I like to switch back and forth between mono and stereo mixing. I'll make it sound good in stereo then check the mix in mono and make adjustments, so it sounds good on both.

@Oliseh Azuya it also depends on the mix for me. Sometimes I can’t get it to sound good in stereo, so I’ll start the mix in mono. After that, I might add stereo widening if it isn’t wide enough or just some reverb to give it space. I like to use ozone 9 imager if the mix isn’t wide enough.

It's good to check in mono yes, but once you're confident in mixing you'll end up putting the low end stuff in mono anyway and only spreading some higher frequencies. Mid/side mixing is also excellent for controlling the sides especially 👌🏿 great video as usual 💯

Hello thier Sage Audio!, I like to put recording into My DAW in 3 sections - ¹vocals - ²percussion & ³winds however I have yet to learn - seriously learn how to or when to record in STEREO or MONO ? ! ! Exa: friends that have there home studio 🎙 say: they record all vocals (Mono) & WITHOUT ANY REVERB BUT I feel REVERB helps out vocal artists so the don't strain. However is a vocal to be kept mono and add efx or stereo and not too much efx? ² I have no idea if to record percussion instruments in stereo exa: timbales and Congas etc etc ... aaand the same for winds such as trumpets , trombone etc etc. Sir... what am I missing in basic 101 terms here? 😕 thanks for your Guidance and suggestions 🙏.

Well it depends. It is advised to record pre fader but send the vocalist the mix post fader. That way you are recording a dry signal but the vocalist receives a wet signal in there cans. So they hear reverb but you are recording them dry. The Advantage to this is that you are not committed to the reverb settings and can change them later on in the mixing process if required, whilst still getting the benefit of the vocalist hearing reverb whilst they perform. This is a safer option for beginners. In regards to recording a vocalist in stereo, this is only applicable if you have dual microphones recording them as they perform. Otherwise you are just recording a Mono signal (one microphone) on a stereo track. Recording a vocalist with two microphones on a stereo track (a true stereo recording ) will give the recording stereo width as the time difference of the soundwave hitting each microphone and the shape of the room will make the recording from each mic slightly different. For example duplicating a mono track and panning one hard left and one hard right won't be stereo, as it is the difference between the left and right side which creates stereo width. 😎👌

Your awesome Sir. And how silly of me Sir.... I really really thought copying a solo to the next track and Panning one hard-left and one hard-rte would make it stereo... how ignorant of me Sir. Still stereo, unless you're playing a recording that is mono. It won't sound as good doing that though. Stereo is created by differences in the left and right channel. So the left and right waveforms are different. If you get a mono signal, duplicate it and pan it left and right, It's still mono.

Why is mono compatibility still relevant/important when basically every means we have of listening to music these days is stereo? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

Sadly people listen on phones and Bluetooth speakers which are often mono. Also in clubs,often the play back in the bar is mono. So it might sound like a banger on the dance floor but when summed to mono it becomes a blurry mess. All those people at the bar just keep drinking and are not lured to the d floor 😂. I think your right though. It's not that important now days.

I kinda feel like mixing in mono is pointless......... 90% of playback systems in 2021 are stereo..... maybe not in clubs but at that point you can not even hear a good mix or not.

The word Monotheism does NOT always pertain to Numerology or Quantitave Measurement.Again, it can mean- like the song- 'We are Family'....the true Definition for Mono= ALONE,and this requires a Spiritual Interpretation and not a Numerical one.UNI vs STEREO is the more appropriate Bellwether,not MONO vs Stereo.❤

Thanks for the explanation - that's an interesting way to interpret the word for sure. I'll probably stick to Mono vs. Stereo though since people use these terms to quickly discern the type of signal they're working with.

Some albums prior to 1969 were made to be listened to in mono (since most radios before 1969 were mono and stereo was very expensive back then) so their respective stereo mixes suck since not much effort was put in for them. Do your research.
