I'm a recent physics graduate with a passion for stand up comedy. I've been applying at science museums all across the US to work in an educator, presenter role. I finally got a job offer for $15/hour at a great science museum. But that pay was low for a college graduate. My mom convinced me not to take it. 6 months later, I'm still looking and have taken a big hit to my morale since. Lately I've been thinking, maybe Mom was dead wrong on this one.

She gave a great speech and there is a lot to take away from it. But this definition of passion doesn't really hold up in many scenarios. In life there will be many instances where you will need to give your full attention and energy to things right in front of you that you don't enjoy but HAVE TO do for one reason or another.

My notes: - Passion is a feeling, not a plan. And Feeling's change. - Not everything you do needs to fit into your "passion". Just try things. Go out there and try things. - Don't worry if your career isn't something you want to do for the rest of your life - Success fuels passion more than passion fuels success - There is nothing wrong if you do not have a clear passion. Try things you like! - You could easily miss out on your passion by not focusing on what you're doing now, if you're focused on looking for your "passion" - Don't wait for your passion to show up. Solve problems you like to solve. My key takeaway: Go try things and do things you like instead of purely focusing on finding your passion (or trying to do things you think will fit into it) because passion is not a plan, it's a feeling, and feelings change.

I needed to hear this. I’m a senior in high school and everyone always asks me what I’m gonna do after high school, what college I want to go to, what career choice I want and what am I passionate about. I always answer “I don’t know”. I feel panic because it seems like other kids my age now where they wanna go they want to do with their life and I feel useless when I compare myself to them. I needed to hear this because it’s just makes sense that there’s nothing wrong with me and that I had the wrong idea of what passion was and it was stressing me out! I feel relieved knowing that I’m normal and that she said what I could do in the meantime to go after opportunities. I’m not so scared of “being stuck” anymore. This was so helpful! Edit: I’ve responded to some of u in the replies. Thanks to everyone who has replied!

Do what you love doing. But always be open to loving something different. Some of the happiest people I've known switched their major after discovering they had an interest in a (often completely) different subject area. passion isn't really a 'feeling' as such, yes, you feel it, but it is related to a specific set of skills that you want/need. It is the intense want for a certain interest. So, although it is an interest, and yes, they can change, so can everything else. What doesn't??

Well this may be interesting to hear. I have had perfect scores and high scores in tests throughtout my life. However they havent been usual that every test score i get is the best score in the class. The best scores that i gotten have given different feelings some of joy and others of emptiness of something blank with no color. Something that it can be the best score in the class but to me just a number that brings no feelings at all. The brain can be so complex.I willbe honest. I have to say that success has fueled my passion. But there are times when it has not. The brain is a complex thing.

Sure but a little bit of a misconception. Success does not come without starting something and working through it. If you don't have any initial passion where is the drive to even start? There has to be atleast enough interest in something to get started. Now this doesn't need to be this overwhelming life passion but there does need to be enough interest or a spark to get started on something.

Exactly! Even if I love a certain hobby of mine, the idea of doing it for the rest of my life sounds daunting to me and hearing this talk reassures me that not every job I have need to be aligned with my "passions", heck, not even whatever degree I may end up getting. I'm currently trying to narrow down my options but it's difficult to find a career that is both fulfilling to me personally and pays decently, and has a decent work-life balance. Instead of searching for your passions, try searching for your values instead and that will help you see how many opportunities there really are. Committing to a university to attain a degree that will leave you in debt then suddenly realizing it's not what you want to pursue is a scary though, which is why I'm so obsessed with wanting to known exactly what I will be doing in the next 5,10,20 years. And believe me, I need to remind myself this as much as others, you don't NEED to know. Work is a big part of our lives, but there are also other things that matter most :)

I've struggled my whole damn life with the question: what is my passion? And this lifted such a huge burden from my shoulders. It is okay to just live and see where your life takes you, you don't need to know what you're going to do in 5 years. I love to work jobs that last for few months and can sometimes be continued few months longer. I've always been told that this is the wrong way of doing it but what's the point doing something for years and being totally miserable when you could've been doing many jobs and be curious every time you change jobs, eventually ending up with so many experiences and same amount of money as from the boring option. Best advice is the one: ''Just do something. Go do it''. What ever takes you forward at this point in life, just do that.

I agree! Being passionate about education and advancing your mind is most important. There is never an answer of what you're "supposed to do." I love when Terri said passion can come and go. There's no way to measure how passionate you are about something because you could lose that passion tomorrow. But one thing that will always benefit you, and will always move you forward is education. New material. Whether it comes from a book, a TED talk, or a podcast. Learning something new everyday keeps you well rounded and growing. Do you think it's hard for current students to stay passionate about learning? Do you think students get discoursed by searching too hard for their "perfect career" or "forever passion?" I'd love to hear feedback!!

When applied, I felt alive!

