That Epic Movie Music Sound: Chromatic Mediants!

Today we explore the sound of chromatic mediants: the music theory we don't know, but the sound we all know from movie music!
We study 3 types of these chords:
- Diatonic mediants
- Chromatic mediants
- Double chromatic mediants
(and each type with sub-mediants too!)
They all have their unique sound and color.
At the end, I included examples for each 8 possible tonic/mediant pairings with ambient swells so you can get an idea in the context of ambient guitar!

How cool to play only two triads and make them sound totally epic like straight out of a popular movie. I was hearing several movie sounds distinctly. Ok so do I need to alter the modes I use as well for this I could start in c ionian but instead of aeolian for the change to the 6th chord would I use like one of the melodic minor modes or something

Exactly, most of us spend a lot of time learning or even stuck playing diatonic scales and chords that we sometimes miss the point there are no rules and there are lots non-conventional but cool chord progressions.

That can apply to minor too. In both cases, you end up using chords outside your key when you use chromatic mediants!

For my ear the most beautiful, dark and epic mediant ( and you don't talk about it) is a minor chord separated by a major third with an other minor chord. It's used by John Williams in Duel of the fates ( Cm - Em ) and the feeling and darkness generated are just insane !!!
