After years of using just an AVR I’ve decided to venture out to the Amp world. So I’ve done a lot of research and listened to a lot of talking heads here on KZbin and elsewhere. My head was quite literally spinning. You, my friend, have given the most comprehensive yet simplest explanation of all. Congrats on a great review/video. I now know which way to fly. Thank you!

These Monolith Amplifiers are made by ATI /Amplifier Technologies Inc. I have 2 ATI AT2505 amps. They weigh in at 105lbs each. Rated at 250 watts into 8 ohms and 375 watts into 4 ohms all channels driven. These are 20 years old and still working great. About a year ago I replace all the 12,000uf 80volt power capacitors as there was one leaking and some of them were beginning to bulge. Cost me under $200 for the replacement Capacitors. Should be good for another 20 years. ATI makes amplifiers for several companies. I have tested these specs using Dummy Load Resistors and measuring using Multi Tester and O-scope and can confirm they easily exceed the the ratings.

Monolith isn’t playing here, they are continuing to come out with new products. I see two channel and turntables next, wow. I’m glad that you pointed it out that the power was cleaner and clearer. There is no AV receiver that will ever compete with a stand alone amp for power especially across multiple channels. There are too many compromises made in a receiver, while an single amp only has one job to do amplify a signal and do it well.

Great video. You speak well and have a pleasant voice & delivery. You get into the basics of some concepts without overwhelming the easily overwhelmed (not a problem I suffer from). I have a high-end Yamaha integrated receiver + amplifier, and despite how well reviewed the Yamaha is, in reality it's integrated amplifier is really bad. It can't handle 4 ohm loads (oops, all my speakers are 4 ohms) and when pushed it shuts down due to thermal problems (probably the 4 ohm load issue. Yamaha only supports down to 6 ohms). I also have a mid-level Denon & a high-end (for them) Kenwood. I think the Yamaha sounds better than the Denon, but that Denon is a more well-rounded & better thought out receiver. The Yamaha, despite how good it sounds (when it's not shutting down due to overload), it's feature set, ergonomics, and user interface are an insult to humanity. The specifications of these Monolith amplifiers are astounding, and the price is unmatched by anyone. PLUS THEY'RE MADE IN AMERICA in Montebello People should be aware that because these amplifiers actually put out so much power, they also consume a lot of power. That's how I look at amplifier specifications: I don't care what the liars in marketing say the amp will do, tell me how much power the amp draws & I'll tell you (roughly) how much it'll really put out. If it's a 5-channel AB amp rated for 145 watts a channel, and the label by the AC jack says the amp is rated to draw 500 watts, the amp is NOT going to push 145 watts simultaneously into all channels. It defies the electronics. The amp will struggle putting out 145 watts into just two channels at once. Check the power draw these Monolith amps are rated for. It's A LOT.

You might want to take a nice AV Receiver and a $500 box system that claims "1,000 WATTS OF POWER" and run people through all the specs to show the box system is roughly 40 wpc if the same criteria was used for both. Most people do not know how to read the amplifier specs.

Unfortunately the Emotiva was a review unit and I had to send it back. So I can’t do a back to back comparison. Here are my thoughts based on my experience with each: At reasonable listening levels the both are very similar but as you push towards reference level and have scenes with lots of dynamic range the monolith will pull away because it has more output. Hope this helps!

I have a question on the 5 or 7 channel amp. All my surround in-wall speakers are 4 ohm speakers. Speaker manufacturer’s recommended amplifier power is rated as 20-200 watts per channel. In the amp specs, I see “FTC Full bandwidth output power at 4 ohms” is 300 watts. Does that mean the amp sends 300 watts RMS to the speakers? Can I power my surround speakers with these amps?

Or is it actually 100v ~ 240v Take it all? Or is there a switch in the machine that can change the input voltage? Because I want to be able to take it to other 220v areas to continue using it. Hello, where would the front Height Atmos speaker connections plug into?
@HomeTheaterHobbyist
@HomeTheaterHobbyist 2 жыл бұрын
You can plug the Atmos speakers into any connection just make sure you connect both the speaker wire (going to the Atmos speaker) and the signal wire (RCA or XLR) from your processor/AVR to the same channel on the amp. For example................ On the amp if you choose to use the connections labeled "Surround Right Rear" for the Front Left Height you need to connect the speaker connection (from Front Left Height) to the speaker terminal on the amps "Surround Right Rear" and the signal wire connection from the processor (Front Left Height) to the RCA/XLR connection on the "Surround Right Rear" channel on the amplifier. Hopefully this makes sense it's a little difficult to explain via text.

You can't do that with the amplifier. All you can do is adjust the volume on the source.

@@gregoryotoole41 Monoprice website never had the 5 channel amp for $1778.18 i have seen these amps going through the roof on ebay once they sell out on monoprices website. HOWEVER, monoprice has raised the prices yet again on the multi channel amps. as of August 2021 the 5 channel has gone up to $1599. it seems like every time they sell out these amps at record speed they scratch there heads and raise the price another $100. to be fair to Monoprice they started out too low in the beginning. Once the word got out that these were made by folks at ATI and then Gene at Audioholics gave these amps great reviews the prices started going up. I was finally able to get a 5 channel amp a few days ago after trying for about a year to get one. I started out wanting the 7 channel amp but as the prices went higher and higher i could no longer afford the 7 channel and had to settle on the 5 channel.

I can find a amp or 2.1 receiver that does 200 watts per channel at 8ohms that does not require me to sell my kidneys. Any recommendations for a $500 amp or a sub $700 receiver?

That's a great question, if you're looking for a good 2 channel amp try this one from Emotiva : bit.ly/2LdF88y, it's under $500. The 5 channel version is just over $500: bit.ly/2UTO7wH. I reviewed the 5 channel version here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imbNenWNpNxmd5o. Let me know what you decided
