@JeffreyBrandtLaw2 жыл бұрын
@@adamdvorak3735 Almost entirely. The first "e" is lower case, but the second "e" isn't, so it's not clear. It could be a metaphor: the killer created an unknown - is the "i" upper case or lower? Similarly, he found the glasses, resolving the inconsistency of the alibi and of how the murder happened, but he did not fully answer the question of who killed her. This episode from the 2nd season remains one of my absolute favorite. A creative murder, and one that the audience has a chance to solve. An excellent villain (always liked Andrew McCarthy). And last but not least, a bit more of Trudy's backstory and a very touching Trudy moment. But, here's my one nitpick: No science teacher would use the word "theory" the way Philby did. He'd instead call it a hypothesis. To him, a theory is a well-substantiated and repeatably testable explanation about the physical world.
@Dreamline784 жыл бұрын
@CommandoDude I'm a science layman but I know what a theory is in the scientific context. I would think most people with at least some college education would be exposed to the word's proper usage as well. But yeah, I probably do expect a bit too much from Hollywood writers (no sarcasm here).

One of my favorite episodes my only issue is that he fell for the bait. The episode made it clear that this was one of the rare occasions where the culprit was smarter than monk, outwitting him at every turn. So why did he fall for the bait? Monk already made it clear in the episode that he suspected him and always spoke to him openly as the culprit but here Monk's speaking as if it's a secret all of a sudden. And just casually dropping private case information as if he was his friend instead of the suspect. Why would the man trying to prove you wrong knowingly give you information that would benefit you? Clearly this is a trap. So why did he bite the bait? Although I guess I can understand. When you're sole priority is covering up traces than any uncertainty in the slightest will eat you up inside. So if he absolutely had to check then he shouldn't have rushed in and should have seen the trap for what it was and play his next move with caution. He could've bribed a janitor to go retrieve them or throw them away and if he's caught there's nothing out of the ordinary because he is just doing his job. Just my thoughts

1:20 They messed up a very important part of Monk's urges. The word he fixes is written as "ReMINDER!" Monk fixes it by dottign the i to "ReMiNDER!" Monk is stuck on perfection unless there is a pattern, patterns take priority. He would have changed it to "ReMiNdEr!" However the other words are all written in lower case except the first letter of each word which are written in upper case. Due to this he would have just been compelled to rewrite the word as "Reminder!". This means that changing the word to "ReMiNDER!" like he did in the scene would have been completely impossible for him to walk away and leave it like that. He would have to look at it and then erase the whole word and fix it because it wouldn't look correct to him. And if you hit Read More and read all the way down here, here is a continuity error as a treat. At 1:24 after Monk leaves the word "ReMINDER!" is just like it was prior to Monk fixing it because they filmed this part of the scene first for some reason.

I love how monk dotted the i in “ reminder” but not on “quiz”

The REMINDER immediately bothers me because he turned it into a lower-case i, the only one lol

By the way, that un-dotted (i) goes back to being un-dotted, When Monk Leaves the Room.

Columbo (Swan Song) used the same method to flush out the murderer; say they were going to search the area for an item of evidence to force the killer to go and recover it

There's just one problem. There is no way that clock hand would have supported the entire weight of an adult woman. A clock mechanism is just not designed to bear that much additional weight because it doesn't need to. Not even on a clock tower.

"A theory is just that unless you have some proof". In real life I'd be really worried to hear a science teacher say that. A theory is a theory BECAUSE it has gathered a vast amount of evidence and has been rigorously tested.

It is hard to be that precise unless you hire someone with a personality like Monk. Well... Let's just say that no one in the film crew gonna like it.
@lEGOBOT25654 жыл бұрын
Actually: "sic probatur" is "Thus it is proved" in Latin. "Quod Erat Demonstratum" (no second n) is Latin for "It was demonstrated", which is another way of saying "Thus it is proved". Now, you are correct in that, when you take "It was demonstrated" and translate it into Latin, you get; "Quod erat demonstrandum", but when you translate that back, you get "It can be shown", and when you translate that again, you get "Ostensum est quod esse potest", and back to English you get "It has been shown that it can be", then to Latin; "Iam ostensum est quod esse non potest", English; "Have shown that there can be no", which where the trail ends In summary: Shut the fuck up

There's a saying that goes 'dot the i' s and cross the t's' it pretty much means to pay attention to details so I think he was subtly hinting that the guy forgot that the woman wears glasses when he killed her so he left evidence at the scene of the crime which is what got him caught. That's how I interpret it anyway
