FYI for others hung up: called Pacific Cycle for more help-- they pointed me to ParkTool.com > Fix > Repair for videos that can help with specific scooter assembly/repairs. This SevenFortyOne video is spectacular and helped me a lot, but I needed specific fixes for out-of-the-box assy fails. Our Mongoose Expo came with forks and handlebar bracket oriented backwards and needed to loosen stem binder bolt to flip bracket. Confusing because you assume they got the orientation right out of the factory and you can't figure out why the front doesn't look right at first. Also, front side-pull caliper needs a major centering adjustment and I don't have a torque wrench- calling a family lifeline in for this cluster. Neither of those situations are in the owner's manual.

Its quite simple if you've ever put a bike together before. I didn't read the instructions and had it done in about 30 minutes. I highly recommend you ditch the spinner rear brake cables and run a single straight cable to the back and restring the front outside of the stem. Also make sure you put grease on the wheel bearings. Front and back were completely dry on mine.

User guide page 13 says “It is recommended that the threads and all moving parts in the parts package be lubricated prior to installation. Note: we recommend using a lithium based grease on the parts before assembly.” Did you use, or do you see a need to use, lubrication on any parts? Or is this a carryover from a mongoose bicycle assembly manual do you think? I keep looking at the pictures and watching your video and I don’t really see a place for lubrication! Thank you so much for the great guide!
@SevenFortyOne4 жыл бұрын
Well, the manual is the official word on this product but I can't see why it would really be ncessary to add lubricant to the fasteners for something like this.
@i_want_my_mtv4 жыл бұрын
@@SevenFortyOne Thank you!
@i_want_my_mtv4 жыл бұрын
PS, pg 31 Mongoose expo scooter user manual has a Lubrication Schedule for parts they recommend to lubricate with either oil or lithium based grease, depending on the part, for good maintenance especially in wet or dusty areas. Includes brake calipers, brake levers, brake cables, brake lever and caliper pivot points, wheel bearings, headset. I was surprised- it is for scooter, not bike. May want to do good maintenance with the hope of never having to build one of these again, just my two cents.

The grittiness may indicate something is wrong with the bearings. Something could have gotten broken if they were over tightened.

Can you tell me how to get the stem bolt on the gooseneck to catch the tread if it was loosened all the way?
@SevenFortyOne4 жыл бұрын
Turn the scooter upside down and see if you can get it to catch that way. That will allow the cone nut to contact the end of the bolt if it has come completely off. If not, you may have to take the handlebars completely off, then flip the scooter over so the cone nut comes out, reattach the cone nut to the long bolt in the handle bars one or two turns, then reinstall everything and tighten it up.
