Got one from my dad in the 70s. He was a radio operator in one. Called the serch-in-Virgin had a cowgirl on it. Anyway went in the army and never got to build it. Sure miss my dad. One day I pray. Anyway awesome video 👍 looking forward to this one. And I'm not an aircraft guy as you know. But very interested in B17s.👍God bless. oh forgot to mention Shepherd Paine made a diorama for monogram. They put the pamphlet in the box. It was of a crashed B17 it was AMAZING 👍👍👍

Yes indeed. I have the original diorama sheet from the first one I built in the '90s. Shep's work was amazing.

What a great walk down memory lane! I built this very kit in the late 70's and hung it from my bedroom ceiling, lol. Can't wait to see the build Brett, thanks! Johnny

Hi Brett. What a lovely, nostalgic trip back in time. Fabulous review, not only regarding the kit itself, but the very interesting literature too. I was a mere lad, 16 yrs. young, when this kit was released! Being in the U.K., my modelling teeth were cut on Airfix kits, so I missed out on this offering from Monogram.👍😎

This one was always my favorite but I never got around to building one until the '90s. The paper goods that came in the kits were always an atttraction for me with the Monogram kits especially the diorama tips sheets. Totally opened my eyes to the possiblities for model kits.

Does that take me back! Probably the most memorable kit from growing up. Thanks for sharing Brett.

Its funny. Monogram released some great 1/48 scale kits. Their big bombers always got me stoked: b-29; B-24; and this, the B-17. Funny thing is the B-17 was always my favorite and the one I wanted to build.

The trusty ole Monogram 1/48 B-17 kit, I've built over 15 of those thru the yrs. Many were done for 8th A.A.F. vets some even replicating the battle damage suffered on their missions. I was part of the 8th A.A.F. Historical Society joining them back in the late 80s. Met so many 8th veterans even making great friends with many of them. I met one of the crew members of "Chow Hound" once in Savannah. The kit you have there Brett is actually a 3rd run kit released just after the visible B-17 run. The 1st release was the exact same box art but with a sweepstakes ad on the top right corner of the box. 1st release kits also had no bomb rack as that wasn't added until the visible kit required it's addition. Interesting note on that kit is what Revell models did soon after it's release, they copied it. The Revell B-17F fuselage half mates up nicely to the Monogram B-17G kit as do many of the other parts. Revells kit is just as nice on the outside but slick detail on the inside with only a cockpit. section. The pamphlets Shepard Paine did for Monogram were very fascinating to me as well back when I was about 10 getting my 1st B-17 kit for 17.50 from Lakeshore Hobbies in Gainesville Ga. It was up on the top shelf sitting on it's side so all I could see was this big 4 engine mean machine. I was so excited I built it in one day haha.

Thanks for the comments, Warren. Very interesting about the release info. I thought I was mis-remembering my experience with the one I built years ago. I didn't remember having a bomb rack in the one one I build and now this explains it. Jim D at ShutterAce is building the Revell version and he has remarked about the bare interior of that kit.

Oldie but a goodie! When I did my latest one I used a lot of resin upgrades inside and scratched a more accurate tail wheel. Looking forward to see you work your magic on this! Cheers Trey
@BrettG64 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Trey and I was considering doing the same. But in the end I figured I do it from the box, except for the MGs and wheels.

@@BrettG64 a wise decision, I spent a year modding the b17 build. It was for a customer otherwise it too would have been out of box.

What you might call a holy grail kit for some builders. Have it in the stash somewhere with a lot of other 1/48 classic Monogram kits. They made great stuff in the days. I think their B-25 was just recently replaced by a newly tooled one from HKModels. So some of their models go a long way. Good luck with the build of this beauty 👍👍👍

Thanks, Dave. I agree on the old Monogram kits. Even nowadays many will say that for shape and accuracy Monogram is still tops in that respect.

I was born in '75. Great year. Your wife bought you a model!? Wow. You are one lucky dude. Not all wives are cut from the same cloth. Lol. Enjoy the build. I just finished mine last year. All I have to say is that you might want to put down some primer if you plan to use masking tape. And get ready to sand your life away. Lol.
@BrettG64 Жыл бұрын
All sound recommendations, my friend! I’ve got the sanding pretty much complete; just a few more small things to take care of. Then I’ll replace the raised panel lines and detail lost during the aforementioned sanding, then primer. Primer is pretty much SOP for me. Thankfully I have shifted completely to lacquer based primer and paint, so masking is a breeze now! Good to hear from you amigo!

So far its a good kit. I built one years ago but don't remember much about it. My one complaint is the clear parts are typical of older and some newer kits. Most don't fit quite right.
