Not bad. Above average even! But if you want to truly be great, maybe even the greatest, you’ll need to tweak some things. 1. Splash White, Blue, Red, and Green. You’ll have access to all the best cards in the format. Duh. 2. Those are rookie numbers. We’re gonna pump you up to 130 cards, can’t afford to lose to Ruin Crab. 3. Jin-Gitaxias. Extra points if this is the only mono-blue card in the deck, for the covertness. 4. Prismatic Bridge. Hands-down the best card in standard, and basically all of magic second only to Saddleback Lagac. 5. Win. 6. Recite the sacred hymns: “Saddleback Lagac is back Tap some lands put him on the stack Wait a turn, use him to attack Later get tired, gonna hit the sack Dream of our good friend, that sweet Saddleback”

I’ve been trying to make monoblack zombies work for a long time- invoke despair is genius. Graf reaver is insanely underrated. Nice work CGB, you’re a streamer of the people.

I love mono black but every time I look at Graf reaver against other 2 drops I get a little mad. When you compare it to other 2 drops around it just stands out as being basically a vanilla 3/3 that hurts you every round while other colors get 3/3 pumpables that can draw you cards or 3/2 that messes with graveyards and can become semi-unblockable or a 1/1 that hands out +1/+1 counters like candy or a 2/1 first strike that taxes things. For 2 mana creatures in a mono colored aggro setting I would take Thalia, Luminarch, Packleader, Sentinel, and Kargan Intimidator over Graf. Basically every color but blue has a better aggro 2 drop. That is sad to me. Nobody sees a Graf reaver hit the board and immediately is looking for ways to kill it right now like most of the others are.

I ran this deck for 6 games in play queue (6-0) and 20 games in Standard ladder - plat 4 to plat 2 - 14-6 (70%). As for testing what kinds of decks it faced they were all meta decks (Mono white the most, GW Enchantments and Rakdos Sac next, Control in the forms of mono-black, Orzhov, Hinata, Esper, Azorious), mono-green, mono-red (most off-meta) and Izzet. So the deck holds up well and if you want to run something that is not the same old but still climb some I think it can do it. Graf Reaver is solid and good in aggro matchups too (I did drop one for 1 infernal grasp), about halfway through the games I dropped the Dracolich for an extra Meat Hook. The extra Meat Hook really helped me feel better in the Control and Rakdos Sac matchups. Rakdos Sac seems the hardest and really comes down to who gets the last Meathook on the board.

I'm curious about how the algorithm works considering you still had 27 rares in your deck and are high mythic, you would think it would match you against the best of the best still. Would be interesting to see what it matched you against if you added a few more rares even with a non-standard deck... Maybe as a test add like 50 more rares, 4 more colours and include the Prismatic Bridge and Jin-Gitaxias, would be interesting to see whether it matched you up against popular content makers or something.

A really fun way to play zombies is to do a black blue snow exploit focused deck with some decaying tokens and Narfi. It can really mess with an opponents entire board from their hand to the field to the graveyard.

This video was just in time, because I drew the black challenge today. I only have 2x Graf Reaver so I am going to try Headless Rider as a substitute. The ability to manipulate the match maker would make a great series of videos. There is a Mono-White Aggro Deck with 2.8K plays per week that uses Guiding Voice & Homestead courage with a 56% win rate. The deck is cheap to play with only 14 rares, and the sideboard only contains 3 lessons skipping the normal rare lessons! The Orzhov or Mono Black Control decks should just farm this deck, but I suspect it gets more favorable matchups with the low rare count.

You are right about the match ups based on deck performance. Its weird that my green/ black elf deathtouch and dimir exploit deck with snowlands get thrown against top tier orzov and pure planeswalker decks. While green white monk deck get weird decks. 💘 your content.

I use a deck similar to this. Expect I lean into ghoulish procession and 8 instants that can sacrifice to draw cards. Meathook+ constant decayed tokens is very fun.

Hey CGB! I've been messing around with zombies this week too. They definitely seem to crack the algorithm and pair with lower tier decks. I found that a splash of blue to add Kaito and swap Reaver for the lord was a good upgrade. Also, Crippling Fear won me a ton of games. Especially against mono white. You're cool!

