IMO, if the twilight cleric is the only support character in the group, then it’s not toxic. It’s only toxic because it often invalidates support features from other characters. But I’ve got a twilight cleric in my campaign and my players have a good dynamic where they seem to consider the twilight cleric’s features as “our features” and it’s actually really fun for everyone if you have one super powerful support character. The only Person it’s unfun for is another support character who is being overshadowed

@Godzillawolf1

I think one way to bypass broken things is to give inuniverse and incharacter reasons to limit them until the other characters catch up. I'm playing an Aarakocra in my Dragonlance Campaign, but we gave her a character reason not to fly too often early on (she's a gravekeeper, a profession that requires her being on the ground and in caves a lot, and thus makes her uncanny valley to her species, so she covers her wings and rarely showed them). She never actually flew openly until level 4 despite us starting at level 1, and at present in the campaign, she's only spent one combat flying, and it was to do nothing a character couldn't have done by climbing around in the forest canopy (in fact our Arcane Fighter was also up there the entire combat). The agreement with the DM was that I don't use her flight openly until level 5, when the Fly spell would be available, which seemed fair as we're using post nerf Aarakocra. Not only did this keep her balanced, but it also resulted in her spreading her wings and flying openly for the first time a big moment.

last time I DM'd, I had 1 rule that was more important than the others, but it was fair for everyone. "we start at level 3". this way, you get what you need and what you've learned, and it's a nice way to get to level 5 in a few short quests and / or side quests. another rule was, if you're gonna bring snacks, make sure you bring enough for everyone else. most parties thought that was stupid, but others had fun with it, even putting it into the gameplay on our long/short rests. stay frosty!

I imagine incorporating the gun slinger would be something like this. (Name) is from the future and is a seasoned battle veteran. After hundreds of battles won, they grew bored. They tried giving themselves a handicap, but they would still get bored at some point. So they went to the past to see if they could take on prehistoric creatures, taking only 50 bullets and one shotgun shell in case of an emergency as their handicap. Running out of ammo would mean using alternatives, like pistol whips or making slings to be a sling slinger! Though, the cost of time travel was all their battle experience, they still have their memories of the strategies they used in battle. Something like that.

I feel like the most important thing said here is “we are all playing for fun, DM included” because I feel like that sentence is normally uttered when players are being unfair to each other or rules want to be “tweaked”. I feel like being a DM is weird. I haven’t DMed a lot but it feels like a group of friends looking at you and you having the task to provide for them, so to speak. This idea actually gave me the idea to include some stuff into my games where I myself are involved too. I’m still new to DMing and I find what I was doing fun but I feel like the gameplay was focused way more on the players than the DM and maybe instead on 90-10 I’ll split it 25-75 assuming I have however many players. The way my DM handles flying races is that until a certain level (For us level 3 but it’s up to your DM of course) the character is only allowed to use their wings for gliding, maybe helping them dodge an attack and controlling themselves if they fall. Until they reach the predetermined level they are to weak or in proficient with their wings yet to use them to fly completely. I think this works well for us at least, my friend who I got into dnd made an aarakocran beastmaster ranger and him having wings and being able to fly made certain situations more fun and a little easier to navigate. For example for the first 6 levels we played through “The dragon of ice spear peak”, and if you don’t know there’s a quest where your party must help another ranger by the name of Falcon out, and I’m not sure if this is how it’s supposed to be played or if it’s just how my DM did it but he had a small army of orcs attack Falcons fortress/lodge at night and while fighting them off our cleric came looking for us after leaving Phandalins bar (He missed the day we got the quest and being a partying drunk is apart of his character so it worked out). So while we were in the back of the lodge fighting off orcs he was in the front wondering why the front door was unlocked, he then gave my character a call on the sending stone my character gave him( I’m an artificer and we house ruled it so sending stones worked like phones) as we were talking he accidentally got the attention of the orcs on his side of the building so I send over my friends character to help him as he was the only one able to get to him quickly. He gets there to see 5ish maybe 6 orcs attacking our cleric and he then got the idea to try and scale the walls of the lodge to get him and the cleric to safely and a high vantage point for attacking the orcs, because we were only recently level 4 he still wasn’t strong enough with his wings (He could barely lift himself) so he helped the cleric climb up the walls by holding onto him and flying up as the cleric climbed the walls, they succeeded the orcs tried throwing their javelins and axes to no avail as the ranger and cleric sniped them from above. Over time he’s gotten not only better with his wings but also with his strength allowing him to carry one medium sized creature with him as he flies. Our party is now level 15 going on 16 and I have taken over DMing so I can run a campaign based around one of the other characters in our party the DM is playing my character and because my campaign is under water (The party member is an Atlantian Prince) my friends character can’t fly underwater but can use his wings to boost his movements like a dash or dodge action or just for some extra swing when he might want to stab something with an arrow. All in all that’s just how my group handles flying races and it’s why I was surprised to find they were banned in most peoples games, obviously every game is different and should be treated as such but if there’s someone who wants to use a flying race maybe this is how and maybe along with the designated level where they can start fully flying you can add a clause saying that they also have limited flying time like winged boots.