This is a great concept that I've always tried to put into words, but I couldn't. She did a great job of making sense of it. People have a hard time believing me when I tell them that there are days that I was happier at some of the minimum wage jobs I've worked than at my higher paying salary job I have now. The reason I was happier is that I put in the effort to make customers happy. Whether it was selling lumber and concrete or making lattes and sandwiches, I always strived to make sure customers left happy. The feeling of satisfaction when someone says that you made their day just by taking an extra minute to make their sandwich a certain way or making sure they had everything they needed to finish their Pinterest project is fulfilling in itself. It's not about what you do, or how much you're paid, it's about the satisfaction you find through your contribution. If you feel like your work doesn't matter and doesn't make any difference, then you'll never be motivated to do it and that's how you end up miserable. I didn't grow up dreaming of selling 2x4s and concrete, but I still found fulfillment in doing it well. Now, I strive to apply that same principle to my current job. How do I contribute, how does my work impact the lives of others, of the company as a whole? Am I really making a valuable contribution, or am I just punching in and out to collect my paycheck? Each day I can either go home and tell my family I made a difference today, even if it was something small, or I can be frustrated because it doesn't feel like I really did anything with my day. It becomes a conscious choice.

For the record, I washed windows for 5 years to put myself through college. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you how much I enjoyed it. I am passionate about clean glass. In fact, last month my 7 year old son begged to wash our house windows. My three kids and I smiled and laughed while we passionately washed the windows. If you don't believe me just ask my wife, she'll roll her eyes and shake her head while admitting it's all true. To prove your point, I only learned about my passion after stating my own window washing business because it seemed like a good way to make money. Last point, one of my favorite songs is "when I fall" by BNL. It's about window washing.

I'm a gearhead. That is my passion. I'll never be rich, I'll spend my entire life covered in grease, dirt and petroleum products. I'm sore at days end, I'm exhausted and covered in filth every day. But when I start driving home from work, I turn on the metalhead rock and by the end of three blocks, I've got a smile you could see on Google maps. My advice to everyone is to find something that you can do that gives you satisfaction at the end of day regardless of how you feel or look. Money is great, but happiness..... That is the the secret of a lifetime career, and emotional stability. Jobs may blow, bosses may be pricks, but if you can smile about what you have done on your way home, you are in at the very least a halfway decent place. Amazing enough, this also applies to every aspect of your life. Thonk about it....

Reading the comments I think that it was the best TED talk for those who aren't sure what their passion is and were afraid to try anything lest they fail. And for some it was the worst talk because she emphasized the value of money. You could try to follow your passion if you have it figured out but it's difficult if you aren't suceeding and yet the bills keep coming all the same. Kudos to those who have made fortunes on their passions and good luck to those who are so afraid of trying anything for they might end up searching for something to do their whole lives.

I feel like this lady is well-meaning and everything, but I don't think she knows what not having passion at all is like. There are people who make good money and have a job, but struggle to get out of the bed in the morning because the futility of it all. Her saying 'your passion follows you' is honestly very disingenuous. People who basically do busy work for their career and have nobody that will notice if they disappear one day don't have "Passion" that follows them around. They see the world as ultimately pointless, just a cycle of going through the motions to reach the next day until they die.

The hiring manager doesn't want to hear that my passion (or just something I love doing) is creating and wearing costumes or making hand-crafted art. They want to hear (if I'm interviewing for a graphic designer position) that I'm passionate about marketing or design, or whatever. They don't want your real-world answers. I also love that you mention how this question can be and often is triggering and stressful. And this part - 'you don't follow your passion; your passion follows you' - So true!

I'm turning 27 soon and have spent years switching majors and taking time off until I dedicated myself to a major that I thought I ought to be passionate about. Now that I've finished my uni, gone on an internship and have been trying to find work, I'm starting to realize that this tendency to focus on passion has deprived me of years of growth and potential opportunities but also that it's okay for me to think about different ventures. Hearing this talk fills me with a lot of hope that I can still find my own way of doing things by helping others, rather than thinking just about myself.

Choose to do what you love. Just go find things that you love (try things) and choose them (can be multiple things). Passion is a feeling you get when you are doing what you love. So therefore... you can choose passion. It's a feeling, and you can choose to have that feeling.

You're not supposed to do what you love, you're supposed to do the right thing. Nobody loves cleaning public toilets or stuffing products into supermarket shelves for example, but if nobody did it society would collapse.

Her story evoked tears and resonated deeply with me; I felt a strong connection as if she mirrored aspects of my own life. It's remarkable how our birthdays are merely a week apart. Witnessing the impact that comes from pouring into others and giving generously is truly rewarding. Our community thrives on hard work and giving back, and hearing her story was just what I needed.

I am glad she said that....my first job was in a shoe chain shop where I was trained to run a business and got paid a salary. I felt rich and happy. I then ran 4 pubs in London for a famous chain which was a nobody brand back then. I learnt so much about human beings daily fights, arguments, weddings, politics, street stalls and led a team of funny people. I then got a job in a mad office selling candidates for interviews on the phone. I picked up a job in security placed my 2 school friends and then me. After I was promoted to a Manager but then left to travel the world. I came back and worked in a old psychiatric hospital supporting admin staff. I got promoted to a manager and then off I went to another job. It goes on like this. I teach children, adults and volunteer because I get Meaning out of helping people to pass exams, and make choices they never thought were possible. I tell them to try and then go with it. I am still experimenting with life and amazed at how far you can go if you take risks, Having money to pay stuff is so important. There is my answer to the next step. Things change and so do our feelings.

