The X1R. Taming cymbal harshness is worth using with a ribbon, especially since they take EQ so we'll.

I like the 301fet the best solo. Mixed they all sound good ha haaaa something about it just sounds clearer crisper to my ears. I see how this is tough to choose🥁🔥

the ribbon brought a bit more clarity and high end, while the fet lost some of the low end. the tube was woofy but not terrible. I like the ribbon. Id use the tube for a room mic, And the fet outside the kick.

So many choices will work there, it’s crazy. In the old days we had to go by certain rules set down by limitations in recoding tech. Not anymore… so pretty much any good quality mic of any type will do a nice job, given the needs at the time and so on. You can eq anything and not add so much noise anymore, so go crazy, friend. I’ll soon be setting up Drum mics once again… and it’s always fun stuff. Enjoy whatever you do! 🫵🏼🥁✨

My favorite was the Fet Condenser. To me when soloed it brought out the most snare attack and the hats were more articulate. That said, the close mics on both more than compensate when mixed in. Question - is there science/magic about the placement at 42.5" above the snare?

Fet Condenser for me, with the Tube a close second. Most articulate, a bit brighter imo. The ribbon is too dark for my taste, almost muffled. In context with the close mics it's okayish, maybe if you wanna do a Beatles style recording or something from that era. Hope that helps. Oh, and please bring back snare (kit?) of the week! :)

MA-301FET for me but you can't go with any. The snare sounds better on that one IMO
