I had Monfils in a little Stake punt and after the first set I thought it was over but this legend came back and won two in a row when no one believed in him 😁 This guy might be my new favorite player, I love when players play solid defensive tennis and win with that style
@HockeyMan66612 сағат бұрын
How did he lose the first set 6-1 ?? LMAO
@nathanjen8 сағат бұрын
Unfortunately refusing to deviate from that "solid defensive tennis" is likely what held him back from winning Majors in his career. Still a great career, to be sure, but I think most tennis fans would agree that he underachieved for his level of talent.

Not sure it's bad form. Norrie has made the best of his pretty limited game but I'm not seeing any improvements. He's moving backwards whilst everyone else is moving forwards and I think he is done as a Top 20 player.

Norrie just hasn’t got any confidence in the forehand anymore and that’s his weaker shot. The backhand winner in game 2 just proves how timid he is currently on that side. His game is built around doing damage and being consistent and neither is happening

@Im_marcel.22 сағат бұрын
Disagree. His over reliance on playing defensive is the reason why he never won a slam. The dude’s got some insane power. I’ve seen him play live up close and his offense/injection of pace is seriously scary good. Such a shame he couldn’t figure out the balance/general shift into more of an attacking player. Maybe it’s from all of the amazing highlights he’s gotten from his defensive play that he figured his best tennis was through more defensive style. 😢. Still an amazing career though, full respect and will be sad when he hangs up the racket
@shawnogg820821 сағат бұрын
I don’t like it. Perhaps today trying to get a rhythm, as he was cold. But at his peak he was always easy to calculate in the big matches on big points because he would never come in or set up a winner for himself, just defend or counter. Had he done what Sinner or Zverev did, that is development of an attack that he trusts and the opponent has at least to respect, he would have won slams as the rest was scary good. But you don’t develop that if you don’t practice it in the lower rounds. These days he does it sometimes, but now it is a bit too late.

This Monfils match kinda sums up his career, against lesser opposition his a good level but with no real weapons in his game hence couldn't win the big title matches against the top 10 players
@mandandiКүн бұрын
True. He plays a defensive game. Most of his shots are to the centre of the court, so they are easy to redirect to the corners from an opponent's point of view. Top players do that when they play against Monfils. He beats lessor opposition be getting balls back - athleticism - thus making them desperate enough to make mistakes trying to end the points.
@ozsa3156Күн бұрын
@@mandandi That is incorrect. Central shots are NOT easy to redirect to corners. The whole point of a central shot is to make it difficult to create angle and keep the rally neutral.
@drambitiontm23 сағат бұрын
@@ozsa3156you’re not wrong but TOP players do tend to excel at doing it.
@mandandi23 сағат бұрын
@@ozsa3156 Top players who consistently beat Monfils are excellent at redirecting his central shots. In fact, even Hingis, Davenport, Serena and Venus were excellent at doing that on the WTA too. Initially, that was a tactic employed by some to beat the Williams' sisters too, until they figured out out to move their feet to a stance that allowed them to redirect the shots.
