Had to be "The Jerk". It's all about a guy leaving home.
@chrismofer9 жыл бұрын
in the jerk he leaves home twice, once in the beginning and again when he does the whole "and that's all i need" bit

First part of "Wild and Crazy Guy" side 2. Financial Disclosure about ticket prices and projected concert earnings: "One show... GOODBYE."
@nilsbrunschede56754 жыл бұрын
It's definitely that. Don't know how anyone could argue otherwise.

Half the battle with Paul F Tompkins' comedy is because he's so eloquent and meticulous.

Steve Martin does a bit where he talks about the idea of doing a show where the tickets are exorbitantly expensive and he could make something like 200 million dollars in a single night. He says "one show, goodbye " I believe this to be the Steve Martin bit to which that the young man was referring.

Kinda sad he spent five minutes building a joke and the punchline was ruined by the title of the video.

Ikr. But it's how I found the video again.. so I'm OK with it .

It's Steve Martin from the Jerk when he left his girl and didn't want anything but this thermos, this ashtray, etc. or in this case 200 dollars.

I've never been a huge fan of Steve Martin's stand-up, but I believe that on one of his records he said something along the lines of, "[If I could sell out a stadium at $10,000 a ticket, I'm done]". I heard it on You Made it Weird, or WTF or one of those comedy podcasts. Sorry that I can't be more specific.

It's a reference from The Jerk. How does Paul not know this? He's a comedian.
@doctordistracto83908 жыл бұрын
Isn't that the one where Steve Martin makes millions, not $200, and then goes bankrupt and moves back home, the opposite of leaving?
@kevinsmith54376 жыл бұрын
All these people saying it's The Jerk it's like come on. You seriously think PFT and his friends didn't think of that? 200 dollars has nothing to do with the jerk.

@inf0dump It's from a bootleg called "This Fucking Thing is Short". You can also hear the same story recounted in episode 82 of "Stop Podcasting Yourself".
@moneytimesfifteen14 жыл бұрын
@crgmltn I got it from a link on the aspecialthing forums, in some kind of bootlegs thread. do a little digging and you might be able to find it. however, on a podcast somewhere someone told PFT that this had been leaked and he sounded bummed, so it may have since been taken down.

Watch "The Jerk". The "All I need is this lamp" bit.
@FungusMossGnosis8 жыл бұрын
Maybe he meant Dick Martin from _Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In_, that lost sketch where Martin vows to leave the show after he finds the $200 bill Rowan hid somewhere. A sketch that probably doesn't exist.
@killtrosity51687 жыл бұрын
Its so obvious that he wanted his security deposit back ($200 security deposit).

@Harpsichord25 Any chance you know where to find the bootleg for download?

I believe it's a reference to Steve Martin's bit where he talks about how much money he takes in if he fills up the stadium. Something like: "How much did you pay to get in here? 2 dollars? Well, 2,000 seats at $2 a ticket, that's like $4,000. 2,000 seats at $5 a ticket, that's $10,000. 2,000 seats at $1,000 a ticket, that's 2 million dollars. That's what I'm shooting for. One show... GOODBYE." That certainly fits with the idea that he's outta here as soon as he gets his money.

Obvious reference to something like maybe Maid in Manhattan, or MASH. Maybe.
@beatnikmary5 жыл бұрын
I love how you think it's an "obvious reference" and then list two random references that are clearly bullshit. And end it with Maybe. Came in a little too strong with the Obvious Reference, didn't you?
