Today's my first go on an SD series console, this was by far the most helpful video I've thusfar found. It was great to see you work and pick up the workflow a bit, the clear communication between everyone made it quite easy to follow along. Thank you!

Do you use crowd mics, what is the typical EQ and treament on them ?
@marcuspee933 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, given the option, I much prefer having crowd mics. I usually start with the positioning, as that is most prominent in how it sounds. If possible I hang it from truss/beam from above, as to avoid being much closer to any one person and risking it being a "front participant mic" Typically I start with a HPF up to 200Hz, and depending on the reflections of the room, a LPF down to 5-7kHz. I'll clean up the low mids as I see fit, and really only feed just enough of the mic into the IEM mixes, and have a fader to ride it, so that when the band really takes off, I can pull it down a little to afford clarity to my mixes, and when the band dies down to let the congegration sing, push it right back up. I hope that helps.

Are you switching b/t mixing and flipping faders to adjust the level in each of the band members ears

Maybe a silly question but is a monitor engineer's console different to a FOH console?
@marcuspee934 жыл бұрын
Hi Cam, it's not a silly question at all! In reality the console might not be different, but the setup, layout and configuration of a FOH console vs a Monitor console is different. Many people do monitors from a FOH console as well, but with a dedicated monitors console, you find yourself in a much more flexible position. :)
@elektricdrop4 жыл бұрын
@@marcuspee93 thanks for the clarification! Is a monitor desk fed the same inputs as the FOH desk through a stage box?
@marcuspee934 жыл бұрын
@@elektricdrop yep! There are multiple configurations for this, it could be an analog split so that both consoles have separate gain control for all the inputs, or in our case, we have both consoles sharing the same SD rack (digital stage box) and we share the same input gain. Only one operator is in charge of it, though, and it usually is monitors.

@@marcuspee93 Ahh I see! So, does this mean the audio to the mixing desks can just be through Ethernet instead of using a multi core cable?

Why have you everything squashed with so much compression?
@marcuspee93 Жыл бұрын
Hi James, the audio for this was ruined as I was feeding a spare IEM pack into the camera input and wasn’t monitoring my recording levels, I actually had to do a lot of de-clipping using iZotope RX5 plus other things to recover the audio. Was my first video attempt so it was a learning experience!
@jamesmccabe1702 Жыл бұрын
@@marcuspee93 Don't need decent KZbin audio to see that you have compression on every input.....why squash the life out of everything?
@marcuspee93 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesmccabe1702I'd like to differ, if you look VERY closely, the compressors on most channels aren't engaged.. they're bypassed. The GR meters light up, but thats just the console. In saying that, on the instances we use compression, there's tonal compression (kick, snare, etc) but also, yes, we help some with a bit of compression where needed. Compression would help in ensuring that no one has a bad time with someone else poking out madly in a mix whenever anyone gets too dynamic, but of course, use your discretion (and you ears!) when using compression where necessary. I would often revisit the compression settings during rehearsals and even fine tune them during the service if you know.. energy levels differ.
