As a couple, Cedric and Monique have been together more than 10 years. We had the world at our feet - two successful jobs (my history: P&G, Uniqlo, Facebook) across continents, a flourishing start-up on the side, and we were even planning a wedding in the near future. But what happens when tragedy hits that threatens to shatter the life we built together?
On a business trip to Singapore, I was found on the floor with a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) which put my life on the line, forever changing it and creating a new normal for me and Cedric. I was in a coma for 21 days. When I woke up, I could not stand up, walk, swallow, eat, talk or write well, no abilities, and with half of her skull gone, a brain processing skills at 40% and right eye blind. When everything else is taken from you, you have a clear view of what’s left: grit, determination, and the will not just to survive, but to thrive.
Our story made us push to reflect on the changing nature of who we truly are, how we love, and why it matters. The story is broader than TBI, it also covers our cultural differences, the struggles of going back to work, infertility and creating a new path.
