I didn’t really understand what a placenta was until I learned more about marsupials, i.e. non-placental mammals. Since there isn’t that barrier between mom and baby, the baby needs to get out of there quick, because the mom’s immune system wants to see the baby as an intruder. Right? So when the little joey is born, it looks just like a fetus, with just a head, body, and arms. It crawls all the way into the pouch and latches onto a nipple, which expands, and the joey doesn’t let go until it’s grown up. So that’s like it’s new umbilical cord, and the pouch is the new uterus.
