Great review Jimmy. I really like the tones you were getting on the Jazzmaster & especially the 338. I have the Katana MKII 50. I like it because of the built in effects. But like you said it doesn't come close to the sound of a tube amp. I was looking at this amp about a year ago, but went with the Katana instead. When you said that you paid under $100 for this gem (after I watched your entire video of course) I immediately bought one. Thank you for the heads up on the 20% off! The great thing is if I want to upgrade to the 15w my Cousin said that he would buy the 5w from me for what I paid for it. So I'll probably play with it for a month or so then upgrade. Win/win for both of us. I'm looking forward to your video trying them on different cabs.

I bought one, I guess close to 4 years ago, when they first came out. I was blown away by how it sounds and yes, it is plenty loud. I run mine between 5 and 6 on the volume, on the 5 watt setting, and it just growls like crazy. I love it and play through it almost every day!👍😎🎸🎶

@@JimmyStewart1 I am just 375 lbs, and it kinda just popped. I'm having some swelling and I have an ulcer that doesn't want to heal. On a pain level of 1-10 I'd say it's about an 11. I'm taking antibiotics but if you ask for pain medication they treat you like a junkie. It's not all the time though, but several hours a day. This too will pass, but if I was a horse I'd shoot me. Lol 😆

I bought the 5w first. I liked it a lot, but then the 15w became available on sale for 200 bucks. It has foot switchable reverb, a Celestion, and an effects loop, well worth the extra $$$. For $100 the 5w is a great first tube amp.

I almost bought the 5W, but grabbed the 15W on sale...and I love it (my 1st tube amp). I've also picked up 2 of their 40W combos and 2 of the 10W little practice amps. I use the little 10W with a Mitchell A/E and it sounds fine for what it is...and, of course. the price is always nice. They are running a 20% off sale on amps right now, but I have more amps than guitars right now too.

Amp shopping! Wife works at home (permanent) so i'm limited on vol. do you think on 1w. I could get this to breakup a little (at least the edge)? Wild theory. Thanks for watching and commenting B.J.! Are you looking for strictly a “practice” amp for home use with headphones? If so, there are probably better options without having to rig it up to another source to provide a headphone out for you (though it can be done). As far as breakup, yes, this little beast will certainly do that but again if volume is a issue then even on 1w, this may be a bit loud! Depending on your situation, you may want to look at something like the Spark amp. It’s not a valve amp, but it sounds pretty good for what it is, can be used as a Bluetooth speaker as well, has lots of effects and headphones out. I have a number of videos on the Spark, and a amp video comparing the Spark, the Monoprice 15w, and the Boss Katana (another popular choice) here on the channel. For the $$, the Monoprice 5W is tough to beat, but it may not be the best solution for you, again depending on your needs and requirements. If your older SS has a cab in and the headphone Jack cuts out the cab when plugged in you should be good. You could always just “crank it up” to taste on the Monoprice and throw a blanket over it….😎

I have a Kustom 1x8 solid state amp equipped with Celestion Super 8, and IDK how sophisticated my ears are, but I could swear it sounds every bit as good and has that same basic "British" characteristic as any Vintage 30 or Greenback etc, when mic'd and used to lay trax. When used as a speaker cab via my Koch attenuator which has ins and outs which enable you to finagle using my full wattage tube heads (Bugera 1960, Marshall Origin 50), it comes across as great as you could want. I think micing a good 8" speaker closely gives something of the "illusion" that you're hearing a full 4x12 on the track. So my opinion of the Super 8 is pretty high.

Hey Jimmy, sounds really great! I I noticed you were using some delay and reverb. When the gain is up and the amp starts to breakup a little, does the reverb and delay hold together or do they start to wash out?

