how a multimillion dollar industry, is able to capitalise on the exploitation of wild and (as seen with Tilikum) potentially dangerous animals and get away with it by blatantly lying about what goes on. It's pretty damn evident from the first hand footage, accounts and statistics in Blackfish that it in fact IS gospel that the laws on removing completely healthy and happy Orcas from their natural environments and families in order to keep them in captivity for the entertainment of humans needs revision.

KennM12 As lowly as I think of YT anons I doubt Blackfish is all these advocates watched. Even so captivity and forced performances of whales is a pretty easy evil to understand. Blackfish just helped easily expose the powder keg at the perfect time. Big whale in small tank=bad. We kind of don't need 20+ years of expertise in marine biology and whale behavior to know that. The credentials are certainly respectable but like dog fighting the wrongness of it is quite obvious to even us plebs and the science is settled. Sad it took a 2013 documentary but humans are gleefully oblivious about a lot of things.

First, there was an "original" Shamu, but now all the whales at Sea World are in the Shamu "family". Like it's their last name. I go every summer w/ my kid & thats how they explain how the show is called the Shamu show. Yes- it sux they r in captivity- but these few whales are teaching thousands! This great trainer knew the risks, she would never want anything to happen to Tilikum!

I feel so happy to see this beautiful whale, but so sad it doesn’t get to swim all over the ocean. They are so smart and beautiful.

This is a paradox. Its sad to see such a magnificent creature of the sea be confined in the name of entertaining people yet i understand the aspect that educating people about them and putting on shows will make people understand them and appreciate them to not want to kill or harm them.

I remember going to Sea world as a kid, and going up to the tank after the show, seeing the whale and just crying..it was so beautiful, but not happy :(

@IanHJames I don't know enough about echolocation to comment on it, but I do know they still use it in captivity.They're not blinded. Doesn't it bounce back in the wild too? It's not known what causes fin collapse either, it's the collagen melting in their fins because it's much hotter than the wild in Florida or the water pressure. It doesn't harm them, it just looks different. The whales this year died from things that happen in the wild too and can't be treated - I don't blame SW for that.

I loved that show! For people that say it was cruel for the whales,for the orcas taken from the wild yes but not for the one born there.the ones born at sea world don't know anything else so sea world is home and the pools they are kept in are normal for them.they are happy there so I think the breeding program they have is good so they can keep precenting them so people can appreciate them and enjoy them and at the same time none are taken from the wild.
