First and foremost I am a diehard monkey island fan, all of Lucas arts for that matter. Clearly inspiration was derived here for the pirates movies. A nod to the masterful tribute and the cherry on top is the uncontrollable smiling. Thank you for sharing. Keep trucking.

Fast forward to the late 90s and a script was written for a Monkey Island movie, which in turn was retooled into a pirates movie! So in a way, the first PotC is a Monkey Island movie.... (think about it, ghost pirates, a young and up and coming pirate [Will] and the crazy humour from the game with Jack, even the dog carrying the keys was directly ripped from the second game!)

Incorrect, Steven Spielberg was supposed to be the director. Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio however were hired to be the screenwriters for both films. Interestingly they were also the screenwriters for Shrek which shares Monkey Island's anarcho-pop humor.

Funny story actually. Monkey Island got its Inspiration from the original Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean Ride (1967) and in turn the Pirates of the Caribbean Movies got their Inspiration from the story of Monkey Island also heavily but not solely because of the director having previously worked on the cancelled Monkey Island Movie.
