This week in the Toy Collector's Attic we are looking over Monogram's 1/8 scale Hot Rod spin off models from the famous Big T as well as the lindberg models of T bucket hot rods These amazing models were new variations on the Big T, a T bucket drag racer, a new 6 pack hot rod and a 4 passenger phaeton.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
These large scale cars were the toy of the Christmas Season in 1962. The first of them was the Big T hot rod, a T bucket hot rod built from a 20's model t ford roadster pickup truck. Because of the success of the BIg T, 3 more hot rods were produced in the next few years. As well as an engine upgrade kit, the PE 62 as well as a Jaguar, Corvette Sting Ray and a 32 Ford roadster.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
From the web:
Monogram was founded in Chicago in 1945, making balsa wood model kits of ships and airplanes. Seaships such as the USS Missouri battleship, the USS Shangri-La carrier and the USS Hobby destroyer were among the very first products. Meanwhile, a company called Revell started making plastic kits in 1953, and Monogram responded with "All Plastic" "Plastikits" the first of which were a red plastic midget racer and a "Hot Rod" Model A - and the modeling race was on (Funding Universe webpage). These two cars, and later an Indianapolis-style racer and hydroplane racing boat, were also offered with C02 "Jet Power". Early kits advertised that the models were made from "acetate parts molded to shape". The wording showed the newness of the plastics industry and how plastics were not yet being taken for granted.
Early airplane models were mainly balsa wood, but more plastic parts were added over the next couple of years. By 1954 the airplane lineup consisted of the 'Speedee Built' series which flew under rubber band power. A few of these planes were all-plastic. Also seen were the Superkits with a prefabricated balsa fuselage, but more plastic parts.
Auto kit makers AMT and Jo-Han started early but focused on manufacturers' promotional models and did not enter the kit fray until the late 1950s. As the 1950s progressed, Monogram increasingly included more automobile models and custom wheeled creations in competition with the other makers. Through the 1970s, competition required increased production of a variety of fantastical vehicles.

I’ve always thought of the big T’s and the PE 62 as the greatest models ever. But that’s because I loved them when I was 10. And built them!!

Another fantastic video. So much fun watching and remembering the stuff you guys show. I remember as a kid watching the slot car clubs convert model cars to slot cars. It was great seeing the Batmobil and Munster's car go round the track.lol

I used a beer keg for the gas tank in my '32 Coupe... :-) The "Six-Pack" was probably an Edelbrock manifold. I had a "Manafre" 4-2 barrel setup for a while. I ran Stromberg 97s. If I parked on a hill, pointed downhill, at least one of the carbs would go incontinent and drain it's bowl into the manifold. Talk about flooded! I was lucky it didn't hydrolock. Oh, and I only did it once... :-)

tom7601. In college there was a guy who took a car chassis and used a sofa for a seat and a beer keg for a gas tank and then he just drove that chassis around. It was Chrysler as I recall. Anyway one night hecdecided to drag race the thing on the Boulevard, needless to say it wasn’t street legal, anyway when he really got on it the whole thing just fell apart right underneath him. The keg ended up over on the sidewalk spilling gasoline all over the place. I think they suspended his drivers license for something like 170 years.

This "attic Gig" is cool. Points-up those mega kits most of us of that time yearned to own and build. I've mentioned before that I was the kid with the sticky fingers. No, not stole stuff, would get glue on my fingers and, well y'all know. That ultra fine needle and glue dispensers came out way to late in the game to help me. You guys cause a sort of whiplash every week with the trip down memory lane. It is so cool you guys do this. Both of you are one of the best items on this here You Tube media. ANYBODY, and I mean anybody can kick back with you two and enjoy the ride. Rock on! (Oh did I gush?)

Jeanne M. Uzar hi there! Hope you guys are having a merry Christmas so far. I really love doing these attic shows because between Karyn and I we have collected so many fun toys. We will soon be moving on to her collection of kiddle dolls. By Mattel. I’m willing to bet she has one of the worlds best collections of these little dolls from the 1960s. And I want to do a whole lot of show on brass engines and as my friend Ralph owns the very first Japanese brass engine ever produced in the early 1950s it would be appropriate to start the brass engines with the very first brass engine ever made.

Am I dreaming or was there a model called the "Orange Crate" model kit (1/25th scale) available (I think that I had it) in 1968.? Also, there was a contest advertised on the model box at the time to win the actual Orange Crate full size car. Am I imagining this.?

I had a 1/8 scale Mustang--it was either the fastback or convertible, can't remember--that was dark green with cream coloured interior. I forget who made it. I think it was Monogram that made the Visible V8 and Visible Chassis. I had both of those. That was many years ago, when I was almost a teenager, or just as I became one.

P.S. In later years, I left the cars alone and got into 1/25 scale trucks and construction equipment kits by AMT and MPC mostly.

Hi. Sure. The current remake is really close. The 3 in one kit. And originals are everywhere. But if you are just interested in some information on what’s missing or where some part goes I’ll bet there are instructions from the original kit on eBay. Just looked. Yup. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F184097912775

They re realeased the big T again as a three in one. It’s the t tub with all the parts for the big t, big rod and almost the big drag. Missing the roll bar and straight pipes. But there was a monogram parts pack back it the 60s with those parts! So you could get the 3 in one big t and look for the parts pack on eBay. Or look for a big drag on eBay. They come up all the time. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F233267624781