Gunslinger is a member of a party in the future that got flung back to prehistoric times after he and the wizard went on a bender. He uses his knowledge of fire arms to craft his own gunpowder and forges his own bullets and every bullet he uses is precious as it takes considerable resources to make and he uses a bow and arrow as a back up. I would probably rework several abilities to be stronger to compensate his lack of ammo. It would be hard to play and require a lot of scrounging for saltpeter, charcoal, and sulfur with successful nature checks. As well as the forging of the bullets. But if someone wants to play a time traveling cowboy that much I’d allow it.

Love it. I also like balanced customization. I let my players pretty much swap out or modify anything about their race, class, abilities, weapons, armor and spells as long as it's balanced against vanilla 5e. One of my favorites is a necromancer who turned Dragon's Breath into Breath of Decay which allowed himself or anyone he could touch to spew poison from their mouths and the poison effect could only work if they end their turn in the poison. He mostly used this and zombie grappling to have a low level version of Cloudkill. Pretty fun.

I hate it when dms ban stuff. I have literally never banned anything at my tables. I can work around it if it gets bad, but for the most part my players care more about big damage numbers than anything else so I anticipate nothing and am constantly disappointed nonetheless.

The biggest thing I have found about silvery barbs is that it takes away cool moments from the game. Crits are always cancelled out and they create scary moments if pcs are hit by one. Or if your pc crits and its cancelled by an enemy spellcaster that's a feelbad moment.

I FEEL that last bit about prehistoric games... My players wanted to be an artificer and a Vedalken respectively when I pitched the idea of a prehistoric campaign to them. I was kinda just dumbfounded by their choices, and had to work with them both one on one to get ideas that were more setting friendly.

So much for my Owlin Divination Wizard, though one house rule i use for flying characters is that they can fly, but until 3rd or 5th level (depending on campaign lethality) they have to land at the end of their turn or fall due to their wings not having built up the necessary strength

Another way my friends and I do it cause we enjoy high power shenanigans is we make everyone roll a set of 4d6 keep highest 3, until we have 6 rolls. Then we add those all up and make that the point pool where the players can allocate them however they want with the restrictions of no stat can be over 20 and none can be under a 3. Seeing the various min/maxed builds is p funny and how some people finagle some stuff.

I do have a human gunslinger. His backstory is that the world in the future has no more resources and people live in giant oxygen bubbles until they learned how to time travel. His original mission was to travel back into the past to collect resources and establish a gateway back into the future so that his time line could harvest the materials of the past. If you watched a show called Terra nova then that's the idea I used for this character lol

My favourite way to determine stats for a group is still to have everyone roll for a full block (4d6, drop low, reroll1's), then everyone can choose from any of the rolled blocks. If someone has a 17 or 18, they might get chosen by a few people, but if someone has like four 14-16's, that also draws everyone in lol

A really good example of a gunslinger fitting into a medieval-ish setting is the glass cannon podcasts run of pathfinders gaintslayer. One of the characters is a dwarf gunslinger inquisitor who, after his whole clan got wiped out by a organized clan of giants, was found by another dwarf couple who where only there to plunder what his late parents had left him. GUN!but they decide to take the baby, and He grows up not knowing his true heritage until one day he decides to run from home, drugging his adoptive parents and stealing GUN on his way out.

I’d say allow flying races, but if a player wants to be a flying race they have to either A. Work for it: Say for example, a winged Tiefling looses their wings in a battle, and as a result has to find a way to restore them, so they take up the path of a cleric for a few levels till they unlock healing magic powerful enough to restore their wings. Or B. Give something up: maybe something like having less points to spend with point buy, or loosing other features from their race.

