I built this many times as a kid and once recently. Typical of a mid fifties kit. Lotsa fun but my decals also disintegrated.

I have the yellow navy re-issue as well. I will definitely be using a decal coat on those

Awesome build using period tools and glue to build your T-28! Brush on a continuous coat of Microscale Liquid Decal Film onto your decals.

@@JMdfcv Thanks! It’s pretty fun using the old tools and glue. I didn’t think the decals were old enough to have a problem but I guess they are 25 years old!

I remember building the Monogram T-28D Fighter -Bomber version of this kit…the old Monogram Blue box series…bought this kit and the Monogram Bf-109 (for 88 cents each!) in 1970….

@@hertzair1186 I think kit shows signs of the D conversion. Holes in the wings for ordinance and the removal of the tailhook/kickstand.

I've always like the North American T28, there's at least one here in Australia that's still flying and I've seen it at airshows. I remember these older Monogram kits from building a few and I always thought they were great particularly with things like retractable landing gear and sliding canopies. The plastic seem to be really hard and brittle compared to what we're used to these days. Nice build of this classic A/C. I've seen others deal with the issue of the gap at the wing root by stretching some sprue and using that, at least it would be the same colour.

Thats a great idea for the gap filling. I wanted to leave it in the raw silver plastic so that would solve the problem. I will give it a try when I get replacement decals.

One of my favorite kits as a kid. I believe there was another version with navy decals. I remember gluing nuts in the nose to weigh it down so it could sit right with the gear down.

@@Eddie-di6eb6cv8v I have the nostalgia issue of the yellow navy one as well. I was going to build it right after this one but I think I will wait a bit after the troubles with this one. The main gear is pretty far forward on this bird making it especially ass-heavy!

Boy this is bringing back the memories and the F3F Grumman with the working retracts (by turning the prop!) popping into my head! Love just using the “kid” toolbox for the build! 😂

For a mid 50's tooling, that is hardly terrible. Far more detail in some areas than I was expecting to see. Whether it's accurate is another question though. :)
@CelebratingVintageModelKits21 күн бұрын
Monogram did a pretty good job with this one. I think there are some accuracy issues since they made some parts functional and the mold has been reworked a few times for different versions.
@potrzebieneuman4702Ай бұрын
From memory I believe the T28 had a two piece sliding canopy, I could be wrong. When I was a kid I used a method( that didn't always work), for closing the gaps on these kits and that was to put a little more glue on the parts and leave it for a few second and then squeeze the parts together. This sometimes resulted in a ridge of glue/plastic to ooze out of the gap. Once dry it could be trimmed off leaving a reasonable sort of join. Mind you it was easy to use too much glue and end up with a car crash.
@CelebratingVintageModelKits21 күн бұрын
I thought of doing that on this one as I remember doing it years ago. The problem here was the gap was so big it was affecting the dihedral when I pushed it closed. The rear canopy does open on this kit.

Nice work. I have the same issue. Been sanding the filler on the wing & the closed gear doors. Added a slot for using one of Atlantis reissues of the Revell swivel stand. Will be an in-flight model. Per your experience I'll use some Microscale decal film.
@CelebratingVintageModelKitsАй бұрын
@@stuarthanna2417 Those wing to fuselage gaps are pretty big. If i was building this as a modern build I would probably have put some plasticard in the gap before filling. If you have the re-release as this one, I would definitely use decal film on the decals before using them.

I forgot how stringy the stuff can get. Used a toothpick to do most of the application. It was a fun build until the nose weight and decal problem!
