Monsanto is part of the 12 Historic Villages of Portugal. Going up Monsanto is to be in the “most Portuguese village in Portugal”. From the top of its castle, the horizon is flat, its hilltop reaches 758m and the houses blend in with boulders. It is in this “Monte Santo” where Fernando Namora once lived, among other illustrious ones, that we still find traces of an Arab and Visigothic presence.
Monsanto is also known for its adufes and marafonas. Here, the Misericórdia and São Salvador Churches, as well as the Clock Tower are mandatory stops to visit.
