Ajahn Sumano Bhikku answers life's questions.
This is part 01 of the full dvd documentary " Monk In The Mountain".
A Journey into the forests north of Bangkok revealing
the life of an extraordinary and unusual monk from the
western world.
Ajahn Sumano Bikkhu
Being a student of law and an American entrepeneur,
Ajahn achieved great success before dropping it all.
Or going for it all, as he would say.
Please join Ajahn and me, Greg Carroll, in this
documentary as we learn lessons that will resonate
with spiritual and sensitive beings.
Listening to Ajahns simple and clear ideas will help
all of us deal calmly with the overwhelming
circumstances we face everyday. He knows well the
Path on which he will take you, and make sure you
do not lose the way.
Questions about fear, meditation, religion, karma
and who we are will be answered in profoundly simple
and direct ways. Ajahns insights reflect the wisdom
of a man who has already taken the journey inward
via long and comprehensive meditation practice from
which answers arrive spontaneously and intuitively.
This is no ordinary documentary. Experiencing it will
motivate you, to observe the daily events of your life
with more awareness and clarity. You will fully know
how it feels to be here and now, in the present moment.
His wisdom looks down on the world from vantage
points of simplicity, and clarity... it transcends time. Amazon Associate links

I copied the six videos to MP3 format and uploaded to my Sony Walkman. It just so happened, I started a new job where I had to travel by train for 10 minutes every day. I listened to his teachings for months. This man IS very enlightened!!

I actually met him by coincidence, i was visiting a temple nearby where the thai monks told us (friend&me) that a "farang"-monk was living nearby. So they led us over to him and had a very good chat :] Thanks for the vid

Good take on the old adage "I think therefore I am" at the end. The thinking is actually come after the arising of thought. How thought arises is the mystery. People's personality fits into this perfectly. Thought arises then they think it further and action takes place thus give them the "that's the way he or she is" appearance.

The thing is you create your own pleasure and suffering, its a process of consciousness attributed to result of labeling via 'communication' a specific experience. The psychology of human language, 'logic' is just-a-word.

For clarity, his name is part name, part title. "Ajahn" ("a" as in "ask /soft "j" as in "Azerbaijan" / "ahn" sounds like "on") means teacher, and refers to someone with a respected 10 year study & practice of the dhamma. "Bhikkhu" ("bee" + "koo") means monk/mendicant etc. These are titles, not names like Sumano is, which is given to him as his "monk name" when he ordains.

I always thought the opposite: life is pure joy; you have this body that if you sit very still or stand something will start to hurt. But we have this giant gift: 99.99% of the time you just need to move a little and the pain goes away. Isn't that GREAT? This monk needs some Prozac. It's about the most depressed monk I've seen. Maybe he wanted to win the jackpot.

I am a Buddhist. With very much due respect, I think Ajahn Sumano looks at lives too pesimistically. I believe when one is enlightened, he/she looks at lives and everywhere with joy even if things are really bad around him/her. I know the benefit of meditation is to observe so as to have a relief from single mindedness and stress. I never heard Buddha taught about reincarnation. It was Hindu's. He taught interconnectedness and causal law. The fact we are here, there were causes in the past.

@barbarbarbar2 The earliest Buddhists texts with dialogue attributed to the Buddha make it clear rebirth is one of the fundamental tenants of Buddhism. You can believe what you want but the texts show he certainly did teach rebirth, it wasn't just Hindus. Try reading the Pali canon instead of a book from someone giving their take on Buddhism.

Indeed, we shouldn't focus on whether samsara is a real cycle or not. It's not really important, that's not what Buddhism is about anyway.

I don't think his insight is pessimistic at all, unless you see sickness and death as things that can be averted. He is simply saying that with birth comes sickness and death. The Buddha taught that we should reflect on this (the Five Recollections), because it reminds us of the impermanence of our own existence. By reflecting on this, then we cease to cling. When we cease to cling, we can let go... and that is what brings about joy.

I concur. This venerable monk is just being very realistic, not pessimistic. He teaches the true Dhamma, not packaged up with sweet words. The Western person normally cannot accept these true words.

Believing in survival of consciousness is not a leap of faith. But not believing in it is. Its a violation of ones own direct and immediate experience. What leads you to believe that there is no consciousness after death other than your belief about it?Do u know for yourself that it is the case? Not only that, but disbelief in survival of consciousness is akin to not believing in cause-n-effect(btw by consciousness I am not meaning some ''soul''lifting off intact at death(as in Christian beliefs)
