As much as it s always painful to watch Steffi loose, as I'm a massive Steffi's fan, I can only give it to Monica for her amazing tennis and mental quality. Martina Navratilova and Steffi changed tennis because of their athleticism and Monica changed tennis because of her power on both sides. I think Monica and Serena are the strongest player mentally that as ever been their shots making on important points always made the difference. You can see how Monica inspired Serena. It is such a shame...I'm so pissed off because of Hamburg we did not have the Federer-Nadal match up that Steffi and Monica were going to be... we could have had so many great finals/matches...Tennis was boring after Hamburg Steffi worked so hard to match up Monica that when Monica was gone, let's be honest, there was not much more competition for a while... the French final in 92 is for me the best. Also Monica won 2 of their last 3 matches before the stabbing so I don’t know what you are talking about. Monika was so much better than Steffi in those years prior to stabbing in the spring of 1993. Steffi lost so many matches, finals especially that she played against Monika from 1989 to 1993. Monika was an engima for Steffi. Untill so called "mad" fan of Graf did something that was unheard of and unimaginable nor it happened anywhere, anytime in any sport, before or after.... That was probably the only way to stop Monika. In my mind that is why Graf's career will always be, not by her fault of course, tainted and marked us "unclean". Say what you want about these two. Absolutely unbelievable players and set the bench mark for and style for the womens game. However I still think Graf would have dominated eventually. Even before the stabbing you could see Graff was adapting to Monica's game and absorbing her shots better. Horrific things happened to seles and she would have clearly been her rival but let's not forget steffi had a huge op on her spine during her career and there was the whole blackmail/fraud thing with her Dad etc which had an affect on her personal life and play so who knows what both of them could have done had the stabbing and operation not happened etc. We can go back and forth about who was better etc but the people that have played them both and some of the greatest players off all time consider Graf to be the greatest female player of all time in terms of adaption and all around play.

Just watching these highlights - I can’t help but think that Steffi could have played her topspin backhand a little more. Yes, her slice backhand is a great shot, no question, but when rallying with Seles here it’s clear that Seles was grooved to it. The high-bounce court and warm conditions would have enhanced the topspin shot as well. Anything to break Monica’s rhythm up a bit more and hopefully get a weaker/shorter shot that she could attack with her forehand.
