I was a bit skeptical of mother encore, largely because of how the art style looked almost copy-pasted from other mother fangames and motherlikes, which themselves basically copy-paste the style of Mother 3. But playing the demo made me really look forward to it. It's very clear that there's a lot of heart going into it they have a very good vision on what to make of Mother 1. I think they're really going the extra mile with it

People often say this as a kneejerk response, and I don’t agree. An unnecessary remake, a contrived sequel, etc. don’t make the original "disappear,” but they change the original’s place in the cultural Zeitgeist. When a KZbinr talks about Shodow of the Colossus, chances are they're using the inferior-looking remake. Dark Souls was an obvious stand-alone game with a concise, digestible narrative that had a meaning, yet your average layman will view it as a part of a trilogy and not its own work. We live in a time where half the media we consume is just a botched rebrand of our nostalgia or someone else's; the fewer remakes we get, the better.

With exceptions like great channels like this one (who will still always hold the original 3 games to high regard with attention heavily placed on them), nobody talks about earthbound unless they are complaining about ness players spamming pk fire in smash bros. We live in a post undertale world, which is a game that has heavy inspirations from earthbound and is insanely popular. The only way to capture even a small part of that culture is to have a modernised remake or a new game (unlikely). You can release a remake and it does a great job of modernising the franchise, or it might not, but either way it's not like it would damage any existing relevance or high regard the games have currently, it doesn't really exist.

The Mother Trilogy could need a bundled release with nice quality of life adjustments and slight changes to make the experience more seamless. The pixel art and sound is beautiful as is, so there really is no real need to make a classical Remake. On the other hand... ...a Reimagination? I'd sign up for that. Switch the genre, change the perspective. Maybe add puzzles, jump& run and introduce some ideas which Paper Mario had. I like what Earthbound Dimensions does.

I'm of the mindset that, since the original is now (finally) easily available (officially), I'd be cool with them making fairly major changes with the remake to give it a different experience... I’ve been following Mother fan projects since the late 00s and they almost always fizzle out.

I think earthbound does need a remake, for the sole reason that even if the game can be accessed fairly easily now, its gameplay can be a little off putting to newer generations of players. That's not really a problem in itself, but i think there's value in readapting the game to smooth out a few of its jagged edges (such as the menu and storage system which is widely complained about) and maybe even providing some versatility and replay value to long-time fans with maybe a hard mode, new areas, new items and rewards and stuff like that. Tbh, the only aspect of remaking i'm still skeptic about is the graphics. Even though the original graphics do look really outdated even for their time, i think the simplified pixel art is part of why the atmosphere build up works so well, it leaves a lot to the player's imagination to fill out the details. The clay visuals would work and they'd be faithful, but i also think they'd rob the game of some of its more serious tones, as it would make it seem a lot more playful

The biggest problem with remakes is how they severely muddy a game's identity, especially now. They tend to be done in such a way that they aim to overwrite the originals and along the way they remove everything unique about them in order to appeal to modern players. Originals become looked back on as an outdated mess that are better off being left behind. A lot of times they're made by people who think they know better than the original team and wind up dropping entire artistic choices just to be more appealing to everyone. I saw a lot of people looking back on Persona 3 with disdain in light of this remake because it has the fatigue system and uncontrollable party, which weren't archaic hindrances due to technological limitations but actual choice the director made for the sake of immersion. It was that game's identity. Now people feel like the choice is down to "that janky archaic crap" or "this NEW version with ENHANCED EVERYTHING". It's a mess right now, and it seems to be happening with Silent Hill 2, the attitude that we no longer need the original anymore because now we have a BETTER and NEW MODERN version. It doesn't help that original is still mostly unavailable but, honestly, even if it was it still wouldn't be seen too fondly because all this remaking and demanding of remakes has only harboured this mindset I've been talking about. Basically, no, Earthbound should not be remade. That game IS its limitations, the simple aesthetic, poor difficulty scaling at the start, cumbersome interruptions and cut content. Remaking it with enhanced visuals, smoother combat, quality of life changes, and whatever else these remakes leave behind will only hinder its legacy as an outstanding and unique piece of art. Games are also just less interesting when they're designed to appeal to everyone, which is exactly what a remake would aim to do

It sounded like if that were to happen, Nintendo would ask him for permission, he'd say yes, then wouldn't have any more involvement. I imagine the same would be the case for a 2 remake as well. So long as Itoi doesn't have to do any work besides saying yes, he'll let Nintendo do what they want.

