This guy looks a dozen times better and a hundred times more knowledgeable than most of the Mantis instructors I've met.

Interesting to see two different body types practicing the mantis…like the twelve Chinese star signs animal signs with their characters and their elements…or just how the elements are practicing the Art!

I Iove the Mantis style, fast, effective and tenacious! I teach the Cheng Chi Style straight out of Taiwan half internal half external, I'm very fortunate to have been taught such an awesome mantis/golden eagle style and I get to pass it on, Keep training!!!

Aprox 20 years. The Cheng Chi System is a 10 year system, Golden Eagle style (Taiwan's representative style) which includes lots of sixth harmony mantis, 7 star mantis, golden eagle, monkey tiger, iron palm etc, half internal/external. I have a little dojo in Lompoc California USA. Have 2-3 main solid students. I'm 6'4 208lbs with long limbs so I'm actually able to pull of lots of the Mantis techniques in hard sparring. We love to train and 1x a week really spar as hard and as real as possible, but it is difficult because lots of the techniques involve leg/knee distruction and iron palm strikes. Keep training, keep sweating and enjoy the physical experience!

I think this is the only kung fu channel representing Northern Mantis in it's authentic state. Everywhere else I look is showing the imitative show style, which understandably gives the wrong impression.

Wonderful demo and technique sharing. The hooks you discuss, wouldn't they be more useful against grappling situations as in real time versus a snapping technique would leave you flat footed and slightly vulnerable. Would make sense for grappling scenarios... And would you say the stances being used favour the use of kicks below the waist for a less telegraphed and harder to react to kick. Noted rapid hand speed and breaking of angles but noted a degree of readjust required when demoing...is there much 2 man drills?

Yea definitely used a lot in grappling, Brendan had just picked a few things to show. And yes Mantis doesn’t usually do high kicks

Well done Brendan, good advice about the different ways of attacking not just straightforward. Also, about being able to fight on both sides. The form you were doing looks like Tai Chi Mantis. Is that right? 😔

Would be interested in seeing this in a fight or sparring but not against similar practitioner but like a boxer, kickboxer / Muay Thai or MMA. I mean that’s what you’ll probably come against so why not.

I would say it depends on the person. I say that because techniques are pretty universal, the body can only move so many different ways. And also, you never fight someone at their own game. For example, in Choy Li Fut it's a running joke that if you're up against a boxer, don't use your hands, hit him with a chair.

@@blockmasterscott Yeah, I once heard Bruce Lee say the only fighter he would not like to fight is a Choy Li Fut fighter.

@@Andrew-qy1kz I read many many years ago an article written by one of Bruce Lees training partners (not one of his students) in Seattle in the 1960's. Bruce Lee told him that a fighter that really gave him a large amount of problems was a Choy Le Fut fighter. He thought they were fast, came out swinging and were unpredictable but in a controlled way, overall a very dangerous street fighter.
