Monitor Engineer Line Check (read description)

Here's a quick little line check (53 inputs) from last night in monitor world.. Usually the line check is just FOH saying "House" and me saying "monitors" then the backline tech moves onto the next input. But this video was recorded when I was knew to this touring camp and I was using the setup a previous engineer advanced so the shout was triggered by a foot switch and it didn’t get recorded that’s why you’ll notice me talking at times and you can’t hear me, that was me talking to the FOH engineer. He and I have both changed our setups. Now we share stage racks and he gets all talkbacks and his own mix of them and controls the level himself and I don’t have to engage my “talk to FOH” manually. If I need to get ahold of him during the show I use the clear com beacon instead.
Okay back to reality. Since this was a co headlining tour our "on stage" inputs get re-patched during change over (just the sub snake lines). Having said that, we don't really have a set order for this just who ever is ready first. We can do it quicker than this but 4 minutes is the norm if all is going as it should.
For those of you who are new to this or just interested in general I'm sure you'll appreciate the content as I would have appreciated it myself 10 years ago when I was starting out. Some things not seen are my wireless scan I do as soon as the band before us is off stage (to verify that my mid day soundcheck wireless frequencies are still good). Other than that I send noise to my wedges and fills to verify they work and are full range and that's basically it. It only takes a couple of minutes once all the on stage chaos is nearing a close.

Ya I learned that workflow a few years ago and have taken it everywhere with me. We are listening for a basic clean line without pops, crackles, and hums, we aren’t really listening for the tonality of anything unless something is sounding like complete shit. This is done so we can be efficient. We can get through 60 lines in 3-4 minutes and then we have maybe 5-6 minutes after to work on something if there was an issue with how something actually sounds.

How do you listen back to what's coming through? Do you have smaller monitors by your desk or do you use headphones only?

I’m wearing custom fit in ear monitors all show and soundcheck long. It’s got everything from the stage, plus some talkbacks from techs, a radio, and our clear comm setup all plugged into it.

Monitor engineers usually use IEMs for monitoring artists who use IEMs too and then use a wedge for maybe an artist using a wedge,

Hi yes I’m using in ears. Everyone in my band wears them and that’s how we do our show. Whether I’m checking lines, listening to a single mic, or an entire mix it’s all in-ears.

Silly question, when doing the line check, are the audience able to hear the drummer checking each kit piece? Or is it just really loud in the stadium/arena/outdoor/where ever you are? 🤔
@snapascrew
@snapascrew Жыл бұрын
I'm sure they can sorta hear it in the background but there's house music playing and anywhere from 1600 - 30000 people talking amongst themselves so it's not too loud.
