Features
A very demanding construction kit for the experienced modeler
Multi-piece V8 engine
Movable hood
Multi-piece chassis
Various chrome parts, including rims, exhaust pipe and carburetor
Decal for three famous versions
The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile that was built and produced by Pontiac from the 1967 to 2002 model years.[1] Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after GM's Chevrolet division's platform-sharing Camaro.[2] This also coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, Ford's upscale, platform-sharing version of the Mustang.
The name "Firebird" was also previously used by GM for the General Motors Firebird in the 1950s and early 1960s concept cars.
The body was completely restyled for 1979, featuring a new aerodynamic front end, revised rear end spoiler, bulkier flares for the Trans Am, and a revised connected single taillight assembly design that would remain consistent for the rest of the Firebirds design. The grilles had been repositioned to the lower section of the front bumper to allow more cold air to directly travel to the lower part of the radiator and engine bay. The interior remained mostly unchanged to the previous model year, however the deluxe cloth interior had now changed from velour to a Hobnail pattern. The hood decal from the Y88 SE and Solar Gold cars from 1978 became the standard design across the entire Trans Am line and now came in a variety of colours. The Formula steering wheel that was optional in the lower models and standard in the Trans Am now came colour coded to the interior.
For 1979, there were three possible engine options. The L80 Oldsmobile 403 engine became the standard option and was only available with the Turbo Hydramatic 350 3-speed automatic. The W72 Pontiac 400 was available for a short period and in limited supply. This was the last of the line for the Pontiac large displacement V8 engines, and only available with the Borg-Warner Super T-10, while also requiring the WS6 handling package as mandatory equipment in conjunction with this driveline choice. A credit option with a four-speed transmission was the smaller displacement L37 Pontiac 301 and it could come with either the Super T-10 or Turbo Hydramatic 350.
The Formula received some revisions for the 1979, where the two-tone W50 colored stripe decal now became the standard look for the Formula, however, the W50 package was still available and it added the "Formula" lettering along the bottom of the doors and rear deck spoiler. The dashboard bezel now wore the same machined swirl aluminum bezel as the Trans Am. As the Pontiac 301 had now ramped up production as the Pontiac 400 production had ceased, it became the standard engine for the Formula. The WS6 package had now been renamed from the "Trans Am Mk IV Special Handling Package" to "Special Handling Package" as it was now available for the Firebird Formula. Due to significant popularity and demand for the option to receive 4 wheel disc brakes in the WS6 handling package, some WS6 equipped cars were shipped without the option of rear disc brakes and were instead coded WS7, but still received all other equipment included in the WS6 package.[47]
A limited-edition anniversary package to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 1969 Firebird Trans Am. The colloquially known as the "TATA" (Tenth Anniversary Trans Am, RPO Y89), it featured every single available production option on the Firebird, however, cruise control was not compatible with the manual transmission resulting in the being credited on the window sticker for the 4-speed equipped TATAs. The TATA also featured special 10th-anniversary decals, including a Firebird hood decal that extended off of the hood and onto the front fenders. Pontiac produced 7,500 Y89 TATAs, of which 1,817 were equipped with the high-output Pontiac T/A 6.6 W72 400 engine. The remainder all featured the Oldsmobile 403. Two TATAs were the actual pace cars for the 1979 Daytona 500, which has been called the race that made NASCAR.

I have this kit (didn’t realise it was that old 🤯) and when I build it, I’m not going to be able to do much of a job on the dashboard because my hand will be shaking because I will be continuously giggling over the phrase “clam chillers”. And also the way it was delivered “...and one for the ladies... ... ... clam chillers?” 🤣🤣. And it’s not inappropriate - it’s your internet, you can say what you want.

I use to build so slow making sure everything is perfect but it's okay to use hardware paint and just build it! Thank you for your efforts! Hope the crybabies don't stop you from doing the great videos!

Love your builds as always!! I built the original Monogram Turbo Version in the 80's as well as the, Z28, Corvette Stingray and Ford T. The bodies were pre-painted in very high quality finishes and were made with much thicker plastic. Zero warpage and perfect fit for the bonnets. Revell has gotten lazy and are skimping on the plastic.

Oh, the temptation to nit-pick! I shall resist. I owned or screwed with a bundle of F Bodies in my far-gone youth. What a trip down memory lane. I remember the feel of those three spoke wheels in my hands. You know, the fit and finish of the panels on this kit is pretty much accurate. Gaposis and misalignment was the order of the day. so, the thin hood, no big deal. OK.I'll go there just a bit. The swoosh in the screaming chicken's mouth indicates turbo. I missed the intake but I think That's one of the normally aspirated big blocks. THe Pontiac Blue is spot-on. Pretty sure that is an accurate TH-400 as well. This is an absolute wonder of a kit. GO get one!

An old Monogram model if I remember correctly? I've got their '82 Camaro IROC-Z from the same series, bought when new and still one of my most favored models. Constructionwise, these two models follow the exact same formula, with the interior tub, front and rear clips, suspension and the hood hinges allowing you to display the model with the hood open. My model has been through a LOT and was quite badly damaged for several years after living on top of a wardrobe closet... but it survived and has been repaired!

