Funny thing about free markets: the participants have to be free. Choice isn't possible when lies, threats, and coercion are leveraged against one party. Capitalism is why we're having what we're having in the first place. It always ends up with an oppressive corporate monopoly that squeezes all the money from customers to appease the insatiable appetite of shareholders. When maximizing profit is all you care about, it's inevitable.
@rugspiffy

@@kamchatmonk Respectfully, it appears you are conflating cronyism and oligarchic tendencies with free markets. Those are actually opposing principles. In free markets, once a business trespasses on the interests of their customers, the customers take their trust and money elsewhere, and if the business violates the liberties of another party, that party takes them to court. Currently, with all the customers abandoning DnDBeyond and blasting WotC/Hasbro online, and with other publishers and creators publicly announcing intent to litigate, the free market seems to still be working to some degree.

It's not under monetized. You have to pay for everything involved except for your own imagination in the playing of it. You know how much money people spend just on the minis for a SINGLE campaign? Not to mention anything you purchased on dndB isn't really yours. You don't own a copy of anything you payed for if they can choose to revoke or remove said materials. So your technically paying full purchase price for something that your really just borrowing and at any time WoC can just say fuck you we don't care that you payed money for it it's gone now, deal with it. You ask me I say D&D is monetized enough already for a game that is supposed to be 90 percent imagination.

I just learned about this from my friend yesterday. She had mentioned something similar but also stated that the new open gaming license with the fifth or possibly a new edition, if it was signed by creators, would revoke the ogl signed for previous editions. She had also mentioned that if you signed the new ogl, no only would you owe them a portion of profits you make, but if you piss them off for any reason they can cancel your contract and sell your product under their own brand. Apparently, revoking an open gaming license is illegal; it is said so by various lawyers, including the lawyer, who made the original open gaming license for the very first edition.

Also, I'm not sure how much of that is true. I am not really involved in d&d unless I see an interesting idea for a campaign, help her with campaign ideas if she is stuck, or she wants to talk about an ongoing campaign. There is likely more to what I had mentioned, but that is what I remember.

so for a while now I've been working on a little personal project and because that project I had a tab for DND Beyond's warlock Homebrew archetypes pages open in a background tab. and I hadn't looked at a couple weeks but last time I had checked there was about 140 pages of material. I checked last night and it was about 135. That means people are already pulling out, and I'm curious to see how far down this goes.

Amazing that two things. They actively have a game that teaches players to come together and rise up against a threat or evil bigger than themselves and are supposed when we do exactly that when they become said threat or evil And also That they have a game that actively has rules lawyers and are surprised that they got caught. Incredible
