First time I ever caught a bowfin was when I was stationed at Warner Robins Air Force Base fishing in Horse Creek. Didn't know what hell it was at first, but it was pretty big. Was very surprised the fight that fish put up too. Also saw my first alligator there (Oklahoma native here and we don't have alligators mind you). Now I'm stationed in Arkansas and found another large creek that has them. Despite what my professional angler friends say, bowfins are still my favorite fish to catch.

Nice job! Grinnel, my favorite fish to catch. We call them "Steelmouth Bass"; destroyer of lures and fingers. My largest is 10 and change; but, have hooked couple that would push 15. Had one at the boat 14 or 15, while fishing buddy was getting the net it took off and broke the hook on a Lunker Lure!!! Broke the hook at the bend; that lure is a trophy on my desk. Bowfin Rule!!!!

Monster bowfin!! That was a nice catch!! I guess gar react different depending where you at, what we do here in South Texas is cast out spinner baits and all the tapping of the lure on the water brings them in and thats when we throw our bait out! Another thing is we always see them active at night, i dont think I've seen a video of you gar fishing at night, would be cool to see you try gar fishing at night in that spot!!

Started bowfin fishing this year in some small creeks by my work we typically use bluegill but we have used nightcrawlers old deer meat common carp and Asian carp. The biggest I've caught is 8lbs I hooked one 12-15 on chunk of Asian carp and lost it sadly. We also catch them on ned rigs pretty often too.

I was trying to fish for bluegill, I was using a 1/32 ounce beetlepspin, but all of a sudden at bank I caught a 6 pound bowfin! I didn't even know the lake I was fishing in had bowfin. What's crazy is that the lake was a private lake that wasn't stocked with bowfin! It's about a mile away from a natural creek that does have bowfin though so I guess that's how they got in the lake. I was so happy, that's the largest fish I've ever caught before. I'm going for more of them next week in my kayak
