You have a beautiful greenhouse and wonderful cacti collection. I was hoping if you can give me what your take on re-potting a root bound monkey tail during November? I'm not sure if it's currently in dormant period.
@cactusjoe Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Tes, very happy that you like the greenhouse and plant collection, much appreciated! If you are living on the northern hemisphere, i.e. it's Winter now where you are, then your Monkey Tail cactus should indeed be in dormancy now. Re-potting now should be ok, although if you can wait until February/March, that would be an even better time as the plant could then start with the growing season in Spring not too long after repotting. Not sure you have seen my video WHY I LIKE TO POT AND REPOT IN LATE WINTER, that might be of interest for you? Have a wonderful day!

I have a question about the monkey tail cactus 🌵 🙊 but first..Thank you for this wonderful cactus video, I did find in useful! I just purchased a larger specimen online. It came today and I have noticed what seems to be small amounts of a “white rash” looking spots on some of the stems. About a half an inch. I’m guessing it’s scales? Can I rub rubbing alcohol directly on the plant with a q tip? I do not want to wipe off the pretty hairs, but I also don’t want to leave it, then left with them sucking the stem to death. Haha thank you for your time and input. I’m a new sub 👍🏻
@cactusjoe10 ай бұрын
Hi, welcome to my channel, thanks so much for subscribing and many thanks also for watching and commenting, so happy you enjoyed the video!! Those white spots indeed sound like scale or perhaps also even mealy bugs! Yes, I always rub the q-tips with rubbing alcohol directly on the plant, but I use a mixture of rubbing alcohol and a small dash of detergent added. Best of luck treating those pests! And thanks once again! 🙏👍🙌😊🌵🪴🌸🌺💚😎☀️

I would love tips for growing lepisimum boliviarum, I can't seem to figure out the watering. 😅
@cactusjoe8 ай бұрын
Hi Meskarune! They are not too difficult to grow if one keeps in mind that they are a cactus that grows like an epiphytic orchid on trees, so not at all like a desert cactus. They do prefer a relatively cooler and dryer spot during the winter months. But in Summer I water mine once a week quite well - then allow the substrate to dry again before the next watering. They then also (in Summer) like a half sunny spot out in the garden or on a balcony, with exposure to rain and weather. Hope this helps, best of luck! 👍🙏😊🌿🪴🌵🌿🌺🌸🌼💚😎☀️

How do you get it to bloom?
@cactusjoe8 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for watching and for your question too! The most important thing really is that the plant gets a winter dormancy, which means that it should be kept in a relatively cool, but frost-free location, and virtually without any water, or just a few drops every couple of weeks. Check out my videos about winter dormancy for cacti, and why that is so important for their succesful cultivation, especially if one wants them to flower. Hope this helps, best of luck and happy growing!

Hi Joe! Thank you for this very helpful video. I just bought a small one that I plan on repotting in a more well-draining soil in a hanging basket in the spring. Do you know if I can keep this as an indoor plant? My plan was to put it in SW facing window (I'm in the US). But after watching this video, it seems like it's better suited for outdoors or in a greenhouse like yours.
@cactusjoe10 ай бұрын
Hi there! Thanks so much and fantastic to read that you found the video helpful! Actually this cactus can be grown both indoors as well as outdoors, as long as it get's plenty of light, so a few hours of sunshine and also good air movement, as it can be a bit sensitive to mites in stagnant air conditions. If you have the option, then a greenhouse is perfect! Have a wonderful weekend, best wishes and happy growing of course! 🙌👍🙏😊🌵🪴🌵🌸🌺💚😎☀️

Hi Alex, many thanks for watching and for your question. Good to hear that you have found the growing tips for the Monkey Tail Cactus useful. I use a standard, well-draining cactus soil mix, perhaps with just a little bit more sandy, loamy soil (no peat) added. At the base of the coco fiber basket I place a thin sheet of gardening fleece, to hold back the fine grained soil and cactus substrate from washing out. Hope this helps, best of luck and fun wirh your plant! 😉👍🙏🙏☺️🌵🪴🌵🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️🙋♂️

@cactusjoe2 жыл бұрын
Hey Cheryl, yes I think they come into flowering age from about 5-6 years total age onwards, so very soon if you've had it for 4 years now - depends of course also how old and large it already was when you got it. Best wishes for the wonderful blooms hopefully appearing for you very soon! Have a great day, and happy growing!

hi Joe i just got a few monkey tail cactus cuttings how long after planting do i wait to give some water , they have no roots yet thanks so much i am new to cactus
@cactusjoe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paula, thanks for watching and thanks for your excellent question 🌵🙂 If the cuttings are very fresh or have been taken max. in the last few days then I recommend keeping them away from any soil for now. And do not water at all yet, as they are still very prone to rot at this stage. Instead, take them out of the soil (and rinse it off the cuttings if required), allow them first to 'dry off' and heal in a dry and quite shady location, definitely keeping them out of any direct sunlight. It is important to wait for a week or two until a hardened coating (or callus) has developed along the cut end. Ideally, when the cuttings are fresh, dip them into a rooting powder for plant cuttings (available at most nurseries). Or, if that is unavailable, then fine charcoal dust or powder (e.g. found at the bottom of bbq charcoal bags) will do the trick too. If both unavailable, no big deal - as I say, just leave to dry and heal. Only once the cut ends have fully healed/dried (can take 1-2 weeks easily, but no problem, the cactus cuttings will survive this quite easily), only then place them on top of a very well draining, sandy / gritty cactus soil mix which is watered lightly once to twice a week. Keep the pot with the soil and cactus cuttings in a bright spot, but not in full sun. The first roots will then slowly start to develop about 2-3 weeks later, hopefully. Hope this all makes sense and helps. Best of luck with the cuttings and your new Monkey Tail Cactus plants, Paula! Thanks again for watching and commenting, take care, happy growing!! Cheers, Joe

Great video that covers all the details. Thanks for sharing. ❤ One question: Does the monkey tail has shallow root system? I wondering if my cone shape wall hanging planter is too small for 2-3 money tails. The depth of the planter is 15cm, and the top opening width is 12cm. From top to bottom planter gradually becomes pointy because it's a cone/triangle. Do you think if it’s workable for 2-3 monkey tails? Appreciate it
@cactusjoe Жыл бұрын
Hi Nika! Thanks for watching and I'm happy that you enjoyed the video and found it useful. Yes, the Monkey Tail Cactus indeed has a relatively shallow root system and it could work out in the planter that you describe, definitely worth trying. Just be aware that the plant, like so many other cacti, is quite sensitive to root rot, so would be important to have a drainage hole at the bottom of the planter...or, if it doesn't, then water very carefully and infrequently, and keep the plant in a very mineral-rich substrate so the roots can dry off quickly rather than stand in water-logged substrate for a long time. Best of luck and lot's of fun (and flowers!) with your Monkey Tail Cactus planter!
