I am a hunter myself, although I hunt for food and not for “fun,” but I thought I’d give some insight for this type of hunting. These hunts are not cheap, it typically costs several thousand dollars, if not tens of thousands of dollars to hunt animals like these. That money goes towards the local economies, as well as permits. The money from those permits actually goes towards protecting the hunted species from habitat loss and poaching. The “trophy” animals are often very old. The older an animal gets, the larger its horns or antlers get, and the hunters typically aim to get an animal that is at the end of its life, and sometimes it is required to be of a certain size to ensure the hunters are not killing younger animals. It provides a unique experience in nature, harvesting an animal towards the end of its life, and most, if not all, of the money goes towards protecting habitat and threatened species. At face value it can seem cruel, but it is typically at net positive.

I’m not a hunter, I’m a fisherman. I’m not american (I was born in Angola, Africa, and have lived in Brazil most of my life). For those complaining against, If there is anything we can learn from US, regarding nature conservation, I believe it is how to use legal hunting (and fishing) to protect wild species. The fees paid by hunters pay all the research and control structure to ensure the strict management of animals harvesting and habitats protection. Not sure this is the problem in Mongolia, but it is in Brazil. Local authorities, most of the times corrupt, or, at least, negligent, fail to put these kind of programs in place and what we see is a complete destruction. Google for american actions that saved snook in Florida, bears in California, sheeps in Alasca. Last but not least, this is not shooting an animal confined in a small space. Hunters are demanded to their limits to pursue these animals thru days, in their natural habitat, inhospitable terrains for hunters. The beautiful videos show just the climax and makes it seems easy. Believe, hunting, in this condition, is absolutely ethical. Unfortunately, different from fishing, where you can catch & release, there is not this option in hunting. But, as much one harvests a wild sheep and eat it (not only for a head hanging in the wall), this is 100% fair. Disclaimer: I’m against hunting in any non-ethical condition (e.g., killing a snow leopard or a bear just for the head/skin) and not under strict wildlife management programs.

I am also a hunter, I hunt deer and small game in Maryland and I've started to hunt in Hawaii as well. However, anything I kill is going to be eaten, I cannot understand why people simply kill for the sake of killing and animal. For those opposed to hunting please consider guys like me, watch a video from the channel Deer Meat for Dinner, the guy is like many of hunters that appreciate nature, the sacrifice of the animal, and waste not one ounce of meat. There are other channels like the beagle hunter that also show ethical hunters that hunt small game like The Beagle Hunter. Watch those videos then re-consider your position on hunting and guns. I grew up and live in Mongolia. I used to hunt/kill animals until very recently, 3-4 years ago. There is a thrilling feeling when you successfully hunt because men hunted for thousands of years, it is in blood. You feel thrill, success, adrenaline, whatever. For Mongolians, of course there is some economic reason for hunting rather than only for those feelings. When I researched western hunters' self defending reasons they write or say only one argument "killing old animals are helpful for regeneration of younger animals", but I could not find any reasonable scientifically grounded proof. So my conclusion is very simple "it is just for those feelings". Western hunters are hunting for FUN, nothing else. My decision for myself is a modern man should seek those feelings from other adventures. Killing animals for fun should stop. It is 21st century.