Hi GRMElectric…thanks for watching and commenting. As you may be aware, this 5w has no “onboard” reverb or effects send/return circuit so any effects used outboard run to the front of the amp. Honestly, even with it cranked up I have not noticed a lot of “wash out” and depending on your outboard effects unit, everything seems to hold together pretty well. I can’t hardly live without delay lol but some amps I had in the past just sounded terrible if delay wasn’t put into an effects loop. But I have other amps that are fine running them into the front. This amp takes pedals like a champ (as you can see here) and I think would make a great lil’ jam amp in the type of situation you are describing. Drop it down to the 1W setting and you can drive it for days. The “bigger” brother to this, the 15W Stage Right has a two spring reverb and a effects loop and is another great amp! Full review of that is also on the channel!

It sounds so good, I can’t believe the quality for the price, I have pedals that I paid twice the price for 😬It sounds a lot like my fender hot rod deluxe. If you do any camping or just hanging out away from electric you might want to demo the Monoprice 10 watt battery powered guitar amp. It's fun playing along with acoustics too. I'd never own a normal 10 or 15 watt solid state practice amp, but for the buck this thing doesn't suck. I bought the SR 15 watt amp back when they were $179.

Big Box for such a little amp. They come very well padded. Mine was more expensive. It was down for Open Box, but then I had to pay for shipping. It came out to barely less than full charge with free shipping. I think that I tried the SPARK into the 5W, or maybe the other way around. Meanwhile my SPARK just sits under some old magazines/newspapers/mail. (That things hums and/or cuts out to keep it from humming... it's pretty bad.) The 5W, however, is really pleasant. Actually I find the amp pretty quiet…depending on the guitar you are using. With single coils you will get a bit more noise of course. Also I was using my effects rack via front input (which this amp handles well) so that will also increase noise, again depending on your effects rack, types of pedals, ect…

I still prefer a good small valve amp, and then my choice of my own pedals to grab the tones I am looking for.

Hi Fernando…thanks for watching and commenting. This review is of the 5W StageRight. I also have the 15w “big brother” as well. If you can swing it, I would go with the 15w version as it offers both on board reverb along with an effects send/ return that is not on the 5W. This is available right now for about $98 (before state tax) after a sale and discount. Does this have any clean headroom for a guy playing at low volume in an apartment? I bought one several years ago before the price hikes but it arrived dead ... a loose tube probably ... so I sent it back. And I've sort of regretted it ever since.

Good price thanks to Monoprice running its Black Friday sale. I think you would be fine at a low volume (clean) for apartment playing. You could set the attenuation to the 1W setting and keep it clean and low. It is a little beast as well, and can get LOUD when you need it to! 🎸👍

i like that " OriPure 5W All Tube Guitar Amplifier Head " .... it's Full tube, ( no silicon rectifiers ) ... get that 6Z4 sag compressing the transients, i bet that sounds boutique. run that into a Weber Alnico Blue Dog 12" , 8 ohm 15 watt, paper cone, no dope ... that would rock. but for that price, i would just get my foot in the door on a Weber 5F2H Amp Kit, ( no speaker, no tubes, no copper cap ), and start building up a GZ34 15 watt, loud enough to pay out; add a full set of tubes, and a 12" Alnico Gray Wolf latter.

Wish the Joyo Sweet Baby 5w wasnt 2.5X the $s, tube rectified y'know. Its great this SR is less than a brand new JHS pedal; the Jensen C8R sounds way better w/volume dimed than the Celestion. Want to try the Jensen 8/20 MOD. And a hard pine cabinet and baffle, the MDF is a bit fluffy...

I just got this today and I get a bad buzz on my Eastman semi-hollow single humbucking pick up guitar. Tone is good but the buss/hiss ruins it. When I plug in my Godin Multiac there is no buzz but its a nylon string guitar so it doesn't sound so great.

Hi John…thanks for watching and commenting. Is this your only valve amp? Does your Eastman “buzz” on other amps? Good guitar cord? Any amp will give you a little noise of course (especially with single coils) but if this is excessive then start with these items in troubleshooting. Could be where it’s plugged in as well. Try a different outlet and a power strip if you have one. Be sure both your preamp 12AX7 and power 6V6 tubes are properly seated. Could have vibrated loose in transit. Does the buzz go away when holding or touching the guitar strings or bridge? Does the buzz go in or out depending on where your standing or facing? Just trying to determine if 60 cycle or grounding issues, or inherent home/circuit issues.