You just summarized my entire life in 10 minutes. I've turned down so many good ideas and so many people who loved me trying to find THE perfect one. Because what if I chose the wrong one and lost on an opportunity to get something/someone better in the process? I guess I really need to switch gears and start working on something rather than sitting around waiting for my stars to align. Thank you so much for this talk! I think, you've changed my life, for the better.

Passion is not a feeling. Passion arouses feelings. Passion is knowledge about what you MUST do. You must do it and feel compelled to do it, because you have knowledge that it MUST be done, that the world would be a better place it is gets done, and if you don't do it, who will? To understand what passion, purpose, success, and happiness are about, read the book "Our X Factor". I think this will change your mind. We all have an X Factor... Bookmark each day with success and happiness

Exactly right. Try things, do things and passion follows. This is the way I live my life, was once a knitting and crochet teacher and designer, now working at Sam's Club stocking shelves. Life takes twists and turns regardless of what we think we want. Be present and ride the waves that life provides.

I feel so much relief now. Thank god i found this video today. I was struggling to find out my passion for almost 2 years. Just to find out my passion i did so many things but never found it. It took me so many years to understand that i don't have any particular goal or passion in my life. I love to do different things. Its difficult to choose one profession or passion for a whole life. Sometime i thought it is a gift so i can explore myself, can try different things in just one life. But when i see people, friends around me who have their career, living their life i immediately got depressed because they are Something. Nurse, chef, engineer, but me Nothing. But from now on i will do the things which makes me happy instead of searching for passion.

This lady nailed it.... Awesome speech... This is what i think about sometimes. Before bumping into this video, i have thought about the same... The social pressure of finding a passion is exhausting and it's terrifying everyone. Passion doesn't have to be a yardstick of your life's quality. Not having a passion is completely okay. Ts okay if you just are happy as in doing what you are doing right now. You need not to worry about.. Most things in life catch you automatically like your soulmate, your purpose and obviously your passion. You don't have to look for it every time... When people ask me what's my passion is, i tell them this . That my passion os to find passion.. My passion is to find, to search things. To be passionate about many more things that I can be passionate about. I don't want a stagnant life. A life where I just have a well-defined talent or passion, and do what I suppose to do just because I. Am passionate about it.. That should change. Life should be dynamic. It should be interesting. That's why my passion is to search and develop myself to the edge of my best self.. That's my passion. This is so important for every young lad out there who are been tortured and pressurized of this "find your passion" thing... Its good if you got one, but it's interesting if you not.

This is one of the best speeches I have ever heard. I've been trying to find my passion for years. I needed to hear this. The truth is that passion comes after we start doing something. People waste years trying to find their "passion'. "follow your passion" is the worse advice one can receive. It's like chasing dust in the wind.

Absolutely! Realized that a long time ago. I've done so many different jobs in my life. I was not passionate about any of the things i did. But the passion of being part of something bigger then me. Accomplishing tasks, being a team player, helping people, etc those things fueled me in all i did. Take your passion where ever it is that you go.

Such a powerful message. I’ve spent the past 3+ years, trying to discover my passion and calling for a career, but have been so stagnant and haven’t made any real concrete decisions which has been spiraling me into a negative cycle of depression and anxiety. our passion will come when we make sacrifices in the present that lead us to greater things. Waiting for that “perfect” moment, opportunity, or interest is a recipe for disaster.

When I was in high school and college, my teachers and professors would occasional remind us that we, the graduating students, were going to go out and change the world. What they didn't tell us is that most of us would not change the world. Simply living in the world can be rewarding enough.

I've always been an explorer. I LOVE learning about many different things. I'm so curious about such diverse subjects. It's led me to many different jobs and many different strange opportunities. Here's what I feel: we need money. It's important that we have it to survive. But if everything you do is judged by whether or not it will make money for you at some point, that is kind of like being a slave to money. Life isn't all about the almighty dollar. There are so many people out there who have been told since grade school that they need to find something and become great at that one thing and do it for the rest of their lives. I'm not saying it's a bad thing if you know what's that one thing is for you, and I don't think that the speaker is suggesting that either. I think the point is that you aren't defective if you don't know what that one thing is and you shouldn't spend your time searching and waiting. Engagement with life will give clarity and direction much more than idleness.

I guess everyone is different, but I know a whole lot more people that are very good at their job, but hated it than people who are doing what they love but not being successful. I was very successful in my previous career, but I hated it. Finding your passion is a process, and for many it takes a long time to figure out exactly what it is. The fallacy is that we should know right away what we are passionate about. I agree completely with her on the "don't wait, just start doing" part, however. IMO, that's part of how you learn what you do and don't like.

I recently got 2 part time jobs and this word is encouraging to remain diligent with what I have which is a lot better than doing nothing at all. This message is so inspiring to take what I have and go all in and allow my passion to follow me not the other way around. So good!!!