While I think we should wait until it releases, I would honestly say that Mother 2 Deluxe (version 3.0) will basically be the EarthBound remake you've described. Development is going pretty well and it's looking to fix most of the problems listed here, and expand EarthBound into something new but familiar. I don't think it should be everyone's first EB experience, but I hope it reaches a wide enough audience and doesn't remain obscure.

I think if earthbound gets a switch game it should be remade from the ground up. Because the aspects of the super famicon version and its “limitations” wouldn’t really fit well with a graphical overhaul only, like if it released as basically an rtx version of earthbound, it would be strange the fact of the matter is that earthbound had a large focus on what worked on an snes, so if they retool it from the ground up it could be tailored to fit to the switch to keep the emotional conection (Sidenote, giygas… . . Wouldn’t work on the.. switch. . . Because the red static .. . . WHY WOULD THERE BE STATIC ON A SWITCH IN PORTABLE MODE??)

(I haven’t watched the whole video so I’m not sure if this has been mentioned) Me personally I’d like an earthbound remake along the lines of the link’s awakening remake or (more recently) echoes of wisdom. I think you could still have the battles include the usual funky backgrounds while still having the 3d toylike effect on the enemies (kinda like the 3d clay renders from the promotional art)

In the way of fan games… Mother: Cognitive Dissonance exists as an RPG Maker game, following a mook through the events of Mother 1 and 2. I’m pretty sure it’s like, one of the ONLY completed fangames that exists? It’s really good, and (personally), I think it captures what makes EB so beloved for me. I think EB is one of those games that has both a lot to gain and a lot to lose in a remake. The game leans heavily on its specific charms and atmosphere which could easily be lost if you try to recreate it but at the same time theres a lot of 90s jank that would be great to have cleaned up. Stuff like having to open the menus, selecting a key and then selecting use instead of the gate just opening once you have it for example. Or that the condiments are useless because of how bad the inventory is. That the rolling HP thing isn't useful until you're near the end of the game. The way it lags with only a handful of enemies on screen despite other SNES games doing more intensive stuff at full speed

OK, hear me out. What if they did a remake with the philosophy of Octopath Traveler's style? Octopath is meant tonllok like old RPGs with a lot of enhancements made with things like more complex art, flashy effects, and good ol' 3D graphics. With Earthbound, they could do something similar, but obviously in the more cartoony style the game is known for. The art can be updated just by having bigger spritework more in line with modern indie RPGs. The effects I think should carry a more cheesy 80's/90's VFX look. I love the idea of the clay model style though. I also a more 2D Animated kinda like Omori would look cool if you want to be a bit more faithful.

if any game needs a remake, it's mother 3. pack the other two in with it, and suddenly the whole series is available, any offensive stuff removed, and all possible PR issues sorted.

I’m all for a remake of Earthbound/Mother 2 but add in more enemy character animations and pictures of the weapons and armor and items in the game instead of just boring text and stats.

An earthbound remake would be nice, but we do not NEED one. An Earthbound Beginnings/ Mother remake would be much more ideal.

tbh Earthbound origins (Mother 1) deserves more the remake than mother 2. Mother 2 has aged very well; the gameplay overall is not feeling "unbalanced", i mean, maybe the beggining before fighting Franky you may need to level up some levels before facing him, but only applies to him. On the other hand with Mother 1, for every new "enemy" you need to an insane amount of grinding so even normal "enemies" do not kill you that easily

I think, instead of EarthBound it should be EarthBrown, where all of the Earth is brown and all of the people are brown and it's all brown, just like the color brown.

I'm definitely happy we ended up with the GBA Mother 3. It's aged far better than any N64 game would have.