I have a Henriksen Bud 6 (they run about $1300) which is a solid state amp and there is no buzz but interestingly enough this 150 dollar amp has a particular tone characteristic to it that I prefer to my solid state Bud 6. I have plugged it in several different places and it's the same. Both of the tubes are properly seated and the buzz exists whether I touch the strings or not. It does not go in and out it is just constant. I have a friend coming over tomorrow with a blackstar tube amp in a couple guitars and we are going to see whether there is a buzz with his guitars and I'm going to see whether I get a buzz when I plug my guitar into his Blackstar

@@JimmyStewart1It appears this issue may be related to the tone knob. When I plug the guitar in and turn the tone knob to zero the buzzing pretty much disappears even at the five watt setting. I have now tried this with my friends Stratocaster that has a humbucking pickup in the bridge position and I get the buzz on all three pickups. When I pull the cord out of the amp it goes completely silent so there is no buzzing issue until a guitar is actually plugged in. Interestingly enough I have a Godin Mulitac Nylon Deluxe Which has two separate pickups and I get no buzz with that guitar. I'm thinking maybe I should send this back and have them send me a replacement to see what happens but what I'm hearing is unacceptable not because of the tone from the amp but because of the buzzing

@@johnpower2018 Interesting…sorry to hear though. I know you probably have already, but did you try a different guitar cable as well? Yeah, if it’s the tone circuit of the amp, by all means send it back and get another. Did you order it from Monoprice direct? If so, just give them a call and they will process the return for you. They usually wait until they receive the amp first before sending you the replacement, but they will take care of you.

Take the 100uf/450v cap off the mainboard and solder in a 22uf/450v. Replace the stock Super 8 with a Celestion 8 15. I am using a 6n2p-ev (w/ 6n2 to 12ax7 adaptor) and a GE NOS 6v6. This amp sounds mucho better than stock. :-)

No effects loop either, same as the Fender Blues JR….too bad. I think the Monoprice 15W is hands down a better value. I also have my “gigging” amp, which is a Laney VC30 Class A 2x12 combo….

I also worked with The Butterfield Blues Band and The Band many shows as a roadie and aid! This is me with Garth Hudson I'm using to Fender Champs stereo one a Vibro champ one a 69 the other a 1970.. Anyone thinking of buying a new Monoprice don't expect to get JJ tubes it because it's not a guarantee you will get them. I got a new one recently direct from Monoprice and it had tubes actually with NO name on them. I was thinking well maybe they just used JJ's unbranded but they are visually not the same as JJ's. I have seen it said that Monoprice must have finally listen to us and put the JJ's in. They have not a clue we even talk about it because I asked. I think it's fair that people should know there is a good chance you will not get JJ's with your new Monoprice any longer.

@@JimmyStewart1 I do solo/karaoke gigs for a living… 5 to 7 shows a week at restaurants mostly… My main amp is my Spark set on a Clean Matchless setting with my Squire Thinline 72’ Custom telecaster… I picked up this MonoPrice & a Vox Pathfinder 10 for cheap at a local pawn shop… The Spark still has the best tone and seems to be the loudest out of the the three… But I’m doing mods to the other two that should help get them close to what I’m use too… Enjoy your videos thanks for sharing!

@@timsealey6540 Funny…I did that for a number of years myself…👍 I also have the Spark, but honestly don’t use it much. Personally not very thrilled about the tone…to hi-fi sounding with too much bottom end even with tweaking which I get tired of doing. Would never be able to use it “live” without a foot controller which they have finally come out with. I bought the Spark on “presale” before it was released and waited over six months to finally get it. I use it in the studio as a glorified and expensive “blue tooth speaker”…😎 I also have the 1st version of the Roland Boss Katana 50w amp…same type of situation. Too much dial tweaking to get a decent tone for me…I do use it for “clean” on my acoustic/electrics from time to time. I much prefer my valve amps…between my two Monoprice amps and my Laney VC30 2x12 combo, I am pretty well covered!
