Thoughts: Surprise! I made another video before the F1-8X V2 to show off a new plate material that was not on my bingo card for this year. Thank you, Tom, from HypeKeyboards, for entrusting me to be one of the first to try out this plate material. In addition, please check out his little keyboard charms at the end! They are so sick and charming. It's also amusing that the 200th Monokei Hiro sound test is a new plate. I would not have it any other way, haha.
As for the sound of ultem, I have two words to describe it: full and clacky. It has that bright tone associated with aluminum without the metallic resonance, and it has the pop of other plastic plates like Nylon or PP. In person, the volume is actually quite loud. It was consistently as loud as a snap, and the spacebar was even louder than that. It reminds me a lot of nylon, but the stiffness confers it with probably the "highest" pitch from the plastic plates.
I can also discuss the "feel" with this. Tom was right to say that Ultem was the stiffest plastic, but in my experience, it's not as stiff as carbon fiber or aluminum. This is especially evident in a gasket mount. When I push down, the specific portion I'm applying pressure to goes down. The entire plate wants to go down for carbon fiber or aluminum no matter where I exert pressure.
Would I keep it in my Hiro? Yes. It's unique in its own way and hangs with my favorite plate materials (PP, nylon, and aluminum). The most similar plate I could probably compare this to is carbon fiber. It's not as dry sounding because of the plastic nature, but I find that I prefer it sounding fuller when listening back. I will not take this plate out unless I'm forced to. I love it a lot! I would say be careful using this with long poles, though. I feel that would be too high-pitched. This plate with standard pole switches will absolutely bang. Someone, please try this plate with Gateron Milky Yellows!
