Many observers were tipping Sabatini or Graf to win this title. Turns out Seles and Sanchez outclassed them in straight forward semis. Fast forward a year, same semis, monumental matches. Miss those days…

There was so much hype about this French Open because it seemed like #1 was up for grabs. In the end, it turned out to be quite a disappointment. Gaby had peaked way too soon that year and played a strange match in the semis. Steffi said she had a "black out day" against Arantxa. Bud Collins said it was the worst performance he'd ever seen from a great player. Monica had looked vulnerable that Spring, losing to Sabatini and Graf on clay, and going a set and a break down to Sandra Cechini in an earlier round here at the French Open. But she proved she was by far and away the most consistent player in 1991 in the big tournaments.

@@zeddeka you’ve summed it up perfectly :) Some of the hype restarted a few weeks later as Graf briefly regained the top in August that year (which shows how effed up the ranking system had back then since Seles was the holder of two slams, the YEC, 4 titles and had played finals in all tournaments she had entered in 1991) before Seles went on for 91 weeks straight and would probably have gone longer had Hamburg 1993 not taken place…

Probably the best drop shot of all time. She could even hit it on the rise off both wings. You could never see it coming at all either, and she used it at the most random but perfect times. Most of her drop shots were outright winners that just left her opponent completely frozen. Hingis also had amazing drop shots, but she missed them more often than Monica and sometimes they sat up too high.

There's an interesting and amusing storyline behind it. She'd dyed her hair so much over the preceding few months (not doing a good job of it at home) that it had actually gone green and was in a real mess (look at her hair in the Australian Open 1991 as an example). She needed it taking care of so paired up with the haircare company "Matrix" and they basically cut it much shorter to get rid of the damaged hair. Both she and Matrix did a lot of publicity for a while - I think up to around the 1991 US Open.

For Monica, there was quite a lot going on at this French Open. If she didn't defend her title, she'd lose the world #1 title back to Steffi Graf. Monica had also been talking about how she was feeling so much pressure that year being #1, and she was amazed in hindsight at her six tournament winning streak in 1990. She'd had an up and down Spring that year, losing matches to Navratilova, Sabatini, and twice to Graf. At the French Open she had been a set and a break down to Sandra Cecchini. She then had a very see-saw match with Martinez, winning the first set easily before really struggling to close it out in a very tight second set. The semi final against Sabatini was touch and go until rain interrupted the match at 4-4 and Monica came back a billion times better, and Gaby faded. Here in the final, Monica had some scrappy periods and looked perhaps a little tired at times, but as was her trademark, she brought out her best tennis when it mattered. I wonder if she was suffering here from the shin splints she said forced her out of Wimbledon.

This was the match that Sanchez should have won. She played well and quite fit and confidence after beating Graf. And 1998 was in Monica hand with that Set point.. 😊

Aranxta ralentit sciemment le jeu. Car la vitesse " aller retour" d'une balle est un paramètre qu'elle connait. Ce serait plus favorable à Seles si Aranxta Sanchez mettait une vitesse élevée à l'échange. Au lieu de ça, elle joue plus lentement, bouge son adversaire et à l'occasion, elle accélère. Avance. Et contre. Tactiquement elle joue le bon match, quoi qu'il advienne. L'accélération est un coup qui est en train de disparaitre du tennis moderne. C'est dommage. Bon, question accélération dans les brèches et les contre pieds, Seles était une référence. Une géomètre experte.

The only top player they had they liked was Mauresmo. They certainly cheered her whenever she played Graf or Seles or a Williams. Pierce they didn't like most of the time since she wasn't real French, although when they were happy with her they cheered her over Graf or Seles like 94, 97, 2000, but when they weren't happy with her they cheered for everyone against her. They didn't like Halard, nobody liked Tauziat, and they didn't really like Testud.

Arantxa really not playing the percentages well in this match. Trying to out-slug Monica, going for way too much at times and making lots of errors. She became a much better match player in the years to come.

​@@jansnauwaert1785​​certainly, Monica usually had her number. But Arantxa definitely played a fairly stupid match here. It was like she'd had adrenaline on her cornflakes that morning. Making errors, getting angry. You need only compare this match with their 1998 final to see how Arantxa improved as a match player. In 1998, she used her slice backhand more, opened up the court and constructed the points. She also kept her composure better.

The translation of what you are saying is this... "I didn't like Seles. I liked Graf. Don't criticize Graf." That doesn't change the fact that Graf was well known from putting up stink about calls.. uh remember 93 Australian Open final? Having said that, Graf wasn't even close to Sanchez in the whining department about calls.
