It is worth noting that on flurry of blows, the attacks stack before applying resistance- the barbarian only gets it's resistance once against a flurry. Additionally, the animal barbarian does not resist bludgeoning. It might be more beneficial for the wolf monk to forego the worlf jaw for a regular fist attack.

Stand still adds a reaction attack when wolf drag hits, which is neat for the monk. There's so many extra variables to play with though, it would take forever to account for everything.

Great modelization of what would happen if you put them in a ring, But in open terrain, I'm picturing another scenario: The monk uses their speed advantage to stay out of reach for 1 minute ... rage ends, combat begins 😇

Very fun video showing how much you can focus builds around one or two feats and still have all your other feats to play around with. One note - Monks can get Critical Specialization from Brawling Focus at level 2, so they both could have the Stun from Crits as a confounding factor in the fight.

There are other ways for the monk to get an edge here. He can go super sayen with ki form (which also means he would get a level 1 ki spell like ki strike). One of his attacks always hits. He can get +4AC against one attack every turn with stance savant and prevailing advantage. He can fuse stances with a more defensive stance. Or reroll misses with impossible technique.

Important thing about Monk is that their feats offer greater breadth and versatility, as well as synergy. Here are some things to consider, I hope I didn't mess up anything: -Stunning Fist is free-ish, it doesn't compete too much with other feats - maybe only with Brawling Focus in Legacy, but it is better than it; it has an effect on any hit with any FoB, not just a critical ( but, well, only with FoB); In remaster CrtiSpec is free at 5 anyway, but in legacy you could pick both by 4th level -Stand Still is brutal if you knock the opponent prone -Qi spells exist, and as early as 1st level you can hit with Ki Strike / Inner Upheaval with additional non-physical dmg that triggers Stunning Fist; together with Overwhelming Breath it completely nullifies Barb's resistance -Qi Form passively improves all your attacks and deals damage each turn -You can consider One-Inch-Punch or Disruptive Qi for more power behind your most accurate attacks; doesn't trigger Stunning Fist though; OIP can be improved with One-Millimiter-Punch to push the opponent back, which makes him waste actions even on success; -Shattering Strike is another option for bypassing resistances, though it is rather costly -Diamond Fists work well with your standard 4-attack strategy -DEX monk with apex DEX item has +3AC advantage, -Built for Athletics even DEX Monk has easy time at Trip attempts, and STR Monk makes it unfair with up to around +7 advantage; Barb should probably invest in Canny Accumen for Reflex though anyway

Great Video as always! Fusing two classes together by taking an archetype will result in an Animal Barbarian with it's d12 unarmed attacks AND monks Flurry of Blows and One-inch Punch by level 12. That has the potential to be truly devastating.

@dedalesigma6755
@dedalesigma6755 Жыл бұрын
If we do pure DPR the champion wins. If we allow the cleric to burst through their ressources, the cleric wins cause 9 rounds of max level D10 two actions self-healing with haste and heroisme, is just too great an advantage for a one on one combat.

Interesting. I would love to see how the barbarian feat Reckless Abandon impacts things. +2 to hit for -2 AC. Is it a wash or does the more accurate big hits make it worth the tradeoff for the barb?
@dedalesigma6755
@dedalesigma6755 Жыл бұрын
If they don't cross the to crit threshold, it just 10% decrease for both round values, which does not change outcomes. But since the barbarian with a +2 attack still needs to roll a 20 to crit with and the feat lowers the barbarian AC to the point an 18 is a crit for the monk first attack, this feat would only be at the barbarian disadvantage. Though this feat is useful when fighting in a party who focuses fire, because in that situation damage now has more value than damage later.

Great video. Your analyses are always great to watch. One minor thing to consider is also the Stand Still feat which would give the monk a free extra attack using their reaction if the barbarian was getting back up from prone. That could swing things closer for the monk, but probably not enough to change the outcome.
@Solarraven7777
@Solarraven7777 Жыл бұрын
Also, the monk might be better off switching to normal unarmed attacks when the barbarian gets resistance to piercing. 1D6 without resistance would be better than 1D8 with.

I'm curious on something. How would the Monk fare if they possessed Flurry of Maneuvers, utilized that to trip the Barbarian instead of using Wolf Drag, and then opted to Step away from the Barbarian every round? It would seem consistent with the tactics and theme of a Wolf Monk.
@Lechteron
@Lechteron Жыл бұрын
Or run in, flurry of blows/maneuvers to trip and hit, and then run away again if the barbarian didn't take AoO at 6. The barb will need an action to stand and two to get to the monk who can now go even more ham. Most rounds the barbarian may not even get to attack if the monk plays it right.
@dedalesigma6755
@dedalesigma6755 Жыл бұрын
@@Lechteron This particular monk needs to be in melee as well to hit. And tactically a one hit per turn situation benefits the barbarian more as he doesn't get much DPR from his second and third attack. But at higher levels the monk could use his speed to deny the barbarian his rage bonus for one minute. And then fight him while fatigued.
@jimbob929
@jimbob929 Жыл бұрын
@@Lechteron The barb could take sudden charge though
@Kingneo0053
@Kingneo0053 Жыл бұрын
@@Lechteron In that case we could give them Guarded Movement. That would give them a +4 to their AC against reaction attacks. I'm not sure how that would affect the Barbarian's percentage to hit, but it would definitely screw with a Barbarian's typical style of play.

damn what a video, I caught myself rooting for the monk after a few minutes... guess I like an underdog history. Honestly, the Monk has some pretty great options there, Brawling Focus, Stunning Fist, Stand Still and Diamond Fists to get that juicy Forceful trait on someone attacking 3~4 times per turn... But on the other hand, this would be the perfect opportunity to the Barbarian to use Come and Get Me + Vengeful Strike, which would stack reaaally quick in favor of the Barbarian, and has a better action economy than Renewed Vigor. In the end, it really shows that inside the video there's two wolves fighting.

This was fun, but is also very much just a bad match up for the monk. As you mentioned, the Barbarian's resistance is the perfect defense against Flurry of Blows. But in actual gameplay, I think this actually shows pretty clearly that the monk is the better damage dealer while the barbarian is the better tank, at least against enemies that do a lot of little strikes.

On the number of rounds to defeat their opponent comparison, wouldn't a difference of a partial round be decided in favor of the class with higher initiative bonuses?
@dedalesigma6755

Well that would only matter for levels 1 to 4. After that both builds are gonna have the same initiative. Because barbarian only goes master at lvl 17 and that's the level the general feat canny acumen gives the monk master at perception.

Interesting video, but I don’t think you are properly accounting for the monk’s third action. A monk using flurry of blows gets two attacks with one action, leaving them with an additional action. A monk who successfully hits with Wolf Jaw could flurry and then strike a fourth time, or (my preference) simply step back. In response, the barbarian has to waste *two* actions the following round - one to stand up, and one to step into range. A barbarian who tried a similar defensive strategy would find themselves pummeled by a flurry of blows and a third attack even after the monk moved in.