I've been lusting after the 1/8 Trans-Am and IROC-Z since I first saw them in the 1991 Monogram catalog!!! Nice build as always, though the warpage kinda sucks for how much these are selling for... :(

I would like this kit, but the Mrs may go nuts if I buy another 😑. I built the 1/8 Stingray Corvette, it looks great, but a kit this size you would expect opening doors. If I buy this kit I would open up the trunk and doors, although looking at the body on this video the roof pillars will come away from the body if you cut out the doors, will need to add support from roof pillar to firewall before chopping out the doors. Will look great with LED lights too. Great video, very informative and helpful.

This is so amazing! I built the turbo version of this kit as a kid (was way over my head at the time but still loved it), and have been searching ebay for years hoping to find a decent NOS kit and searching KZbin for a good build vid of a 1/8 T/A kit (mostly for nostalgia because I was losing hope of ever getting another one) and now you go and allow me to check multiple boxes on my wish list. I’m still not that skilled at modelling but would still love to try one of these kits again as an adult.

For adequate building and display space I've arranged to rent my neighbor's garage - he no longer has a car. I've ordered a drum of Plastruct glue and several cases of my favorite spray paints are about to be delivered. PLUS, I've order the very realistic kit (I did have to wait for the manager's approval on my cash offer). All this is to say BIG. This kit is HUGE. And what a build. Beautiful and a very detailed and accurate (to a point) model kit. Unfortunately, a glaring error is that the hood shaker decal is wrong on this model. It should say “6.6 Liter” because it is an automatic car which used the 403 CI Oldsmobile engine, not “T/A 6.6” which was reserved for the 4-speed cars which had the Pontiac 400 CI engine. I’m surprised that the Revel QC people didn’t catch that. I didn’t look up how much it costs but imagine if it was metal and not plastic? I was a big model builder as a kid. Anybody remember “The Visible V8”? It was about $25 back in 1965 when I built it.

Gteat review and assembly of an impressive kit sir. However, I will have to pass on it. The bird decal is the wrong combination of colors. Not gold enough. ROUND 2 got it right in the MPC 1/16 scale kit I'm building.. In addition to the gold bird, they include the blue and red birds too😃 If one is so inclined, one could print a corrected bird at home though😉 Again, awesome review and build. Great build, you have made me feel younger. I had one 8n Nocturnal Blue and sandstone interior. I think you did a great job with the warped parts. Overall - fantastic! The only oddity I saw was that it appeared that the front tires extended out past the front fender flares. That seemed odd to me and not properly proportioned to the build, meaning that the scale of the molded parts seemed a touch off to push them out that. Again, excellent job.

That's because he didn't assemble them correctly. The inner half of the wheel goes on the spindle and then the small round keeper goes on the spindle to hold it in place. He jumped the gun. Also he doesn't talk about the issue with the Tires that come with the kit. The factory pre cut side of the Tire is too large and the the wheel sections fall through. Revell has been informed

They should have given you the option of the 77’ as well as the 80’ Turbo as all they would need to change is the hood, engine, front clip, and tail lights with decals so you would be able to build the Smokey and the Bandit 1 or 2 versions whichever you prefer. This kit is more reminiscent of the car that was in Rocky 2 & Blue Thunder.

I respect your style of building.......if so inclined- you could super-detail the heck out of this kit. Thanks for posting this build, probably gonna get one and build it to replicate one of my high school buddies T/A's.

He does them as a review of the kit. If he was to do a show quality detail he would win awards!

Spent 2 weeks with body and custom paint, then dropped the stinking thing! 😢 20 years ago! Don’t think I would want to go through that again! It would have been a Teal color from house of color, with the screaming chicken buried under multiple layers of clear ! It was very hard to work on just because of the size ! Beautiful kit though! I am assuming this is a re- issue! Nice job man! 🤔😝🫡🇺🇸

By the way, this was a commission build ! Had to scrap the 1/8 scale, I built a 1/25 mpc for the fellow! He was a happy camper! Ended up not charging him ! 🤔🫡🇺🇸

Very nice gigantic build! Mine arrived yesterday. Will probably spray it gold and not use the pinstripes. Is it possible your T-tops can be switched from side to side and that may solve the rise they have in the back? The kit instructions are a little off about the taillights. On '79-80 Firebirds, they're smoke black all the way across. The red with white reverse lights is how they were in '77 and '78, but one certainly can paint this kit that way if they choose. Good luck finding a place to display this beast. I'm glad it's available again.

I would love to see the Z28 version but an ‘81 model. I did the newer IROC 1/8 kit and yes, it was huge! I wonder if someone makes pace car dekkals for this kit? That would be awesome!

Nice job Chris however not on you but whoever printed the decals got the colors wrong for the bird. Oh just a FYI the “King Pins” are called spindles. Ford pickups use the king pins.
