Interesting how the forms look so different from the southern styles but in application they are broadly the same 武林一家. Thanks for sharing as ever

As for southern mantis, which has no link to northern mantis, the applications look quite different!

I've really been enjoying your Northern Mantis videos recently. I'm getting ready to start learning Seven Star Praying Mantis. My main art right now is judo. I don't think I'll be able to make any of the Mantis stuff be practical/applicable in hard sparring or fighting but I'm hoping the forms and drills help me develop better coordination and footwork. Thanks for making such great content.

Loved it. Hope there's a Part 3 ,4.... For a guy who doesn't place a huge influence on forms practice Brendan certainly does a decent 'imitation' 🙂👍 great channel. Great vids Will

Oh hey, I’ve been training similar mantis moves lately. These concepts will come in handy. Thanks. In my experience, the big ramming move at the beginning works better off a clinch. As in: under carry (from the clinch) to flank followed by the ramming throw. That way you’re moving into a large motion from a closer more contracted position instead of advertising from a mile away. Big to small, small to big. Good stuff, though. More please.

It's interesting to me how you translate classic mantis technique with a mesh of modern grappling technique. So essentially making the style applicable to actual self defense.
@MonkeyStealsPeach3 жыл бұрын
Its not modern or translated, this is how Mantis has always been applied in Shandong

@@MonkeyStealsPeach Just to clarify that was meant as a compliment not as an insult. Classic kung fu is rarely taught in modern society because the general opinion is that the styles have no application to actual street fighting. Not saying this is MY opinion, just that it is the general one. I am a security manager for a living and LOVE kung fu, always have since I was a kid, (which is one of the reasons I subscribed to your channel). When I train a lot of my bouncers, I always use elements of kung fu in my training. Although in our profession, basic grappling techniques tend to be the most effective in regard to subduing an unruly patron without using actual violence. I enjoyed this very much. Just wanted to make that clarification.
@MonkeyStealsPeach3 жыл бұрын
No worries man, didn’t take it as an insult. Was just pointing out that this is just classical mantis in application. Any teacher in Shandong would show you similar stuff

I was taught that if the opponent grabs they creat a connection or bridge. Immediately attack above or below the bridge hand. I would not pull back but relax the arm and snap down then attack the shin or knee , or circle

Hopefully you can go to New York and interview this guy kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKmlo5WiaLWrm8U Sifu Carl Albright the 7 Star Grandmaster, if you have the time just look at it especially from around 30 min but he starts with the basics at the beginning so it is better watching the whole thing. He does answer your question though about the mantis hook and other things. I also loved the video you did with your teacher now that man was AWESOME.

How is this going to work in a real fight where you actually have a realistic gap which you have to close before you even reach the opponent?! (Not least s/he will be trying to maintain that gap from you!) Btw, I’m not trolling.. i practise a traditional Chinese art as well. :)

Jabs, fients, stick and cling, until the moment presents to triple pick, then once that provokes a reaction, follow thru...