I play zombies in alchemy, the hobbling zombie got a buff in alchemy making it a 2 mana deathtouch that makes a decayed token when it dies is nice. Like you said deathtouch is very good right now, didn't use fell stinger before but it looks good. Why didn't you use headless rider or wight ? I like wight more than Graff Reaver.

Hello kind CGB, I see we are close to reach 150k Subs, what about a new Jank Week for that milestone of Subscribers? There is a pretty interesting idea I have, not only including Jin-Gitaxias, but also a true Horror Show of Confidence and Pain for your only true Enemy: Aggro Decks. Alas, there might be some Lost Souls on the other Side. The Side that is opposite. The Opponent. Which might be running Mill, Tashas Hideous Laughter, will you really not be prepared for that? What about Control decks? There have to be four Copies of Test of Talents. I don't see another way adding fewer Cards when running Prismatic Bridge. You must have trust in the Shuffler and the Heart of Cards. Try a 150 Card Prismatic Bridge Pile for Sanity reasons.

It blows my mind that they insist in meddling with games via the matchmaker and/or the smoothing algorithm. Magic is(and always was) about minimizing odds of negative RNG, while trying to see what neat interactions you could pull off. Any third party interference/influence that manipulates the game to have a x or y game state based off prebaked perimeters set by a "smoothing algorithm" or a "Matchmaker" inherently changes the game fundamentally. This is what leads to MTG:Arena being pushed more and more in the direction of meta decks and the fear of experimentation. Part of the fun for old farts that were around when this game originated, was knowing that it was just your deck vs your opponents deck. Your idea's vs theirs with just the luck of the draw to consider. You rarely knew exactly what was coming at you, but the "game to game" experience was usually more varied and at least you knew there wasn't some third party influencing your game (not including cheating). Also, getting pissed at your asshole friend who would always play land destruction decks. I'm looking at you Josh....you dick.

22:44 seems like a super strong archetype that's replacing mono W as the main Tyrant of the meta. You were really lucky your opponent was missing some (50ish?) cards that are important to Progress early game and Bridge the midgame with the lategame for their deck to be Compleated. You should play it.

I swear by the same conspiracy of 'bad deck' = good match-ups. That's why I always try to budget at least 4 uncommon cards or more in my decks. That seems to work for avoiding the tier 1 meta which is a more fun playing experience for a casual like me lol ^_^

as much as a i love mono black zombies, I still think rakdos zombies is better. if you've ever tried it mardu zombies is also pretty good, and if you have ever tried mardu with blue it also grants you access to jin gitaxis. Not only that but running green also gives you access to prismatic bridge, and if you add 70 more cards then you have a competitive mono black zombie deck!

I've been playing a similar deck a lot and I think it's kind of... bad. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with it but it feels neither aggressive enough to close out games quickly nor able to properly answer late game threats. Especially against the million lifegain decks out there. And I don't have the wildcards to craft Invoke Despairs or more than one Meathook Massacre to get the deck to finish out games quicker either. I guess I shoudn't have brewed a deck based on aesthetics alone lol feelsbadman Also, why no Headless Rider or Archghoul of Thraben with this deck? The rider a great precaution against boardwipes, so to speak. And Archghoul of Thraben is good for card advantage.

@@Mortonbmx I made a flying zombies deck in historic. It's a very fun deck to play. Using the old lord that you can pay to give everything menace. Along with the newer zombies. Headless rider makes it a very resilient deck. Had a game against a friend he board wiped leaving me with 4 triggers on horseman. Drew the blue card that gave them all flying amazing win 😂

A matchmaking system other than by rank has no place in ranked. Ranked is the competitive forum for play. If you show up to live competitive tournaments with jank you will not be playing against other jank. You will be facing people playing the most competitive winning decks and you will be lucky to win 20%. Play queue is where it is fine to have some form of matchmaking algorithm based on deck configuration.

I cannot figure out for the life of me how to build a deck. Do you have to just buy infinite amounts of booster packs in order to get all the cards you want? Or can you buy individual cards?

Seems to be a flaw in the "stats are nonsense" logic - if what you want is a deck with a high arena win rate then getting match made with softball decks is a bonus right? So although the win percentage may not be a true reflection of how good the deck is, it may well be a true reflection of how well it performs in real world conditions on arena.
