I believe he does it for sonic reasons. it's not necessarily supposed to ride the groove when he does one of those "out of place" sounding fills. I've come to appreciate it over the years.

I get that the fills don't always have to be exactly what you expect. In fact I appreciate that, but I still think it sounds a bit empty in some spots. If it weren't a live cover/rendition I would like to hear it filled in a bit more.
