Monopoly

(TV Debut: June 16, 1990)
The popular board game MONOPOLY became a television game show in the summer of 1990 when ABC gave it a brief run on Saturday nights. Three studio contestants answered questions as they acquired properties going around the game board. After the properties were distributed, the players then spent the remainder of the game moving around the game board that covered the studio floor. The day's winner rolled a pair of dice trying to go around the board in five rolls, collecting $100 for each square they passed and $25,000 if they made it all the way around the board. Longtime Merv Griffin music director Mort Lindsey composed the catchy theme song.

Merv Griffin A glitzy, high-tech version of the famous real estate board game. Three contestants competed on a large illuminated board containing 22 property squares and 18 other spaces, via questions and rolls of the dice. The goal was to amass property, build monopolies, and stay out of jail. Prizes went as high as $50,000. The program was originally offered in syndication to local stations, but not finding enough takers wound up---briefly---on ABC instead.

Coincidentally, host Mike Reilly competed on the television game show Jeopardy! in 1989. Reilly later worked as a waiter before being selected a year later by producer Merv Griffin to perform as a contestant on the pilot for Monopoly. After the pilot with Peter Tomarken as host was taped, Reilly was selected as host. The pilot was produced for syndication, but could not gain clearances. Tomarken clashed with producers over production elements.