Just thought of this on the spot. Flight exhaustion, Flying races start with two empty points by default. taking an action to start Flying and that takes one point of FE,(Flight exhaustion) leaving one point left to spend elsewhere, and it can be linked to one of you're physical Stats say dex. And every time it's Increased by 3 you getand extra EP can go to 2 to 3 to a max of 5. And when you spend all you have to land and left vulnerable, and if you're still in the air you fall and take fall damage. Once you land it takes 2 turn for one point of FE to decrease and you can only start to fly again once all EP is gone Could have probably worded this better

I do a couple weird things with my player’s character creation. I pretty much let them do stats however they want, whatever way they wanna do them, hell if they want to use a really high standard array I have they can. To me, no one is overpowered if everyone is. Secondly, I do this fun little thing I call “character quirks”, where each player has the OPTION to basically make a custom level 1 feat that has a backdraw of equal or greater magnitude than the bonus, like dealing more fire damage but being weak to cold damage. The character quirks tend to be related to the character’s personality, goals, backstory, all that, so the quirks allow the characters to feel way more personal and unique to my players, a character with nothing but the quirk changed could play completely differently

I used a fixed array - 16, 15, 14, 12, 10, 8. Can trade up to 2 points around, such as having two 10's (2 points taken from 12), but also two 16's (2 points added on 14). Maximum of 17. Minimum of 7. (At base - before any source of ASI) And, free level 1 feat within reason, such as not going GWM PAM etc. Something flavorful like Chef or Telekinetic that you wouldn't otherwise use a limited opportunity for.

On my campaigns, I like giving more stuff to make them feel powerful, so I give two ASI as a bonus, one at 1st and another at 4th level, use standard array and can't start with more than an 18 on a score. Either way, it's two more feats or +4 bonus at 4th level, an option that I find better than other character creation options (builds with feats get online earlier without stagnating scores)

I do everyone starts at level 3. They get to choose one uncommon item or 2 common items of their choosing. Any. And yes, including whatever you're thinking of, as long as it's official content. We do a 1d20 roll for stats with no reroll. Homebrew is encouraged as is any homebrew that isn't broken and I okayed. And if it's something from another time period, I just have them make a backstory where they got sucked into a portal or wormhole or whatever and they landed here in this universe. Bag of holding is actually my most banned item. My players have been really good at exploiting it. Or making it explode with another bag of holding.

You mentioned point buy and I know another cool way to have balanced, but fun stats. I joined a dnd group a short while ago, and my dungeonmaster told me of a houserule he had. In his campagnes, the players don’t roll for stats, and they don’t use point buy, instead they roll a number of sets with stats. So if you’re done, you have like ten sets, and every set has six numbers. And you choose the best one. This makes sure, the game is balanced but not boring. I wasn’t familiar with this way of rolling stats before, but it works really well. I like your videos, bye

I mean I don’t get the issue, you give up so much for the feat. Like lizardmen get a really good unarmored defense buff, halflings get immunity to rolling ones, half orcs get to crit crittier. All things that I would say are balanced as a feat. Humans just give you choice

If my players are rolling for stats, what I’ve done is they all roll one part of a stat array that they all use. This works better if you have 6 players, but you can just have some people roll multiple times. Or you can have each player roll a full stat array and the party uses that instead. You still get the fun of rolling for stats and your party has the same starting point.

I have to agree with you. When I setup an Earthdawn game, I have a set of House Rules that I give to all the players and one of the rules involves second classes (disciplines). A character begins with 1 class and there are rules for learning a second class, and even a third. However, the Game Master has the right to disallow certain combinations that would be unrealistic power building. As an example, a warrior gains the most durability in the game. It makes sense, they are the tanks. So why would a player decide after 1 or 2 levels, to suddenly become a magic user? Well now they have access to magic spells and still retain the high hit point level of the warrior. As a GM, you better have a really good logical reason why you would need to suddenly take up spellcasting when melee has been your life up to this point. The main difference between Warriors and Swordmasters is finesse. A Warrior is all about efficiently killing his opponent. A Swordmaster is all about defeating his opponent with style. If it can't be done with flare, there's no point in doing it at all. For that reason, Warriors in my game can't under any circumstances take up the Swordmaster discipline or vice versa, just so they can get Taunt and Riposte to add to their repertoire; (or Acrobatic strike, Gliding stride and Downstike by becoming a Warrior).
